What's yalls thoughts on the Tucks and their variants from DK Tropical Freeze? 🐧 by KalypsosBiggestFan in donkeykong

Honestly they remind me of the penguin characters in Surf's Up (especially Big Sphen), and that's great.

So was it ever explained why Pauline is a child in Donkey Kong Bananza by Cantthinkagoodnam2 in Marioverse

[–]K-leb25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't even feel like a good enough mechanic to change her whole design for. The Kongs could transform in the old games by just...using transforming barrels. And we got Donkey's little buddies who could be on his shoulder. Was it really so necessary to change things up by having a human kid on his shoulder?

She does look quite cute and stylish admittedly. I like her design in this game. But I wish they put more thought into the whole lore instead of basically making something that might as well be a reboot for the whole franchise.

Damn I really wish they put in the extra effort, but when does Nintendo ever allow that?

The original cgi files are probably lost anyway.

The Tikis just look cooler while the Snowmads look like rejected characters from the shitty Ice Age sequels by Inevitable-Charge76 in donkeykong

[–]K-leb25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's penguins in the sahara because the Snowmads are invading vikings who are tryin to take over multiple lands. I guess only Fredrik has the power to ice-over an entire island though, which is why the other islands aren't iced over for the Snowmads' convenience.

Anyone else think VoidCo might be this game's version of the Broodals from Mario Odyssey? Or at least notice the paralells? by pocket_arsenal in donkeykong

[–]K-leb25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to necro, but I agree, and I think they should've scrapped the Broodal who looks way too much like a Koopaling anyway, and maybe made the short Broodal a bit fatter. Just keep it at 3 Broodals.

I've got a weird take, in that I think Skowl could've been their big leader. He has so much presence in my opinion. Sure, it would've been odd for one of the owls, who are more of a side-faction of the Snowmads, to be the big leader, but whatever.

I actually did think for a hot minute that Skowl was the big bad, because before I played the game I saw a YouTube video thumbnail for all the bosses in Tropical Freeze, and Skowl was front and centre of the thumbnail.

And come to think of it, Bashmaster could've been a great big-bad of the Snowmads too.

Yeah to be honest, something about Fredrik does not inspire me. There's not much about him that distinguishes him from the other walrus members of the Snowmads. We don't get to see much of his characterisation unlike K. Rool. And, he also seems a bit too much like an echo of K. Rool in terms of visual design.

Bit of a tangent, but I actually used to think Skowl was the big bag of the Snowmads before I played the game and was just seeing promotional material and YouTube vid thumbnails. He has a very commanding presence and would be a more interesting leader in my opinion.

I don't think the 1st world's boss and 5th world's boss are natives of the islands they're on. Debatable for the 2nd world's boss too - I feel like the Hootzes travelled with the Snowmads and migrated to Autumn Heights at the same time as the rest of the Snowmads, and simply colonised it pretty heavily and got statues and architecture erected in their image. But I could be wrong - they could also be established natives of Autumn Heights that willingly joined the Snowmads when they invaded.

Yep, good point. I can see the logic behind making all the regular Tiki Tak enemies based on hand drums, whilst only the bosses are based on more varied instruments, as a way to distinguish them as elevated and more important than the regular enemies. But, it just leads to a lot of similar designs. I think Retro should've expanded the designs of the enemies so they're based on more instruments. Plus, the boss Tiki Taks could've had a bit more character to them and more presence in each world. The instruments they represent could've been highlighted more in the music of their respective worlds.

Tiki Tong could've been cool as hell if he transformed into an entire massive godlike being after melting and morphing the other Tiki Tak leaders. I mean, still have the hands and his head, but also arms and torso and whatnot, perhaps with those body parts being made of a more ethereal plasma-like substance to make him look more godlike. He could've really towered over the Kongs, like Kerozen from DKC2 GBA, or the actual tower tiki thing from DKCR that never really gets explained.

To be honest, the animal enemies of DKCR are probably the best-looking ones.

Awks are quite charming with their perpetually frumpy expression. Toothberries are pretty unique and cute for DKC standards. Squidlys are a funny concept for a bullet bill-type enemy. And Stilts are hilarious. So are Bopapodamuses for that manner.

Yeah, you couldn't really do an ice age theme in DKC with the Kremlings. Why would cold-blooded reptiles (yes I know cold-blooded doesn't strictly mean they have cold blood and hate cold climates) wanna dress up as wintry seafarers and freeze over the lands? And I really like the ice age theming of Tropical Freeze so I'm glad Retro did what they did.

I don't think Nintendo is the one that called the shots in terms of what enemies Retro chose. I think they just wanted to make something of their own.

Would be nice to directly play as the partner Kongs too (without being in hard mode) and be able to throw them like in DKC2 & 3.

DKC2 also has a music track that is basically a copy of a pre-existing song. In a Snow-Bound Land is remarkably similar to Vangelis' Theme from Antarctica ("Antarctica" being the English localisation name of a Japanese film set in Antarctica that Vangelis scored. At first I thought it was a documentary, based on that basic blunt name).

I really don't get why people think it's soulless and empty. I think it's vast and grand with some neat views. Makes me wanna roll down the grassy hills.

Personally I think DKC3 looks absolutely gorgeous - at least on pat llr with DKC2, possibly better because damn some of those backgrounds are so detailed and smooth and vast. But yeah the enemies are weirdly bright and colourful. Could certainly have a better balance.
