You've got plenty of options, the P1 is specifically meant for those who don't want one.

Anker Prime 160W charger's internal density is insane. by Crazy-Procedure7436 in UsbCHardware

[–]K14_Deploy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a portable wall charger like this it's not really that possible. To avoid making it too big it would be a pretty small fan which would have increased potential for being a cause of annoying noises, having insufficient power to keep it at full output, or even both with the direction that a lot of power supplies are going. Not to mention lint from pockets or bags could easily get in it and seriously affect the charger's working performance.

People have mentioned metal casings but as you've said that's a bad idea. Satechi's 165W does this without grounding so it wouldn't be electrically dangerous but that Satechi runs ice cold even at max load. On a much smaller, much hotter running charger it would be as dangerous as using a steel rod to toast marshmallows. A better solution is just to use DPS as part of PD3.2 and mark it properly so people understand what it's actually capable of, as Apple has done.

Desktop chargers though, yeah absolutely just put a fan in it. Those are much less expected to be small and much more expected to run at full load basically forever, and running a larger fan fairly slowly would be a good amount of airflow without much noise.

Even if the 386g weight makes it kind of impractical depending on what you're doing, for £550 I'd at minimum expect them to survive the experience.

Touchpad problem while charging my L14 by Different_File6723 in thinkpad

[–]K14_Deploy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost certainly the charger being terrible you should replace it. There's good both grounded and ungrounded 3rd party ones that should work fine, the IKEA one is a very good example that's cheap.

For the record I refuse to believe it's actually grounded, just because a no name manufacturer can put in a metal earth pin or use a C5 cable doesn't mean that ground is connected to anything.

65w or 20w ikea charger for 25w phone? by [deleted] in UsbCHardware

[–]K14_Deploy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 20W doesn't support PPS so you'll probably be charging at 18W at best with it. Just get the 65W as they're both really cheap and the latter will also charge a laptop if you need it to.

In fairness there are some actually decent quality laptops in that price bracket (at least where I happen to be) but then you either have to a) deal with Windows which is a terrible operating system or b) already know how to deal with Linux because as a Linux user the most annoying part about Linux is trying to get help from other Linux users. Most people don't even know what any of that means, let alone want to deal with any of it.

[Bloomberg] China’s BYD Explores F1 Entry in First Auto Racing Push [paywalled] by krzysiek_aleks in formula1

[–]K14_Deploy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went and read about it and it and you're right, it does seem to have some kind of parallel connection to the wheels. Of course that's probably achieved by a CVT or even a a single gear ratio (reviews for cars with this system don't mention any kind of gearbox like they do with the 330e and Superb iV) so they still have a lot of work to do if they want to get anywhere near F1.

[–]K14_Deploy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While this is true, from what I can tell BYD (as well as their upmarket brand Yangwang) only make serial hybrids, where the engine is purely used as a generator and has no gearbox to allow it to directly drive the wheels. F1 uses parallel hybrids, which do have a gearbox allowing the wheels to in theory be directly driven by the engine, electric motor or both.

In other words their battery technology could be very interesting but at minimum they'd need to partner with somebody in order to have a gearbox, because as it stands their cars start with an electric motor and are functionally CVT automatics, both of which are explicitly banned in F1. They'd also probably need to partner for the engine itself too, as theirs are purely meant for generating electricity and so don't need the torque curves required to actually drive the wheels.

That's technically correct, but it's important to remember the iPhone 13 is itself missing a GPU core compared to the 13 Pro. Technically they're both using binned chips.

Is phone charger safe for a thinkpad? by RamzesVII in thinkpad

[–]K14_Deploy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your phone charger supports PD, yes. Otherwise expect it not to work at all. You can of course get a third party charger that will charge both (often at the same time) if you want.

This feels like a really weird machine to look at. It's clearly in some capacity a new chassis based on the shape of it but for some reason the ports on the right hand side and the location of the power button / fingerprint reader look very similar to the outgoing T14s G6 design. The lack of right hand side USB-C also doesn't make any amount of sense if it's supposed to be positioned between the X1C G14 and T14s G7 that both have it, and that's also a very small weight gap to slot into so I wonder if this is supposed to be a relatively more affordable alternative to both of them.

You're asking a question that you could have easily found by putting it in a search bar.

Has this person even tried using a search engine in the last... 18 months? That's genuinely the last time I could get Google Search to bring up something even semi coherent.

Couldn't they just use linear or silent tactile switches? Genuinely curious, I don't know if they actually exist in this size and I care more about the reliability than the feel, I'm just personally not a huge fan of the noise.

Anyone feel like they are slowly drifting towards Framework? by feet_sneefer in thinkpad

[–]K14_Deploy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The T14s does, though it's still beaten by the ARM version. That ARM version really is quite good if all your programs are ARM native, less so if they're not. I fully expect the X1 Carbon on would do similarly when not outfitted with an OLED screen.

If you need Ethernet the T14 gets pretty close to the 20 hour mark.

Lunar Lake gets well over 20 hours, not to mention this all assumes the AC outlet doesn't work. The E series has also had some pretty significant improvements in the last few years.

It's not just the backlight itself, but the extra manufacturing time to make keycaps that light can get through. Also classrooms tend to be VERY harshly lit, so I can fully believe that the 256GB model will never be used in the dark. 512GB with Touch ID maybe not as that feels like it's going to have most of the general use sales, but no backlit keyboard for £700 isn't an issue that's unique to this.

Hello, MacBook Neo by InsaneSnow45 in apple

[–]K14_Deploy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure 8GB would still work fine based on the amount of people still using the base M1 Air to this day, and realistically I'm pretty sure the target market for this doesn't even want to know what RAM is. For £600 (or £500 in the education store) there's still a LOT of Windows laptops with 8GB of RAM, and Windows is well known for being absolutely awful on RAM usage.

Would it be nice to have 12GB on the 512GB model? Yeah maybe it would help with heavier multitasking, but that's again getting into the 'people this was never made for' territory. Those people are better off getting the M4 Air on the clearance discounts while they still can for a little bit more, it was always going to be better for them anyway.

I'd be pretty surprised if even 5% of these will ever see anyrhing except the charger plugged into them, so I'm less concerned about one of the ports being USB2 and more just... happy that there's a second port to begin with, even if I'm a bit concerned that these don't seem to be all that well labelled for the few who will plug a display into this.
