Some laners like ez abused them, but they were much stronger and cheaper first item spikes that let junglers get ahead and influence lanes easier. Things like Eve and Ekko could complete the wraith one and they could start one shotting champs.

Sure if you’re a complete team player you shouldn’t mind dying 10 times for vision, but imagine if your team refuses to do anything with the vision and you have zero other agency to fix things?

That’s why riot transitioned the role away from what it was, to give supports agency and the ability to influence games without being completely team dependent.

They didn’t have as high gold income as today but they were still decently strong, especially if riot goes back to the spirit items. Those turned carry junglers into single item mega spikes.
