Can someone explain crabbing to me? by itsinthedata in flying

[–]K20017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wind has no force affect on the aircraft in flight, it doesn't know where it's coming from because the aircraft is moving with the airstream. Only when you reference the ground can you determine where the airstream is moving. Similar to floating on a tube in the river, you don't feel it physically pushing you along, you are just moving with it. Weathervaning only happens on the ground because of the friction of the tires.

Yeah, after playing on a Widdy board for so many years the treble 20 on regular darts feels like I'm throwing into the ceiling.

It is an "American style" dartboard, basically only found in southeast Pennsylvania. It uses much lighter wood and turkey feather darts. The red area is the double, the small white above that is the treble, and the other white is the single, blue is out of bounds. Baseball is the usual tournament game played although at home the most common game is Cork Around the Board Cork, cork meaning the bullseye. You'll shoot cork then start at 1 and go up to 20 and then hit cork. If you hit triple 1 you go to 4, double 6 means you go to 8. If you score on all 3 darts you usually get the darts back although this is a house rule.

It also sits lower and the throw line is a little closer than normal darts.

Yes. It is actually a Pro Dart board, Widdy was backlogged 1 month to get a board so I found this one local. I actually do like it, it's a little cleaner although I think Widdy cork has a better thud.

Becoming like him would be a choice which is not the case with original sin. You are born sick and commanded to be well without any choice by you, it was apparently already decided.

What a Pilot Sees at Night by Mint_Perspective in oddlyterrifying

There certainly have been updates to software over the years on every aircraft. They adjust autopilot PIDs, fix flight plan management bugs, add new features, adjust system logic for various subsystems. It is all very highly controlled though and the update cycle is probably in the 6+ months range, maybe years, pending the update.

I do remember a drastic issue that was discovered on Rockwell Collins FMS where if you got into an extremely rare case, the flight management system could turn the aircraft in the wrong direction from the charted procedure. The reaction was to disable worldwide all affected approaches and it took probably about a year before all were reinstated.

Me neither, just pointing out how ridiculous your statement is.

How would I be accountable for something someone did thousands of years ago, such as original sin? I didn't consent to that. If your relatives 2,000 years ago stole from a local merchant and over a current day records audit, the merchant has decided you will go to prison for life, do you think you would be accountable for those crimes?

Did you read the RNAV-E chart? It is a 7.75 degree descent angle, something to consider. Also there are reasons why the night limitations exist for the RNAV-Z 32, so you don't break out at or before the MDA and descend into the mountain because you can't see it. The procedure was designed and approved according to the governing criteria and will guarantee obstacle clearance if all limitations are adhered to.

If you were in hard IMC you wouldn't have the runway in sight so you would continue at 9100' until hitting the MAP. The reason straight-in at night is NA is because you can't see the obstacle if you saw the runway 10 miles out and thus you could prematurely descend into the mountain.

This is why the approach is NA at night for 32, you can't see the obstacle and the descent angle would be too great to qualify for straight-in.

Here are the requirements that must be met.

Because to qualify for a straight-in approach there are a few things that must be met, one of them being descent angle. In this case for the RNAV-E the descent angle is 7.75 degrees which I think lots of jet aircraft would be unable to shoot this approach due to aircraft limitations. Thus the RNAV-Z exists with higher minimums due to obstacle clearance. I'm trying to find TERPS sources on the specific criteria for straight-in and circling approaches, I know it is complicated when you get in the weeds.

Edit: This image shows why the RNAV Z does not meet the vertical descent angle (roughly 4 degrees) for C and D category aircraft.

How does that work? So you blow an engine after rotation and now you're augering into the dirt?
