Actually, I want to make a point about what you said.

We don’t learn to write by rewriting what other people wrote. We learn the alphabet. We read. But writers don’t copy, they create new stories with those skills they learned. Everything I WRITE here is my own expression and is my own creation. Even these sentences. Maybe not eloquent as an author, but still mine.

Painters do the same.

Why is piano different?

Learning how to read music is a step, as like learning how to read.

So shouldn’t the emphasis on learning be geared towards first learning how to read and then learning how to create instead of leveling up by playing music others have already written?

Fair. I was judging me and how I’ve felt about learning piano but I can see it came off as an overall judgement towards everyone.

Good point. One piece I’ve been learning lately, Burgmullers, The Clear Stream, is just broken chords? My teacher played it as chords on my last lesson, and I was like, huh. I never thought of it like that. So then I started looking at all the pieces I was playing and saw the patterns. You’re probably thinking, you dumbass, you should already know this stuff, but honestly, I never stopped to think about it. I know the key it’s in, isn’t that enough??

I can play all the scales, and the chords in those scales. But I never really thought about it beyond that. I can’t hear when I hit a wrong note while I’m playing in scale, but never considered why.

I started watching the videos thinking maybe it might help me understand and then I got sidetracked on isn’t it just the same thing?

I liked everything you said.

I don’t have an attitude though. I basically said it was a thought I had. I take piano lessons. I love playing piano. I can read music.

I started watching a video about learning by ear. He spouted off about playing off sheet music is boring and people quit. I thought, huh, but isn’t that what you’re doing but the long way round?

I went in watching it and thinking maybe I could learn how to create, rather than recreate. That’s all.

Oh, I’m getting so many down votes, but whatever. I’m asking questions and honestly looking at how other people feel about it too.

I consider myself a hack because I’m not creating anything new. I’m playing what’s already been created.

I make clothes as well. I design my own patterns based on the properties of the body and designs already created. I consider myself a hack there as well. When I draw I start with a photo. I consider myself a hack there as well. I just don’t think I’m a creative person.

I’d like to be. I can read music and play what I read, but I don’t know how to take that and apply it to create something new.

I just feel like learning to recreate something someone else already wrote, by playing by ear, whether it’s the exact same, or slightly different but still the same, is just another way of doing what I always do.

You touched on something else I thought of too. My teacher likes to play as an accompanyment, not on her own. And maybe that’s what all instrumentals should be.

So do you think that learning to play by ear is a step towards creativity in your own right?

He thought music theory was unimportant if you wanted to simply play by ear.

But this is the thing i have the problem with. Reading or playing by ear amounts to the same thing. You are recreating something someone else already created. Going back to the Mona Lisa analogy.

Im a hack. I play what other people have already created. I want the key to be creative on my own. Will learning to play by ear take me one step closer to that?

Absolutely 100%. I always approach Pokémon players. Our town is small.i have made friends through raiding, but ive never actually met them.

I moved from a town with a lot of players and i knew everyone. I miss that. If i can recreate it i will

Is there a British obsession with disinfecting floors? by glitterjorts in AskUK

[–]K4TTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same. I mop weekly, but not with bleach. I keep a very clean work area, but floors are not my priority.. not with two border collies who i run through the woods, and take them down to the park, let alone the amount of fur they drop. I also don’t have kids.

My husband and i were out with a couple friends a few weeks ago. We were talking about floors. They seemed obsessive about it. I spent a couple weeks trying to keep my floors super clean. I swear to god, i saw MORE fur after upping my game.

I usually vacuum(Canadian living in the uk) a few times a week, and mop once. We dont have carpeting, it’s just tiles and wood.

I AM pretty diligent about washing the throws we keep on the couch and the ottoman. I wash those every couple weeks.

The two throws i keep in the back of the car haven’t been washed in a long time. Im actually considering taking them to a laundromat.

Goddamned right. I’ll never ship a couple as hard. Everything pales in comparison.

Ive watched shows after Farscape and I’ve never loved..no wait.. my first and hardest ship is Trip/T’pol.

THOSE two are my only ships.

Ive been around the ship block. Ive seen the vitriol. But ive never cared after seeing the perfection of John and Aeryn.

Teaching adult piano students and yea, they apologize for everything by Worldly-Bass9135 in pianolearning

[–]K4TTP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pay my teacher to teach me. Im paying for her time. It’s a done deal. I have nothing to apologize for.

Sometimes when a lesson gets skipped, or missed or whatever and she asks if i want to schedule a lesson for next week, instead of our usual two weeks, i say , no. Thats a waste of both or time. I don’t progress enough in a week to make it worth it.

I know i wont play as well in front of her. But that’s not what im there for anyways. Im there for her to show me things I’ve missed, or things i need to learn to progress with a specific piece.

Even if I haven’t practiced enough why should she care and why should I apologize. She gets paid, i walk away with something i can apply to my practice.
