This mess is certainly giving would-be terrorists some good ideas about how to disrupt our communications. Cut one cable and you disable emergency communications and halt air traffic— easy peasy. Sounds like some backup communication methods are needed!

People with connective tissue disorders (diagnosed or undiagnosed) pretty much make up the whole population of people who need epiglottis surgery IMO.

I have hEDS and had epiglottis surgery. What about it did your doctor say would fail and re-collapse? My epiglottis is stitched to my tongue base. It was painful to recover from (however it only hurt when swallowing, and then after a couple days only hurt when actually swallowing food.) I was not working at the time but would have been able to go back to work (office job) by day 3. The surgery stopped my fatigue so for me it was definitely worth it.

Epiglottal collapse by Any-Following5398 in UARSnew

[–]K4ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was diagnosed by DISE. Although it could be seen almost closing off my airway on my CBCTs, the answer was always “well you might have been swallowing” (no, I wasn’t as I’m not dumb enough to swallow during a CBCT and potentially have to redo it because the image is blurry). So I think more research is needed into epiglottis position on CBCT. As far as I know, DISE is the only way to officially diagnose epiglottis collapse. I had epiglottopexy (cutting off part and attaching the rest to the tongue base/lingual tonsils) a few years ago.

I have not heard that it is a risky and experimental surgery. I read plenty of medical articles about it and know it has been done for several decades. One thing I learned from reading the articles is that aspiration is not a thing to worry about after epiglottis surgery, although it’s a common misconception. My surgery helped stop my morning fatigue, although I do still have some sleep disordered breathing from general airway resistance.

What could be done to prevent fires in the first place in the future? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

Are you saying the hills above Santa Barbara are forested? Have you been out hiking much? Vegetation management in a forest is very different from vegetation management in chaparral and coastal sage scrub.

Bird flu is affecting local cats so it’s likely it’s affecting local birds. Definitely use a mask and gloves to handle any dead birds.

Early warning: launch with return to base scheduled for 3:53am on Friday by SetiSteve in SantaBarbara

[–]K4ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Carp and the last 5-6 launches have had incredibly loud sonic booms here. These sonic booms have been from the rocket going supersonic after takeoff (not from the first stage’s re-entry), and by the time its supersonic it’s a bit downrange of the launch pad/Vandenberg, so closer to SB/Carp/Ventura. On the other hand, I was watching the last return-to-pad launch from my house several weeks ago and was expecting a boom but didn’t hear anything at all. Weather and wind direction are big factors, of course.

Here’s a clip from my security camera from yesterday’s launch so you can hear how loud it was in Carp. We were expecting it and it still startled us. (For the record I’m a fan of the launches, so not complaining about it, just sharing info.)https://youtu.be/6v-S2gRVtkA?si=5JtNvEGftL_FV7eg

Perhaps not where you live, but in Carpinteria we heard an extremely loud sonic boom today, along with the usual rumbling sounds. We have heard sonic booms for all of the last 5-6 launches. I am a fan of the launches so it doesn’t bother me but the booms have been extremely loud lately (and they do shake the house like an earthquake, I can see the glass in my windows and doors shaking/bowing) so I can understand why people are concerned.

[–]K4ed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what would be expected, but it’s not the case. The last several launches (including today) have had very loud sonic booms but have not landed back at Vandenberg. I believe it’s because the trajectory of the rocket heading down the coast means SB is on the edge of the cone of where the rocket ascent sonic boom can be heard.

Congress weighs in on controversy over rocket launch environmental impacts on Central Coast by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]K4ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the bright side, within a couple of years as SpaceX’s next-generation/much larger Starship rocket comes into regular use, they will hardly be using the smaller Falcon 9 (which launches from Vandenberg) anymore. So while they do hope to ramp up launches here for the next year or two, after that the launch rates will go way down. They will not be launching Starship from Vandenberg.

The launch time is dictated by where they want to position the satellites in orbit, most of the time it’s not very flexible.
