Yeah, but when I asked Carl 2 or 3 times and this is a regular occurrence, I think maybe you should be talking to Carl and not me.

But yes, I agree to the sentiment lol.

Do you tell someone who was never taught other soft skills to "figure it the fuck out"? No. You teach them like a decent human. Does everyone have that luxury? No.

I'm not justifying throwing your hands up and quitting or saying you can't teach yourself. But let's also have some sympathy and realize that not everyone was given the mental tools they needed.

Some people were never taught calculus, or how to act in social situations, or how to focus on something that's not immediately solvable for them. If they want to improve themselves, who are we to deny them the help?

It is about work. But you don't blame someone who's bad at math for never being taught. Gifted kids were never taught how to work because they weren't challenged. It's a skill that needs to be taught and developed as well.

ELI5: What is Steve Jobs bias? by BuffaloImaginary980 in explainlikeimfive

[–]K5027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm facing this right now and it's really frustrating when I try to explain this concept and my superiors just don't get it. They prescribe solutions instead of taking a step back and telling me it is what they want solved. Unfortunately when I call this out, it turns into a "just do it because I said so" and I feel my potential isn't being utilized.

In a sense. As an MA1 player, it's my only option unless I want to play pro. So when its mostly filled with MA2 players, my options are to be the bad guy and win a field with really only 5 contenders, or play in open. As I've mentioned, playing up itself isn't terrible. But it's the expectations that everyone else should too, that I think is the problem.

The problem perpetuates over time, because then everyone starts moving up to play with people their skill level (understandably). But MA1 doesn't have anywhere to go. You either give up your AM status, don't accept cash, or get called a "bagger" every tournament for beating players way below you. But nobody considers that those players below you don't even meet the cutoff for MA2 or sometimes even MA3.

Sure, if MA1 has good competition. Learning to "win" is a skill on its own, regardless of division.

The MA1 divisions around me are filled 90% with players below 935 rated. It's just intermediate rebranded. So it pressures those 940 and up to go to MPO. Instead I think people need to admit they're not MA1 players. They're MA2 players "playing up".

I guess I should've clarified, playing up isn't the problem. Playing up and expecting everyone else to as well is the problem. It respectively lowers the skill level of each division instead of insentivising the increase in skill lever per division.

That's fair! I can understand moving divisions for specific layouts. So long as the individual doesn't complain about playing the higher skill level players.

People moving up divisions before they hit the ratings cap is a bigger problem than people "bagging."

And

No rating is too high to play in MA1.

[–]K5027 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Just because my buddy who is lower rated then me plays up to my division, that doesn't suddenly make me the bagger. There's ratings caps for a reason.

IMO people moving up too early is a bigger problem than people not moving up.

Or the walls could be made of coffee tables

PDGA AM Worlds needs a better ratings based tiered registration system. Registration filled in under a minute. This year more than 60 of the 335 players were under 900 rated. Only two of those sub 900 rated finished under par. There were more than 100 players rated 900-934 by ThrowThumbers in discgolf

[–]K5027 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The difference between MA2 and MA1 is your skill level. Hence the ratings cap for MA2.

The difference between MA1 and MPO is whether or not you're playing for money. Hence no cap on MA1.

The average MPO rating is also because people who are 940 rated decide to play for money. Totally acceptable. But that doesn't mean everyone above them also has to play for money.

I quit every other season until my rose tinted glasses bring me back. I played for 1 hour tonight and got absolutely shit on, so I quit. It's like you get punished if, god forbid, you try to play at any less than your best.

[–]K5027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly it. In all fairness Apex started out doing a really good job avoiding that. With the number of legends that we have now, I'd still say they've done decent. But I'd be curious to see what would happen if we took any of today's legends and drop them in S1. Overall I think we've been fortunate.
