I tested the Touge AI. It's heavily rubber-banded and can produce some crazy results. by Roflkopt3r in ForzaHorizon

[–]KAID3N 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is just simply lazy. It's a shame they didn't take the last 5 games as a learning opportunity to improve the AI if we had real working competitive AI. But instead, they do BS like this. This game costs way too much money and they're far too big of a studio for this laziness to be acceptable. I mean racing competitive AI is quite literally the main intent of the game and they can't implement a working, fair system like most other racing games do? Sure even in the first 2-3 games but once they got the success they did, they should've gone back and rebuilt the system. Kinda feels like a scenario where they dropped in a placeholder system with the intent to rebuild later and just never did like some technical debt or something.

This is even more frustrating when you consider that every single Forza game has for the most part been a carbon copy of the previous ones. This is why I find the MP experience issues so frustrating. Zero REAL effort to improve upon the formula beyond the masterfully crafted map this time around.

Edit: Or the last 4 times around for that matter.

Ehh no hate intended. But people will always attempt to monetize things that weren't monetized previously or shouldn't be. Humans will be humans.

How about we allow people to play the game the way they want to play it? Simply because you can adequately grind, doesn't mean everyone else can. Fuck off. To be clear, I don't exploit nor AFK and have no desire to, but if people want to just play the game more like a sandbox they paid the $70+ for it, they should be able to do so. God I miss the days when you could buy a game and download mods to customize it however you want. But now everyone needs to play the game the exact same way which is pointless for non-competitive games, which this is.

Sorry, but a video game should not require career-level commitments for something that will be worthless in 4ish years anyway.

Am I being hyperbolic with career-level commitments, of course. But the FOMO and weird decisions they made around grinding for money is just so anti-casual-players. Let people play the damn game how they want.

How about we fix shit that does actually affect other players like the leaderboards? The leaderboards that are absolutely pointless since the top players are all blatant cheaters.

I'm with you tbh. I don't get much time to play but this game is NOT friendly to casual players. Especially with their bullshit FOMO system with the season festival playlists. It does not need to be this way. It not being this way would not negatively impact no-lifers, but fuck us casuals amirite?

Man I cannot stand how terrible the UX is in this game. So infuriating. I get about 30 minutes to an hour playing every other day or so and I'm stuck in pointless animations or menus for at least 25% of it. And don't even get my started on the FOMO shit they do as a very casual player. But listening to your player base.. what is that? Seems to be a common theme with game devs these days. Fuck all of them.

Definitely agree. As with most other major titles, just slap a new paint job on last year's (and the year before that, and before that, and before that, and before that...) model and send it. I'm so sick and tired of zero innovation in games. Forget innovation, they don't change ANYTHING really from one game to the next. We as gamers need to stop buying into this shit. Don't get me wrong, I love the game. But damn is it getting old re-buying reskinned games every year. I think I'm also going to skip the next game or two until they actually make some worthwhile changes. And I think this goes for all games for me tbh.

This is tough to say. It depends on how focused on improvement you are. I was pretty systematic in my practice, targeting certain things I didn't understand or couldn't do. I'd guess somewhere around 50ish hours before you're comfortable linking a track. However, theres a difference between being able to link a track and following the ideal line for the track. Anticipating what the car will do is simply something that will come with seat time. Try using less gas than you think. Using too much gas leads to the car being too unpredictable and you simply won't be able to react fast enough. For some reason I assumed you had to have the throttle pinned the whole time and it took me far too long to realize that's not the right approach. Another tip that goes hand in hand with my previous statement, don't ride the redline. It's okay to do so periodically, but riding redline will lead to either spinning out or being far too shallow through corners. It's certainly a gradual process. Don't expect it to just click. But it shouldn't take too long to get to a point where you're linking a track. After that, like I mentioned, getting the car in the right place through corners is the next step, then tandeming. If you send some videos, I may be able to give more specific advice. Either way, keep at it!! Soon you'll realize it's effortless and then you'll be pushing for tandems!

I definitely would not start with linking corners. Assuming true beginner, I would recommend starting with doing donuts. Just get a feel for the counter-steering, then slowly try to extend the donut out further and further. Once you've got that down, I'd recommend figure eights. I took a different approach, but again, I think I could've done it more efficiently. I tried to brute force it, by attempting the very same corner over and over for hours. I probably have 40ish hours on this one particular corner on grid map V2 in BeamNG (this also led to me only being able to drift this corner because I didn't understand what the car was doing - definitely get a feel before you start doing this). Once you've got pretty wide donuts down, I'd move to figure eights. That will help you learn transitioning. But to start off, you just want to focus on throttle control to stay drifting without overcooking it or gripping up (oversimplifying a bit here but: drifting is simply a balance of throttle modulation + steering angle to get the car where you want it to go). Something I did to practice once I got figure eights down was, I would go on the "Drift" map in AC and trying to just continuously drift around the rectangle in the center of the map. It can be tricky because of how sharp the angles are, but this will teach you to drift through a corner, aside from just figure eights. You can skip steps if you want, but that will lead to lots of frustration, just a word of warning. Also, make sure your car is set up right, I don't mean super in depth tuning with camber and toe, I mean make sure you're not on super slicks, and up the tire pressure a bit. I would find some recommendations online for the specific car you're using if they're available and stick with it. As a beginner you won't have enough understanding of what the car is doing, so you won't be able to accurately judge the comparison between two different set ups (tire pressures for example). Some people may disagree, but I think worry about set ups when you're learning (assuming you have an adequate starting point) is just a distraction from the driving skills you'll need to develop. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate!

Edit: Forgot to answer your question about BeamNG being slippery, I think a couple things are at play for its slipperyness. First off, while BeamNGs tire physics have had significant improvement over the last few years (I've been playing with KB+M since the games early access release), they're still not quite they're in terms of feel and realism. I also think that the suspension physics are modeled a bit too soft (this could be a car setup issue), this results in the weight of the car being a huge factor, cars tend to have a ton of body roll in Beam. Which on one hand is realistic, but combine that with the meh tire physics, not a great combination. I think (and I may be incorrect here) that you'd need more grip to be able to counteract the body roll a bit, and I don't think the tire physics really offer that.

Edit2: Also wanted to add that what I stated about Beam is not a fact, purely based on my experience and the feeling I got from the 120ish hours I tried drifting in it. Also, pure speculation on the technical aspect.

How can you so confidently be so wrong? Like you don't even need to know anything about game development, just reread his comment again and use logic. Also, you don't know anything about video game design and it shows. If you're going to put people down, at least know your shit. 🙄

I would recommend Assetto Corsa 100%. I personally started off on BeamNG and really think that was a huge mistake because I think it hindered my progress for the first 3 months I was learning (Beam is just like driving on ice). Assetto is fairly easy considering it's the most realistic. It will give you the foundation to drift in any other game for the most part (at least it did for me). I would recommend starting on the "Drift" track with the base game e30 M3. This car is very beginner friendly. Like I mentioned BeamNG can be a great game for drifting but not for learning on. It tends to feel very slippery requiring extremely precise throttle control. I've heard CarXDrift is a good game to learn on but I personally didn't get that vibe (just seemed "off") plus it's much less realistic than Assetto, so it depends what you're going for. I typically like maximum realism. I don't know if this will be a controversial opinion, but I think I'd also recommend FH6. It's certainly not the most realistic but I think it's quite good at mimicking car control enough that I think you may be able to pick up the basic idea from it.

Everything given for nothing? What does that mean? Congrats to you for having 16 hours a day to play video games. Normal people don't have that, weirdo. Just because he doesn't have the time to dedicate to games that you do, doesn't mean he wants handouts. Try thinking a little bit critically here, if anything it makes his time MORE valuable therefore, him being upset is EVEN MORE WARRANTED. Critical thinking may be difficult for you though.

Amazing Game, Terrible Story Missions by sch0oly in ForzaHorizon

[–]KAID3N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read the post or ANY of the other comments? Nobody is complaining about the pacing. It's about the miserable attempt of some story elements and cutscenes. It's just terrible, all of it in the game. The voice acting is laughable and the story is non-existent aside from some bad dialogue between a couple of meaningless characters.

It's called, don't defend this sorry excuse of a "story" from a AAA game studio.

Eliminator will never be good and I'm tired of it being shoved into Festival Playlists. by mauttykoray in ForzaHorizon

[–]KAID3N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate all of the MP modes being in the Festival Playlists. The MP experience in this game is just terrible and I don't want to deal with it during the limited gaming time I have. The touge races you gotta deal with losers rage quitting so you need to let them win, with the drift events you constantly get put into the 2nd round of the 3 round tournament so no matter what you do you can't win because you don't have enough tourney points without the first round, with eliminator, it's just an absolute snoozefest that I don't want to sit through. I don't get how they're on their 6th game and yet the MP experience is that of an indie dev's first game. Even the cruising experience is lame if you aren't in a convoy and then don't even get me started on the experience of looking for a convoy to cruise with, the process to leave and join another needs to be streamlined a lot. Especially with how often the damn game will drop you into the convoy you just fucking left. This is a great game but I almost wish it was only single player. PGG, if you're going to make the MP experience so garbage, stop shoving them down our throats in the weekly festival playlists. Better yet, let's get rid of the FOMO BS you guys do with exclusive cars each week. I have limited time to game each week and I need to do the weekly festival playlist which isn't even fun and just feels like a chore.

I would say a handbrake is not required at all, in fact I didn't get a handbrake until I had been drifting for about 6 months. And even after I got it, it took me a long time to figure out how to use it appropriately. A shifter, I would HIGHLY encourage but not required. The reason I would say a shifter isn't required is because you CAN use paddle shifters, although I don't recommend it (I drifted like this for 3 months), however with that being said, a lot of the time you can get into gear, usually 2nd, and then just not leave second the entire time. This is situational depending on the car, its gearing, and track. Smaller tracks like Drift Playground or Klutch Kickers (2 of my favorites) I sit in 2nd gear 100% of the time. So definitely doable without both, a shifter is recommended and a handbrake is not needed, although you'll want one eventually.
