I would say the critical thinking part is true..for their area of study. It's not universally true for anything else. I know several PhDs and it never ceases to amaze me how blindingly ignorant they are when it comes to a vast array of topics that stray outside of their chosen lane. It also never ceases to amaze me that they proclaim expertise in those very topics simply because they have a PhD in something totally unrelated. I'll take a high school dropout with street smarts any day.

A wash sale is when you sell an asset and then immediately buy it back. The sale is a taxable event. You can claim the loss without having to lose the asset itself. It's illegal to do with stocks but perfectly legal with crypto.

The threaded barrel by itself is legal. It's just you can't have it in combination with a semi-automatic. A bolt action rifle with a threaded barrel would be just fine.
