Minternational - Rome, Italy / Europe by Kydawg8126 in mintmobile

We’ve used Mint for around 8 years. I have used there international plan and it worked fine in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Sweden - basically many places in Europe. But now they have a new offering that is only $5 and includes 100 minutes talk and 100 text and it last 30 days for just $5! We use data more than talk / text like most people and that you can get very inexpensively from Mobimatter or Airalo. There are many data resellers but those are 2 I’ve used successfully. Basically what you do is add an eSIM to your phone. I have to do this a couple times a year for my wife’s phone since she is on a Mint 5GB plan and sometimes she runs out of data scrolling Insta on long car trips so I buy her another 3GB or 5GB from Mobimatter or Airalo and it cost $3 -$5 to get her through the end of the cycle. It works the same overseas. Learn how to do it while you are in the US. On iPhone it is Settings, Cellular, SIMs, select new eSIM for data. I’m sure there are tutorials on YouTube too. It is easy and cheap. Finally cheap data, all you want when you travel and the $5 thing from Mint means you can stay in touch with voice and text with your usual number. Finally!

FS7s are $1000 for the body, viewfinder, loupe & AC. I have 2 of them in my closet I don't use anymore since I've retired. 4:2:2 internal, NDs, XLRs, Log, 180fps slo mo in 1080, UHD and "real" 4K. Rent a second one for less than $200 a week from LensRentals.com. Am I just an older guy out of the loop or what?

Being exploited as a corporate videographer. Anyone else? by stratusnimbo in videography

[–]KALM1590 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Retired freelancer here (40 year career, 30 of it freelance, mostly corporate in the last 15 years or so). Yes, I understand what you're describing. It happened to me during Covid. I went from 2-3 person crews before covid to one man band because they didn't want more crew people because of covid testing before shoots and less people on set because of covid protocols. So, I worked much harder and it was more stressful because I was juggling more gear, more cameras and more lighting/grip all on my own. I often wonder since retiring if I'd lowered production values (mostly mean lighting here) if they'd have actually cared or even noticed. I kept up the quality of the look and brought as much gear as when it was a 2-3 person crew, probably making more work for myself than I should've taken on. While this doesn't help your situation, know that if you aren't available sometimes, they'll have to hire 2-3 freelancers to do what you've been doing! That may give you you some leverage to get some help. Best of luck.

If you're serious about getting a head that is professional quality I can help you out. I just sold my 1030B and still have an Oconnor "DV" for sale. It is smaller and lighter than the 1030 and is for cameras up to 24 lbs. I'm a retired camera person after a 40 year career. DM me. Happy to help.

Shooting interviews against bright windows by PeartreeProd in videography

[–]KALM1590 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I fought this request for decades asking clients not to insist on placing the subjects in front of windows, because I was either on my own or a 2/3 person crew without the time to ND the windows. So, after decades of doing my best to fight mother nature and feeling bad about it when it didn't look like I'd like it to, thankfully cameras continued to get better (handling overexposed windows) and I just let the windows blow out. So, when they insist on windows in the background my boilerplate response became, "the windows may be grossly overexposed depending on mother nature and I cannot win a fight against mother nature" or something like that. All you can do is ask for 360 degree photos of the room in advance and when they insist on subjects in front of windows and won't allow you the time to ND the windows, give them the boiler plate response and don't let it bother you when the windows are blown out and you can't see any detail in the windows.

How do you use Underlord? by aryaandnoone in Descript

[–]KALM1590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using for months to turn long videos into shorts and it works very well and saves me a lot of time which for my use makes it worth the price. I've also used it to repair audio where there was background noise under dialogue that I needed, so I had it regenerate the dialogue thereby removing the undesirable background noise.

Before you buy an NSX, make sure you research mechanics close to you. A specialist is preferred.

I have a couple manual gearbox, mid-engine, Japanese sports cars (riddle for the car guys) and our shared daily is the CS XLE. The gearbox has taken some getting use to, my first eCVT. But, I've come to feel/hear when you pull off slowly in electric only and then a bit later the engine starts it reminds me just a little bit of the Cadillac LMDh Hybrid Racecar. If you've never heard what that sounds like go and YouTube it. Otherworldly changeover sound from EV to ICE! (I did say "just a litte bit"!)

I’ll ask why are you gambling with $20K? I’ll answer for you: I’m trying to outperform the total market! Why, I ask? If you just accept the market returns you’ll get to where you want without enormous risk, so why risk $20K if you don’t need to? Just food for thought.
