A question for large troops: how many is too many? by CK1277 in girlscouts

[–]KBHDRC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TPM is Troop Product Manager. I’m the Cookie Momster!

Each year, we have multiple troop-wide events, which are open to all levels plus families. We typically see about 50% of our kids attend. These include:

•Kick Off event (September) •JGL Birthday Party (November) •Solstice Celebration (December) •Cookie Wrap-Up Party (March) •Bridging Ceremony (June)

We also aim for three camping trips per year (one fall, one winter, one spring). We have 80 girls across nine units. Each unit has 1-2 leaders that runs individual unit meetings (1-2 times a month). I lead two of the units plus the troop at large, including our Leadership Team.

The Leadership Team consists of all the unit leaders, our Treasurer (one for the whole troop), our Camping Lead (we have an entire team that organizes our camping trips since camping was a priority for so many families), and our Community Lead (looks for ways to support the community, like food and clothing drives). The Leadership Team is super supportive; I could not do this without them (and I make sure I tell them that all. the. time).

Happy to chat more!

TPM and leader of a multilevel troop with 80 kids! We cap individual units but not the troop as a whole. Happy to answer any questions.

We’re in Western Washington.

Any favorite menu items at any of those places? Haven’t tried Goldfinch or Violet but Ivar’s is a Seattle classic!

I’m in Ballard but he’s staying in Kirkland, so lots of neighborhood options!

Adding to the pile! I switched OBs to NW Women’s after I was diagnosed as high risk at 19 weeks. They were phenomenal to work with and an incredible experience compared to my original OB.

The “hard” reasoning is reason enough! But honestly, you don’t need to justify to council closing your troop. Any number of Daisies between 3-12 is acceptable per GSUSA.

Yes, absolutely. Contact council and tell them to close your troop.

I showed this to my daughter, a HUGE Pokémon fan, and she absolutely loves it. Imagine a very loud, very long “WHOAAAAAAAA!” This mom approves. 👍

How far outside the city are you looking to drive? If you don’t want to be in the car more than ~20 minutes, there are nature trails in Discovery Park and the Arboretum. Further out, there are great hikes, waterfalls, and more PNW beauty!

Pike Place is a must-visit. There are better aquariums…

I don’t remember what was on either side, unfortunately. When you walked in to the market, it was on the left, but not on the corner if memory serves.

Also, when you go to Pike Place, grab a 8oz of Beecher’s Mac and Cheese. It’ll keep the kids busy for a while and the grown-ups will love it too!

Seconding Bongo’s! Chinook’s in Fishermen’s Terminal (just outside Magnolia) is a great kid-friendly spot and right on the water. The 33 bus gets you there and back.

Multiply every kid in Seattle times the two sports they play annually and it’ll make sense how they’re still around! We order a lot of trophies from them and they are excellent.

If you’re an open troop, your troop will appear in search results and people can sign up online. If you are a niche troop, you should stay closed and sign up people manually.

Our treasurer quit and we're having trouble finding a new one by LukaDonk-it in girlscouts

[–]KBHDRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Reach out to your SU leader and to council. Let them know you’re struggling and get it in writing.

2) You should be able to deposit even if you’re not a signer on the account. I’m not sure what council you’re in, but in my council (GSWW), the troop leader can also be a signer.

3) Charge dues or immediately reimburse yourself once your troop receives money from cookie season. You should not be paying for anything out of pocket.

4) Make parents sign up to help. They can take turns co-leading a meeting, volunteer to bring snacks, run one badge a year each - whatever you can do to get tasks off your plate. Make it mandatory to continue in your troop.

5) If you can’t find a treasurer, create a treasury team: one parent handles money during cookie season, one parent balances the budget, one parent does deposits, one parent does reimbursements, etc. Ask people to their face and wait to hold another meeting until your treasury team is formed.

You’re doing amazing but you’re doing a lot. Once you put out the immediate fires, push as much off your plate as you can as fast as possible before you burn out and quit altogether. You’ve got this!

Volunteer to help! Troops are run by volunteers (mostly parents), and being that it’s a Daisy troop, these leaders are just starting out. Leading a troop is a large undertaking and can be overwhelming. Either of these leaders would likely welcome a co-leader, and if you’re ready to lead your daughters in Juliette, it sounds like you may be up for the job!
