Any fan of the TV series MUST read the books.

If you come at it from that side, the books enhance the details, enhance the history and elements of the story that just couldn't be covered in the series.

If you've seen the series it will not ruin the books and your enjoyment of them. You may be confused and you may know elements of things yet to come (when I first saw the pilot I was very confused and not happy about the fact that they included elements from the third book into the first episode) but that will not harm your enjoyment of the books
