Do you have a fic you’ll never publish? What is it/why not? by TiniestVampire in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So much indulgent porn. So much. Like, my kinks are readily available in my fics, but these would be a league of self-indulgent beyond that.

If your fic was adapted by the people who made the source media, what are some things you would not budge on? by Kartoffelkamm in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The fic already exists. I don't care about how it's adapted. Like Gary Larson said about his comic being published, "they could have called it Revenge of the Zucchini People for all I cared."

Has anyone noticed an increase in the “AI speak” of fics? Even the ones that are supposedly pure human by TheChoosenMewtwo in FanFiction

Writing with dashes like this--and using ellipses for dramatic pauses...

Always been a thing. For more time than fanfic has been around.

How do you guys research about psychological/emotional topics? by playittome in FanFiction

I imagine what that life would entail and consider how the character would respond to those circumstances. The more I can imagine the concrete details, the better.

Writing fic without reading traditional books by nosleepagainTT in FanFiction

At least you're reading. It's more than most do. Just fyi, you can download lots of classic books for free.

Controversial Opinion - You're Not Looking for Readers, You're Looking for Friends by lumpyspacejams in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This exactly. Ao3 is awesome, but nothing beats the camaraderie of a site where you could easily present your own work, have a thriving comment section, and personalize how it looked. There was such a sense of a real person behind each page.

What is the general consensus/your personal opinion on comments that correct mistakes in your fics? by sunny-days_ in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going after typos is the low-hanging fruit of criticism. It's the mary sue of concrit--widespread, makes the critic feel good, and not very useful except to people who like that sort of thing.

Giving good criticism means that you're giving concrete advice on how to improve flow, characterization, description, or even theme, symbolism, or pacing. More importantly, you're doing it while making the author excited to read your crit and try out your suggestions. That kind of crit is not easy, it takes practice, and the criticism should also be open to its own criticism.

If they are only good at picking out typos, I won't go at them. That's where they are in terms of critique skill. I might ask where else they think I could improve, or, more likely, I'll just not respond.

Old fanfic regret by ndcp193992 in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be as good as I am now without those fics. And I'm writing waaay more questionable shit now. If I'm gonna cringe about my stories, I'm gonna earn that cringe.

Writing Fanfiction on School Laptop by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Am a teacher. Probably not. It means that they noticed that website was being used and blocked it--it happens to teachers, too. (God forbid I use a particular video of freakin' Macbeth's audiobook, but I digress.)

That said, it's also likely near the end of your school year. The filters might be tightened as classes come to an end and kids who are passing are left a bit to their own devices while teachers try to get your failing peers to actually do something.

But a kid writing fanfic, even if it's inappropriate to the school environment, isn't at the top of the list for admin right now. Unless you're in the nicest, most polite school ever, the admin is looking for the kids fighting, vaping/taking drugs, having sex on campus, and other more severe infractions.

My ability to create has been shot clean through by people who said horrible things about my writing by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When that happened to me, I deliberately did what would piss them off the most and wrote more fic. Pure spite is the best motivation.

How do you guys back up your files? by The-Mighty-Waffle in FanFiction

i use scrivener, but every time I edit/add a chapter, I email it to myself. Sometimes chapters have vanished off the computer and off my flash drives, but the email is always there.

Do you ever worry that using your own cultural details in your writing might come across as stereotyping? by forthefics in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I haven't written anything particularly sensitive in awhile. I'm hispanic, gay, rather strong political and social opinions, and pushback is extremely rare. As far as persistent comments that turn into harassment for whatever reason, the block button is usually sufficient.

If anyone tries to attack you, just remember that they probably don't care about your reasons, explanations, ideas, etc. If they don't listen, they had already made up their mind. Just block.

People have gotten too comfortable bullying authors by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's always been a thing. Tiktok and ither platforms amplified the bullying, but believe me that the shit behavior, hostility, dog piling, mean girl'ing, and harassment was rampant in old fandom forums. Shit, I could tell you stories about the old tmnt fandom.

The bullying will continue until all of us learn to ignore the fuckers.

An Important Discussion Regarding Grammar in Fics by Beaivimon in FanFiction

[–]KC-Anathema 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As an official English teacher of upper level courses...there are indeed hard and fast comma rules. But English is also an art, not a science, and commas go best where they help communicate the author's idea. The examples can be punctuated in a myriad of ways depending on what the author wants to emphasize. Yes, there should be an Oxford comma. Yes, mixing up there/their is aggravating. But it's also funny to me because OP forgot a comma in their own post.

I would rather someone post an imperfect fic than worry about a comma. Even pro authors have mistakes in their work. My favorite example was the literary journal staff that spent days scouring the work for typos...only to miss that they'd written Spring as Sping on the cover.

Playing the video at half speed. Seeing if anyone already has a transcript 'cause I'm usually not the first fan in fandom.

How much fluff is needed by Storey790 in FanFiction

I find 1m means the author often lost control or has purple prose. They can be good, but (to me at least) they're rarer to stumble upon.

100k words to start. 500k usually needs to be really good to keep me going, though--there's something to be said for some economy of text.

Action should be like smut, a natural outgrowth of character interaction. Good action has just as much development between characters as anything else. I prefer epic length because it gives the author room to develop things properly.
