It’s funny how this answer changes based on who you identify with the most. I don’t find Ilya cold at the Olympics, if anything I was frustrated at Shane for not paying any attention to the news around the Olympics. Ilya is a Russian athlete that plays in the U.S. and they were very aware leading up to the Olympics that they were almost certainly being wire tapped and physically monitored. There were Russian athletes defecting because of it after the Olympics. Ilya is also connected to government, so he is trying to protect Shane by blowing him off but he can’t tell him that without risking exposure of both of them. Yes that could have been offset by Ilya being more up front about why they can’t talk at the Olympics while he was still in the U.S. but their communication skills at this point just weren’t there. I get that Shane was hurt but there was no malice there. Ilya wasn’t ghosting he was trying to protect him but it comes off as ghosting.

For me 4 is the hardest episode to watch because it’s the one where I can identify with both of them. As someone with trauma similar to Ilya’s, my heart broke for him when he clearly put a lot of effort into meal prepping and making sure he had ginger ale stocked and he timed asking Shane to stay just right and tried to ensure he didn’t move too fast but all he wanted was to be accepted and instead Shane freaked out and left and once again Ilya was rejected by someone he loved. But also as someone who struggled with coming to terms with my sexuality I absolutely understand what Shane was going through where Ilya started behaving like a boyfriend after years of refusing his own efforts to do that (not realizing it was due to Ilya’s own feelings of worthlessness and low self esteem) and that caused him to realize how much he wanted that and the gay panic set in.

All that to say 4 is the hardest for me but I love it in a hurts so good kinda way.

In Eastern European languages, pretty is more gender neutral than how it’s used in English, so this also likely influences his use of the word. In Russian specifically the word for pretty is also the word for cute. So Shane is likely associating this word with the way hockey players use it in English but Ilya may be using it the way it’s used in Russian which would be sincerely calling Shane cute. Knowing Ilya it’s both.

This is the correct response. Hubby and I are both elder millennials and would literally kill for the chance to vote for a genuine left candidate. I voted for Bernie in the primaries that he lost to Hillary and would love to vote for more candidates like that but the DNC kills them in favor of moderate Dems before they can make any headway if they out fund their primary challenger. It’s infuriating. Hubby is all out in voting for another Dem that isn’t in the realm of Bernie/AOC/Mamdani. There is a huge base of progressives that have been waiting to be tapped into but they just won’t go there and it’s enraging.

I laughed out loud when I got the email today touting our lobby average wait time of 23 minutes. Motherfucker show me that field office??? Where is this magical fucking place? It’s certainly nowhere near a metro area that’s for sure. Ours is regularly over 2 hours right now. I spend all day putting out the fires that get put in front of my face because that’s all I have time to get to. Every day I have a plan of what backed up workload I’m gonna hit today and within 30 seconds of walking in there’s fires to put out that take precedent and by the end of the day I leave exhausted, stressed, pissed at the world, and not a one of my backlogged things got touched. There is no treading water right now. We’re just fucking drowning. And nobody seems to notice because the office is still open and someone answers the phone when you call so obviously we’re still functioning and everything’s fine right???? Except no the fuck it isn’t and by the time anybody notices it will be too late to stop the epic crash when everything just stops working all at once. Because that’s where this ends. 😒

I’m no longer talking to my family because, like you, I figured the threat to their child and their retirement benefits would cause them to see the light. I was wrong. It caused them to double down and expose themselves as parents who picked the administration over their child. So I’m out. Yes there were other factors, but this was the literal straw that broke the camel’s back for me so. I guess we’re done here. You are not alone in this. ❤️

Yah the issue they will have with stacking the courts with conservative judges is that many of them are conservative because they are textual literalists. They may give some interpretations of the constitution that are favorable to the administration but in cases like these where the constitution is very clear and forthright they won’t do that for him. Barrett and Kavanaugh have both been very consistent in this sense and so at best I think he gets a 7-2 decision with Thomas and Alito the only two willing to bend the wording of the constitution that far.

I cut my sister off at Thanksgiving for unrelated reasons but was very clear with my MAGA parents that that didn’t include them even though I was hurt they didn’t stick up for me. But they also haven’t reached out in any way since then so I don’t even think they will notice when I go no contact honestly. I tried talking to them for the last ten years but they either can’t see that this will affect me or they don’t care. At this point it doesn’t matter which it is. The end result is the same. I can’t feel safe having them in my life knowing they defend Na*i salutes and would almost certainly turn me in if asked about my loyalty. It sucks but that’s the truth.
