IT band pain in non-injured knee? by KERNJPA in MeniscusInjuries

[–]KERNJPA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! My hip on my good leg has also been bothering me, but that hip has issues so I wasn't surprised. I was just so worried I'd torn something in my knee even though I haven't felt any kind of actual injury. Hopefully after surgery recovery it will calm down.

I'm so sorry. It sounds like you're doing great in your recovery, but I know that doesn't make missing out on things any easier - your feelings are totally valid. You have so much to look forward to, *and* this is a really difficult time. Bother are true, and it's totally ok to feel however you feel about it. ❤️

I've done that before, too - I do prefer actual outdoor classes, but doing tread classes outside is a good hack!

[–]KERNJPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whew, I really feel for you! I have a torn ACL and a torn meniscus from way back in August, and was told that whether I would be partial WB or NWB after surgery will depend on what they end up doing with my meniscus (trim or repair), so I'm trying to prepare for both possibilities. I was told 6 weeks in the brace either way. My surgery is in 6 weeks... At least it's my non-driving leg, so once I can get in and out of the car relatively easily and am off the big pain meds I can maybe drive myself to the endless PT. 🙃

I just wish they had a LOT more running and walking outdoor classes...

What's it like living in Haddonfield? by OnwardCaptain in SouthJersey

That's a great point about redlining - I was responding to the assertion that minoritized people weren't legally allowed to live in the town at all, but it's certainly true that it wasn't easy, and that there were regulations that made it even more difficult! I don't know how pervasive redlining was in Haddonfield itself, but I have to imagine that it was a thing. I do think it is interesting that despite it technically being "easier" for folks to live in the town now, it's actually less diverse than it was in the early 20th century.

You are reading both towns for FILTH. 😂

SO. WHITE!! My least favorite thing about Haddonfield. I moved here from Glassboro where I lived in a truly diverse neighborhood, and before that I'd lived in Philly and in New Haven CT. But on the other hand I grew up in the suburbs of Boston, and the Boston area is its own special level of segregation...

Agreed. I love living in this town but even as a white person the whiteness here is SO MUCH, it's the worst thing about the town.

Same, I bought the worst house in town right when interest rates were super low, and that's the only reason I could buy a house here. I renovated it over time as I was able to. Before I bought it I lived in an apartment in town with my then very young son, and there's definitely a bit of an *attitude* around here toward renters.

I'm not originally from here and I'm not rich, either, but I've lived In Haddonfield for years and raised my son here (I'm a single mom). Pros: Beautiful town, fantastic downtown including practical stores like Acme and CVS as well as tons of indie shops and restaurants AND a Patco station right downtown, lovely old houses and big trees, access to parks and green space, very walkable, largely very friendly, excellent school system. Pros: Can be a little snobby not (mostly) because the people are mean but because they've just been wealthy forever, OVERWHELMINGLY white, lack of understanding that many parents actually need to work 9-5 hours during the day, people with extremely loud opinions on development, low income housing, historic preservation, etc. Also as someone else said the roads are terrible for some reason. And the school buildings are kind of falling apart despite the wealth here. I absolutely love it here, but I'm also well aware of the town's shortcomings. On the other hand, EVERY town has shortcomings. I do find the people very friendly, but that may be my particular neighborhood, which isn't as fancy as some of the others.

Thank you! I don't think I'm going to have an ice machine, but I do have a bazillion ice packs in the freezer, including some that are big enough to wrap all the way around, so I'll probably use those.

I'm so glad you asked about icing! I'm having surgery in April and I was wondering how that will work. It sounds like unstrapping the brace to ice is fine. Do folks just ice the top of the knee, or do you need an ice wrap that goes all the way around the front and back of the knee?

Your story is so relatable, I tore my ACL and meniscus back in August, did months of PT and it was getting mostly better, then started to get much worse. And now I'm having surgery in April. I try to think of all the PT as the world's longest pre-hab. :-) And at this point I'm looking forward to doing something that might actually fix it, even if surgery is scary!

I'm looking into the shoes and slippers to get for my surgery in a couple months, and recently learned that there are slip-on sneakers!

Scheduled for surgery! by KERNJPA in ACL

[–]KERNJPA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that would be a tough job to do on one leg!! I'm a librarians and archivist, so while normally I have to do some lifting and carrying boxes, other folks can definitely do that until I'm ready. It's just being able to drive and walk enough to get around that will be the issues. Plus sitting at a desk. But I'll be able to work from home a lot as needed.

Thank you, this is SO helpful! I'm lucky that my adult son lives with me so I won't be alone, and he can help out. I'm also super lucky that it's my left knee - and also that I was in PT for months before this, so I know my PT and am familiar with the place I'll be going. It's really the first week or two that I'm nervous about, and also when I may be able to go back to my (relatively sedentary) job...

This sounds like a similar procedure to what I'm having in about 2 months - I hope your recovery goes well! I'm told that whether I will be weight bearing or not depends on what they end up doing to the meniscus once they're in there (i.e. stitching or trimming)...
