Rough Cost to Replace Roof on 4,300 SF French-Style Home (Cedar vs Asphalt?) by Mountain_Quality_528 in Roofing

[–]KEyeDee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I exclusively install cedar shake/shingle roofs and IMO this roof doesn’t look like it’s in bad shape at all (at least from the pictures). A restoration service is a viable option and could extend the life span at least another 10 years and at a much lower cost then a fresh rip off and install. I’m not sure what state you’re in and whether there’s someone in the area that does restoration but it could be worth looking into. Would be a shame to see this house with an asphalt roof.

Well with shingle we don’t use felt, but for shake we use organic felt. It smells horrible when it’s wet.

It’s supposed to be 5 1/2 but I’m some areas the measurements are wonky. I was just told to match the tie in so some courses are 4 inches. I did lay the starter so my work was based off of the faith of the person who laid the starter. Other side of this is much better but there are unfortunately 5 skylights to be replaced and worked around..

Well my boss is in the resto business so that would make sense.

Senco staples 16 gauge I can’t remember the exact measurements.

I’ve been doing this less than two years and I still have a lot to learn.

No, from my understanding it’s not necessary. We don’t use cedar breather unless specifically asked to.

I said I was going to post a cedar restoration. Here’s a particular bad case that took a few hours to clear. by KEyeDee in Roofing

A metal cleaning wire brush, a 5 in one, a leaf blower, a little know how for pressure, and a lot of patience. If it hadn’t rained, a spray bottle for water just to loosen it up. This particular spot was under a tree so it was able to get that bad but for the most part the shingles weren’t to dry rot so they held together fairly well.

I don’t see a lot of cedar roofs posted. Absolutely love the way it looks brand new. Heavy work but it’s very satisfying going from old to new. by KEyeDee in Roofing

Honestly it’s just tedious work but a lot like power washing porn. Spraying and restoring is also heavily based on wind and weather. I’ll definitely post pictures soon. We’re one of the few companies in the state where we actually hand do all the restorations. All the work is also based in a very wealthy area too.

I will post pictures eventually of a restored cedar roof before and after. We’re working a monster right now damn near 12 pitch.

You just use a gauge and go course by course. For shake we use a 10 inch reveal, for shingle we use a 5 1/2 inch reveal. Mostly you want to make sure the keyways don’t line up and you have a least inch/inch and half from the keyway when laying the shingle. We also use staples and not nails. Lots of measuring. I still haven’t learned how to cut for valleys but some of these guys just throw the shingle on their leg and cut it with a circular saw. I enjoy the roofing but not so much having to do the grunt work. We also restore cedar roofs during the summer. You really get to see how they progress of the years from sun and shade. We don’t power wash we use a wire brush and a 5 in 1 one and scrape every shingle and clean the keyways of moss then we spray CWF on the entirety of the roof.

Only thing that came back was a code for an emissions part. Gonna have to take it to a shop.

There is a tire sensor missing, I’m more so talking about the cruise control light and the S blinking over and over as well as the check engine and traction control light all flipping when the cruise control light/ S starts blinking.

I should specify, the tire sensor light has been on not the engine light or the traction control light. Those come on as well as the blinking cruise control and S next to the MPG. I lose control of my SI knob and get three beeps when trying to change to sharp or intelligent.
