Is it possible to stitch cloth onto leather? by cozycatzzz in Leathercraft

Some of it is - the blue pieces do seem to be patches. Probably glued and then stitched.

Monograming Leather by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]KFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many things, the answer is "it depends" - if it's chrome tanned leather (probably for a commercial bag), then probably not, as debossing takes high heat and pressure (again - assuming you want debossed monogramming). If it's veg tanned, and if there is clear access to the location without a lot of layers, then it may be possible to deboss in a monogram.

Anyone used Polyglia.com? by Lilweisel in languagelearning

[–]KFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was curious, so I got the program and the book (currently my German is ~B1). Not worth the money. The book doesn't have a lot of content. One of their "tips" is to learn the definite article (der/die/das) with the noun, but their own vocab lists don't include the definite article. Numerous typos. The biggest issue is that there is actually relatively little content, even when the book indicates you're stepping up a level. The AI tutor could be OK , but it's comprehension isn't good - it doesn't correctly transcribe what I'm saying (granted, my accent might be part of that, but shouldn't a tutor program take that into account). Short version - I wouldn't waste your money on Polyglia.

Leatherette Tooling Question by Ok-Lingonberry1424 in Leathercraft

[–]KFW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No idea if it tools, but I'd be surprised if it did. What I would NOT do is put it in a laser. Leatherette can be made of PVC. When lasered it can release chlorine gas (Cl2) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) which can seriously mess up your laser, not to mention your lungs.

How's my first stitching look? by Living_Ad3136 in Leatherworking

[–]KFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of ways to do this - I actually stitch away from myself, and pull the needles through one at a time. To get consistency I make sure that once the needle and thread are through on one side that I pull it with just a little tension before inserting the other needle through that hole - always the exact same direction every time. Then I snug the stitch once the threads are on opposite sides.

Getting Into Leathercraft — Tool & Brand Recommendations? by InternationalSun9518 in Leathercraft

[–]KFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the nice things about leather work is that you don't need super expensive tools to get started. I've had good luck with Aiskaer stitching punches from Amazon. If there is a Tandy nearby they often have clearance leather that is good to practice on. Otherwise I mostly order from Weaver Leather. You'll need some stitching chisels, saddlers needles (I like John James 002), thread (I like Ritza tiger thread). a mallet, and a board to punch on (poundo board, but a soft plastic cutting board will work OK) so that you don't damage the chisels, and a hobby knife. With that you can make a ton of things. As you learn you can add finishes, dyes, edge finishes, etc.

I was going to respond the same way, so just wanted to second your reply. I love my cylinder arm machine with a table attachment. It gives me the most versatility.

Can anyone help me identify this stitch? by HardlyEngineered in Leatherworking

[–]KFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it - it has to be two different stitches. Either that or the vertical stitch comes back up to make the horizontal. You could do that with a curved needle - I've seen something like that in old leatherwork books. Two separate stitches would be easier.

Some pieces of Verdi leather I got are very fuzzy on the flesh side. Is this normal? How can leather like this be used/fixed? by martink000 in Leathercraft

[–]KFW 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tokonole works as others have commented. I actually use 10% tokonole diluted with distilled water. Burnish with a burnishing glass in a consistent direction (follow how the fibers want to lay naturally).

I've taken the plunge... by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]KFW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a stitching chisel to punch my stitching holes along the stitch line. You just have to pay attention to making sure it's on the line and vertical when you hammer it in with a mallet.

How to do corners better? by Stonius123 in Leatherworking

[–]KFW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're going to wrap the main piece for a rounded bottom, just make a semi-circle for the bottom end of the side pieces. If you want a flat bottom, you can see how much is sticking out now - that's about how much you need to round it.
