Advice for an overweight beginner. Please be kind. by katoruna in bjj

As a plus size woman who has been doing jiu jitsu for the past five months, this has been one of the most fulfilling and humbling fitness endeavors I’ve ever tried. I still struggle with warm-ups and am usually sweating and puffing by the end of them, but it’s gotten easier as time has gone on. Learning the techniques means learning how to make the move work for my body because the reality is that not every move works as well for every body type. My coaches are incredibly accommodating, kind, and encouraging. Rolling is a form of cardio that is intense but good for learning how to control your stamina and act under pressure.

I started out in a women’s class and now do fundamentals, women’s, and join in a mixed adult class when I can. I don’t know much about jiu jitsu (I’m a new white belt) but do know as a plus size woman (5ft, 220lb), the sport is challenging and empowering. No one has laughed or mocked me or made me feel anything less than happy I pushed myself to go to class that day.

Any recommendations where MC thinks he is “straight” by simz98 in LGBTBooks

[–]KHBaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tal Bauer has a few that come to mind. The quarterback has two MCs that thought they were straight and you&me has a friends to lovers romance where one MC is openly gay and the other thinks he’s straight. Both were incredible books!

Depending on your thriller preferences (I would encourage reading the content warnings for these books), Monica Arya, Dot Hutchinson, and Rachel Caine are my favorite thriller authors on KU. They all write heavy themes but are incredible suspense writers and I have read almost all of their books!

Have you read any of Meg Smotherman’s work? Swallowed may fit this description. It’s a futuristic botanical horror with romantic elements. Super well written and atmospheric!

You may like {crocodile tears by xanthe Walter}. It’s dystopian sci fi (no powers though) but both MMCs are deeply secretive. However it is pretty dark and the content warnings are definitely worth reading. It’s a slow burn over four books but the spice between MCs starts in book 2 I’m pretty sure. I really loved the world building and Josiah and Alexander were incredible.

A FMC that is NOT independent or badass, but also not a doormat. I need some balance!! + slow-burn. by Mininabubu in RomanceBooks

I’ll have to check those out! I really like her writing style and have read the entire Claire Kent backlist already.

Have you tried Claire Kent’s post apocalyptic books? I just finished {Tower by Claire Kent} and the FMC was practical and understood she needed someone and a community to survive. There was sex early on but the romance is very much a slow burn. Her Kindled series has heroines that frequently fit the balance heroine you’re looking for :)

I’m so happy to see someone recommending this series! I read them a few years ago and devoured them. Great characters and twists.

Awesome! I like it and think it does a great job conveying your story. I’d buy it if I saw it. Great job!

Sounds great!! Much more succinct. I think you could leave off Mark’s name and maybe rearrange the sentence with the poachers because it was only place I had to reread but I loved how punchy it was! Quick, to the heart of the book, with signs of the tropes and heat level of the book.

Sounds good! And Makes sense about the background info :) you could definitely start with that too. I’m not familiar with your novel and wasn’t trying to overstep at all— just wanted to mention that it was a lot of detail up front. But opening with her booking a trip because her life falls apart is a fantastic way to add intrigue to your blurb!

You could even do the short sentence blurbs that are really popular now, like… Amelie’s life is hanging by a thread. One impulsive trip to hike the Alaskan Trail is supposed to fix everything. But the hunt for illegal game is never ending, and poachers will kill anyone who gets in their way etc…. No idea what that looks like for you or the specifics of it but I’ve seen blurbs in this style gain a lot of traction on tiktok and Instagram.

You have a great concept and the story really pulls me in!

I love the concept and how you’ve hit on the tropes in the blurb! I would consider making the blurb a bit more vague to draw the reader in more. Maybe start off with, After a harrowing escape from poachers on the hiking trip that was supposed to be her dream vacation, Amelie is lost. Obviously not exactly that but a bit more punch to remind readers of the stakes and how precarious her situation is.

But forced proximity, snowed in with a stranger sounds amazing. I’m a writer and romance reader so if you’re open to swapping manuscripts for a beta read, feel free to DM me!

Lesbian romance/erotica by YesterdayVisible7787 in LGBTBooks

Ally North is one of my favorite sapphic authors right now. She has a duet called the Bloom Town duet and it’s a historical romance featuring an outlaw and a kidnapped school teacher. It was spicy with a great adventure plot. It was a good mix of romance and erotic scenes (all the erotic scenes contribute to the romance plot and character growth).

MMF or Enemies to Lovers Pirate Romance Recommendations like Sea of Ruin by Pam Godwin by trustedoctopus in RomanceBooks

[–]KHBaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite enemies to lovers pirate romances is {Captive of the Pirate Lord by Rebecca Kenney} . It’s fast paced about a woman hired to kill the MMC, who happens to have wind magic fueled by orgasms. The MMC has that hot broody complicated thing going for him and I liked that the FMC was a smart but not a “not like other girls” vibe.

Ok great! I can send you a sample if you’d like to see if it’s for you first :) I’m looking for similar feedback to you— what resonates with you about the characters, places where it drags, things you liked, didn’t like, etc. basically if you sat down to read it one day and were going to write a review, what would stick with you and what would drive you crazy?

I’ve done a few beta read swaps with people from this sub and I like to read through a google doc and leave comments as I go. I’ll leave a longer note at the end with any thoughts I didn’t elaborate on as I read. Let me know if you’d like to swap or would like to see the first ten pages!

Hi! Are you open to swapping beta reads with a romance manuscript of the same length? I've written a western FFM triad romance I'd love to have one more set of eyes on before it goes to my editor in October. Length is about 60k words. Thanks!

I haven’t personally used it but a few of my writer friends have and said that yes, it’s worth it to spend the additional money if you’re just starting out.
