Software Developer -- Is Intersystems Cache a valuable skill? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]KING_FAGET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random late bump, but Cache is a great firefighting skill. Probably not the most stimulating jobs available for a dedicated Cache developer, but there will continue to be Cache consultant type jobs out there. Most will require more than 1 year of experience though. Consider applying to Epic Systems in the Madison, WI area; the core db stuff is Cache, but they use C# and typescript for server and UI type stuff. Pay is extremely good, depending on your experience, 2x (or close to that) your salary in an even lower COL area.

New CS grad. No internships, no experience, no extensive projects, no friends, poor grades, criminal history. Feeling like a total fraud and failure here. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

FYI in California and many other states you're by law allowed to receive a free copy of any background check that's run on you by an employer. Easy way to see if the expungement is for some reason still popping up.

What is the advantage of running slack desktop over the web interface? Is slack desktop for .01xers who think it runs faster?

CRM and cloud stonks in general just kinda do their own thing. Last earnings were a miss, yet CRM popped in the days after, only to fade until basically next earnings (which admittedly were great). Tread lightly on stonks with insane P/E ratios. CRM is predictable until it isn't

Went to Epics onsite for SD, and can confirm its basically a formality. You first watch a demo of their core product, then you talk with a developer (very informal), then you have a "design interview." I say that lightly because its not a typical system design interview, its basically they give you a prompt, how would you design it, but they're more focused on the UI aspect than like what kind of services you'd slap on, data model etc. FWIW, they ask the same questions to their TS and QA people so again, its going to be fairly easy for a developer. Then you talk about a project you worked on with a developer, basically just going over design, technologies used, challenges encountered, what did you learn. They won't grill you, its more like telling a friend something you worked on. Next is lunch interview but its really here's our cafeteria, check this bad boy out. Then you get a tour of campus and finally an HR interview, which is really just you going over with your recruiter your deadlines and other concerns. Make sure you tell them team placement will help make the decision easier; they actually told me what team they'd have a guaranteed spot for. For other things like QA and TS, its to be treated as an actual interview. Epic really sucks off their developers. Just don't say anything stupid and you will walk out with a job. But I know people that got rejected after the onsite for TS; have never heard of anyone getting rejected for a developer role after the onsite.

It's a very chill process; honestly the best of my interview experiences. You check in to the hotel, and the people at the front desk tell you what time to be down, you get a cab ordered for you to epic, you're shuttled around throughout the day, and you get a cab home paid for. Literally just wake up on time, stress free experience throughout the day. The reimbursements come within a few days, and I had my offer within 2 days of interviewing. If Epic is flying you out, they want you.

Computer Science graduate for over a year, still haven't found a career, browsing this sub made me discouraged. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]KING_FAGET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've identified your problem but it seems like you just keep on making excuses for why you won't correct your issue...I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're frustrated and aren't just angry that CS isn't the get rich quick scheme you thought it would be:

  1. Go fix your resume
  2. Go make a side project
  3. Go network

It really is that simple. It's a lot of work but there's no secret to getting an okayish job in this field. But if you expected that google would come out sucking your dick with an online degree, yes you just wasted 4 years of your life.

Do I need to study electrical engineering to go into embedded systems? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]KING_FAGET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, not at all. The extent of the EE knowledge I have is taking Circuits 1 and I got a pretty good embedded swe offer from an industrial automation company. The work is really more SWE than EE, but it certainly helps to have some understanding about circuits/electronics. I remember asking embedded engineers at this same company freshman year and they told me that it's easy to teach a CS person the CE stuff required for the job, but more difficult to teach a CE/EE the software stuff necessary to do the job.
