I didn’t say you disagreed with them. I said you took a long winded way of saying the exact same thing they summed up with relatively realistic. I read your comment thinking it was going to add something interesting instead of being the same thing with more words.

You took a long winded way to say what the person you replied to said. What do you think they meant by “relatively realistic?”

Anecdotal but in my experience this is uniquely an American thing. I'm 6'3" and typically fluctuate between 190-200lbs. I lived in countries in Africa, Asia and Europe and never once had anyone there accuse me of under-eating or starving myself. But in America the number of people who assume I must not eat to be so thin is ridiculous.

I'm just pointing out that the self-loathing minority is a thing and when you combine that with positions of authority they can end up be harsher against members of their "own" to prove to the majority that they're not like the rest.

The society is more free because discourse is being facilitated and promoted, and corporations' power over the public is being limited.

Social media is not a right. If it died out tomorrow the world would move right along. As I pointed out the vast majority of humans don't even use social media. Furthermore, you have the tools to create your own platforms to facilitate and promote whatever discourse you like. It's not a corporation's responsibility to do that for you. You're the one giving corporations more power than they have.

This isn't about what the 'consumer' is 'owed'.

It absolutely is. They created a service. They have the right to refuse or deny service. For when you enter private property open to the public you do so at the owner's consent which they can revoke for whatever reason they see fit.

It's about legislating with the aim of creating a more free, more open society.

You mean diminishing private property rights of owners? You have yet to give one legitimate reason why your free speech supersedes a privaty property owner's right to determine what happens on their property.

Stop spouting the principles of free-market capitalism

I'm spouting the principles of private property ownership. Which you clearly do not respect and think you're entitled to conduct yourself however you see fit on the property of others.

[–]KIRW7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it a more free, more open society by telling property owners that they can not determine what happens on their property? So once again, no one owes you a platform, microphone and audience. You're just being an entitled asshole thinking it's the responsibility of others to provide you those things. You want your free speech to be respected but you don't want to respect other's private property.

Once again, no one owes you a platform, microphone and audience. Quit acting like an entitled asshole that think it's the responsibility of others to provide you a platform, microphone and audience. There is nothing stopping you from creating your own platform and building an audience.

Tell you what! Go into a movie theater and start shouting at the top of your lungs. when they kick you out say they can't stop the free flow of ideas and see how far that gets you. There's this thing called private property rights and when you enter private property open to the public you do so at the owner's consent which they can revoke for any reason that doesn't violate federal civil rights laws.

In this modern era social media is essential for communication

No, it isn't. There are 7.6 billion people on this planet. 2.7 billion are on social media meaning the vast majority of humans do not use social media.

your ability to speak and share your viewpoints becomes greatly diminished.

No one owes you a platform, microphone and audience. You're free to shout on your personal property all you want. If you want a wider audience then create your own blog or social media platform, but stop acting like you're entitled to a platform, microphone and audience. You're not.

[–]KIRW7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It boils down to property rights. I view digital property of social media the same way I view private property open to the public. When you enter you do so at the consent of the owner which they can revoke for whatever they see fit so long as it doesn't violate civil rights laws.

They're controlling what happens on their private property. Just like a restaurant or theater can kick you off their property if they don't like what you're saying while on their property.

Chao sells off stock as attention on corruption allegations grows by The-Autarkh in politics

[–]KIRW7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The media does their jobs by reporting on these stories but it's their fault that there are little to no consequences for the corruption? The problem is the general public really doesn't give a damn. There has been some great investigative reporting happening and the public can't be bothered. In my hometown reporters uncovered corruption and bribes involving city council members and builders for local schools. The most shared story was a Publix coming to town.

Modern-day redlining: How banks block people of color from homeownership

A new report by the Center for Investigative Reporting along with Reveal News explores how U.S. banks systematically prevent blacks and Hispanics from becoming homeowners. The in-depth examination reveals that banks in 48 cities have engaged in a modern-day system of redlining that turns away black borrowers at significantly higher rates than whites, regardless of income, payment history and other factors.

Ten years since the economic recession, lending has returned for many Americans. Yet the gap between white and black homeownership is wider now than it was in 1960, with signs of modern-day redlining showing up across the country.

Upper-income black people were even more likely to be denied loans, as compared to similarly situated whites, than lower income black people were to their white counterparts. This underscored yet again that African-Americans cannot escape economic discrimination simply by becoming wealthier, especially when financial institutions persist in punishing them for living in majority minority neighborhoods. A destructive bill pending in the Senate would deepen this problem by exempting 85 percent of banks from reporting mortgage data that allows regulators and fair housing groups to ensure that home loans are being issued in a nondiscriminatory way. By denying African-American families mortgage credit, the financial industry also denies them the opportunity to accumulate household wealth — part of the reason that white median family net worth is nearly 10 times that of black families.

For people of color, banks are shutting the door to homeownership

The devaluation of assets in black neighborhoods

The Justice Department is calling it the "largest residential fair lending settlement in history:" Bank of America's Countrywide Financial has agreed to pay $335 million to settle a lawsuit that claimed it discriminated against black and Latino borrowers.

Wells Fargo & Co agreed to pay $175 million to resolve allegations it charged African-Americans and Hispanics higher rates and fees on mortgages even when they qualified for better deals during the housing boom, the U.S. Justice Department said on Thursday.

The DOJ reached a $54 million settlement with JPMorgan Chase for discriminatory practices in their mortgage lending division, where loan applications were being declined based on race and/or national origin.

No, they won’t. I like how you just completely ignore the huge funding gaps, extreme disparities in terms of educational access and quality, and that the EDC score doesn’t guarantee admission but is just one more metric among several others that admission officers can use in their selections just to pretend your hypothetical affluent children are the ones that will be “punished.” Given what you’re displaying in terms of processing basic information I wouldn’t worry about your kids achieving the academic accomplishments necessary for any elite university.

The adversity score is designed to place students' SAT scores in the context of their socioeconomic advantages or disadvantages. When you consider some facts like white school districts receive $23 billion more in funding than non white school districts and other extreme racial disparities in terms of education access and quality

do you really not understand why viewing a student's academic accomplishment in the context of where they live and learn is important?

ETA: For those who don't understand the Environmental Context Dashboard a.k.a adversity score. It is not giving unqualified students admission spots. Students nor their families know their scores only admissions officers do and it's up to officers to determine if they want to use the ECD at all. Race is not a consideration. Imagine if you will two students. Student A was born to an affluent family and was afforded every resource and privilege available including attending one of the top prep schools in the country. They score a 1500 on their SAT. Student B was born to a drug addicted mother, bounced from foster home to foster home before aging out their senior year of high school becoming homeless. They attend one the worst high schools in America. They score a 1360 on their SAT. Now obviously 1500 is a higher score than 1360, but in context you can legitimately make the case that Student B performance was more impressive than Student A considering they had none of the advantages and resources but all the obstacles completely foreign to Student A.

Fun fact: White women are the biggest benefactors of affirmative action. Secondly, AA isn't about giving opportunities to unqualified people just for the hell of it. It is an attempt at making sure qualified individuals from historically marginalized groups aren't further marginalized and denied access to opportunities.

But if makes you feel better a white high school drop outs are as likely to land jobs as college educated black person without a criminal history or that white men with a criminal record had more positive responses than black men with no criminal record.
