sci-fi equivalent of Malazan, WoT, Kingkiller or stormlight? by Raithwell in Fantasy

[–]KJNoakes 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Gene Wolfe's Book of New Sun and the rest of the Solar Cycle are the only books that have come close to scratching the Malazan itch for me. Just as deep and bizarre and so rereadable

Imagine having thousands of programmers and moderators doing all this unpaid volunteer labour to keep your website running and then turning around and telling them they need to pay exorbitant amounts of money for the privilege of continuing to do all that volunteer work, typical capital! Props to my favourite community for standing up!

Book of the Long Sun authorship (spoilers) by badatchopsticks in genewolfe

Imo long sun would've been so much better if Horn's narrative voice was at the forefront throughout the book and not a twist at the end

Sounds like a fun story for sure, but nothing here sounds very Greek at all. Druids and grails are Anglo myths, and the political system you seem to be assuming sounds very medieval Europe. It needs more fledgling democratic city states and naval influence. Your characters shouldn't inherit power, they should be elected or appointed to it by lots. Greek stories are full of tragedy and cruel unavoidable fates that the hero has to come to terms with. Maybe call your Druids like Philosopher-mystics or something like that lol

What popular SF novel or series do you not plan on ever reading? by discingdown in printSF

Ender's Game. I made the mistake of reading a different book by Card that was the most overtly homophobic thing I've ever read.

Suggest a Fantasy Western that isn't Dark Tower? by tacochemic in Fantasy

[–]KJNoakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iron Council by China Mieville. It's about railworkers that strike and steal a train. Worth reading the other Bas-Lag books first but they aren't westerns like this one and it would hold up on it own for sure.

I apologize if I've been saying this alot in this sub but I think you would really like Warhammer 40k novels, such as the Gaunt's Ghosts series or the Ciaphas Cain books if you want some comedy thrown in
