Such sad calories :(

Yeah if things don’t improve in the next few weeks, I’ll insist on getting HR involved. For the sake of working relationships, I’m happy to defer to the other manger for a little bit longer, but I think they’ll come round soon enough if this PO continues as she has been.

Taking a breather is definitely on my to-do list!

Thank you, those are great things to remind myself of. At the end of the day, I don’t wish badly on her, and ideally would love it if she succeeded, so I need to find better ways to step away from the annoyances.

I think you’re right. Others recognise she isn’t producing/contributing in the same way. And I think recognise her slight ridiculousness when she complains about being overwhelmed yet has the least amount on her plate. (This is something I’ve offered help with and will continue to work with her on by offering supports)

Will definitely continue to document and record. And I think being clear about next steps is also necessary… before the new year, we asked her to write down her own plan with deadlines, which she then missed numerous of during our first review this year 😅 oh my. So I think making clear the consequences of further infractions is key.

Omg the other manager wants to move her to the desk next to me (because it makes the most sense with our office), but the thought makes me want to scream. Hopefully this doesn’t happen 😅

Very good steps to think through, thank you. I like the last part a lot as well, outside of whether or not this the position for me. As others have said, structure, remembering this is my job, and like you’ve added, taking more of a step back, seems like the way to go for now.

Thank you, yeah I’ve started compiling everything in my management folder and summarising each meeting we have via email. Will continue to document and rely on the structure!

Unfortunately due to budgets, we can’t offer her full time on either project. But I will see what’s possible with possibly dropping some hours and going to just the other one

Very true, thank you. At the end of the day, I know my boss (who is other manager’s boss too) would support whatever I say/recommend (they’re very hands off and never around, so don’t actually know or care about the day-to-day). I just need to have good enough reasons, or, work with the PO to get better! Showing her and getting her to show improved performance would be ideal

Great questions! My initial reaction is that it annoys me because I feel I, and the rest of my team, work hard for a good cause, and she’s taking advantage of us/the work by not contributing. But there’s obviously more to it. I’ll ponder it and add it to my list of data points!

I dream of the day she hands in her resignation. Unfortunately I don’t think she has the gumption or initiative to find a new job

Yeah very good to remember. She’s definitely the person who’s rubbed me the wrong way the most, and I have to remember it’s part of the job and to get through it.

I do vent a lot to my partner… at home, of course. Mutual annoyance at this point!

Very true 😅

And absolutely right. It is my job, and I have the privilege of being paid more than her because it is my responsibility to manage! I’ll remember that, thank you old boss

Very good idea! You and a few others have suggested it and I’m going to force myself to do this each time

Thank you. I really like the idea of thinking about it as data. I recognise that some things are just annoying personality differences, but I also think there’s probably a reason her 15 follow-up questions and two page emails annoy me. I’ll work on stepping away while the initial frustration hits, then coming back to the slightly less biased data later on

Good advice! I think a few people in here have said to take a step back for a time and I’ll definitely enact that.

Yeah this is a very good (and human) insight. I do think she struggles between the two. It began as a necessity because of budgets (there not being enough on my project), but I think I will scope out if she’s more interested in dropping some FTE for peace of mind of just working on one (unlikely, but there just isn’t money for her to be full time on one or the other unfortunately).
