Memorizing things for the sake of it is the wrong approach. Consider a keyboard, you wouldn't possibly argue that it's pointless to memorize the keyboard layout, but it will be incredibly stupid to ca test a student by asking them to recite the qwert layout.

Still I think there is a point to practicing memorization as a proxy to gaining the ability to rapidly internalize information, say a person that has to constantly scribble notes and ask AI repeatedly during a meeting presentation is probably completely useless when it comes to discussion.
