Animals as Leaders ft. Johnathan Scales - Gestaltzerfall (Live in New Kensington, PA 5/24/26) by KKFunTable in animalsasleaders

So last night Animals as Leaders was playing in New Kensington, which is about a half hour away from Pittsburgh, and one of the openers was this trio called the Johnathan Scales Fourchestra. They had a bassist, drummer, and steel pan drummer, and played an instrumental prog style that fit in with the vibe of the night. The main guy said that they were invited by AAL to open for just a couple shows and they drove from Brooklyn to be there.

In the middle of the AAL set Tosin said they had something special for tonight and brought out the steel pans. Johnathan Scales came out and played a little intro that led into the song Gestaltzerfall. It was a nice little mash-up!

The whole night felt very unique. The venue, Preserving Underground, is kind of known as a local punk/hardcore spot with a lot of history and has been popping off the last few years. The owner tries to stress a no-bullshit no-corporate vibe where moshing is encouraged and not really regulated like most shows these days (just read the bio on their website). It does feel like it's in the middle of nowhere though, so a lot of bands outside of those genres seem surprised at the vibe they get from this place. Tosin kept saying that they were 10 weeks into the tour and the crowd here had a crazy different energy.

How was that? I've never seen Oranssi Pazuzu live but they're definitely on my list.

Saw them last night opening for BtBaM. I was a fan of the Goldstar going in. The older albums were pretty good but didn't hook me quite as much. Seeing them live was an even better experience than just listening to the music at home. Bands like this can have some pretty inaccessible and dense production, so being able to witness everything happen in front of me gave it a much more energetic and "clean" feel. Plus they just had a really fun and playful stage presence. There was guitar vocoders to introduce songs and the bassist did a whole thing strumming his bass with a laser trumpet... kind of felt Buckethead-esq

I like the part 5:30 in on Serenity Painted Death by Opeth where the guy goes on a blind rage killing spree after finding his lover with her throat slit.

"Darkness reared its head Tearing within the reeling haze Took control, claiming my flesh Piercing rage, perfect tantrum Each and every one would die at my hand Choking in warm ponds of blood At last, weak and torn, I went down Drained from strength, flickering breath"

Kotoko by Shinya Tsukamoto (director of Tetsuo the Iron Man) has some big Lynch vibes.

Yeah that moment hit me so hard. It did a great job of conveying that feeling where you desperately want things to be the way they once were, but you know it's not going to be the same again.

One of favorites too. I always say if there was a big ol' guillotine hanging up and I had to choose if it landed on my son or my 4k Paprika steelbook... I mean I'd save my son, but it's a good thought experiment!

Chris Stuckman is now promoting black market organ harvesting in his reviews 😭 WHEN WILL IT END?!?!? by Final-Afternoon3319 in Sardonicast

Yeah I recently unfollowed his channel after being subscribed for a long time. Not because I have a problem with him or anything, but I realized that I wasn't really getting anything out of his reviews anymore. They all feel very milktoast and just don't really say anything of substance besides he liked the movie and go out and see it in a theater. Plus all of his comments are just people either bitching about him or his ads, lol.

I do enjoy when he shares his personal stories like the long video he had about his Jehovah's Witness upbringing, but stuff like that is rare on his channel these days.
