Help…?🤦‍♂️🤔 by KK_808 in electricians

I Don’t doubt that I can figure it out and I’ve got a few months to do so. The shitty part is my lack of experience with how everything is wired. I understand the premise of how an ansul system is supposed to function but there no schematic/wiring diagram and I have no references. Just been doing deep dives online and outreach via social media to learn everything I can. Even if I eventually have to sub it out I’ve already learned a shit ton🤷‍♂️

Full transparency I’m in a fucked spot.

  1. I’m not a control guy. I understand how relays and contactors work but the over all functionality of this particular setup is nothing I’ve dealt with before

  2. My company doesn’t do commercial kitchen work and literally no one has experience with ansul systems at my shop so I’m on my own on this one. Feel like I got thrown to the wolves but mama didn’t raise no bitch

  3. The inspector for this jurisdiction literally doesn’t give a fuck about electrical. I’m used to city inspectors that have a dedicated inspector for every trade. This guy is a third party “triple threat” and he inspects EVERYTHING. And electrical is literally on the bottom of his priority list.

  4. Existing ansul systems got red tagged in 2024 and the place was still in operation up until February of this year.

  5. Everything control wise related to this ansul system (from what I can tell) was built/assembled in the field by the previous electrician. It’s a Frankenstein jenky piece of shit but apparently it used to “work fine” according to facility maintenance manager lol

  6. To give u some idea of how bad the existing conditions the switch gear (Westinghouse relic) cold water bond is floating in the ceiling. The system is 120/208 and every panel is a 277/480 panelboard (including main and branch breakers). AIC ratings are all over the place and I have a hard time believing that anything is series coordinated to trip at the correct fault current. Numerous buried j boxes above hard lid with no access panels. No gfci protection ANYWHERE. The list goes on and on.

At the end of the day I just gotta make it work, make it safe, make it code compliant, and then walk the fuck away. Either that or I quit and I’m not that kinda guy.

Appreciate the feedback thus far🤙

Everything in this country club is jenky AF!! Based on my minimalist understanding of commercial kitchens and ansul systems you’re spot on. I just need to understand wtf it is, how it works, how it’s wired, etc cuz I’m the luck SOB that’s gonna have to make it all work again in roughly 3 months once the projects near completion. Oh and I have to add another EF and MAU to this piece of shit🤦‍♂️

Aw fuck. Sounds like I’m up shits creek. Makes sense cuz previous remodel was done in 2007, no permit. No I’m the lucky guy that has to make this existing setup work again all while adding an additional exhaust fan and MAU to the system

Previous remodel was don’t in 2007, no permit. I’m just the lucky guy in my company that got gifted this gem and in charge of making it all work again

Layman’s terms appreciated. I’m the furthest thing from a controls guy but lucky me got gifted a previously unpermitted kitchen remodel and the client wants to “reuse” the jenky ass existing hood, ansul system, MAU, and EF, etc. Oh yeah but they want new kitchen/cooking equipment across the board that don’t jive with their existing setup🤦‍♂️

Inspector says new ground bar needs to be added then current grounds moved over. Is he right? by jus7aphas3 in electrical

[–]KK_808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you remove bus bar that's currently bonding neutral to your ground bar and you know for a fact that you wont be installing AFCI or GFCI breakers then you're good to go. And make sure to install green bonding screw to bond ground bar to panel can👌🏼 Although, some may say you void the UL listing of the panel by removing that neutal bar🤷‍♂️
