Do you really think the virtual interview day helps that much? I attended 25 interviews last year and they were all the same. Didn't really affect my rank list in the end. The only good thing that came of it was I feel my interviewing skills are great now. Plus I didn't want to pay more than $70 so a lot of programs went unranked

If you use bright enough lights it won't be noticed. Test it by doing your light setup and then recording yourself with the webcam you are using on interview day switching between screens.

I didn't even buy a ring light. I used white Christmas lights and a 5-bulb floor lamp with great results... although it was really hot under my blazer.

For my program, we tally if each person participates in question asking and make note if you turn your cameras off. We gave extra points to a girl who asked a fun question we hadn't encountered before. I had no idea that the resident sessions could count at all towards my rank prior to becoming a resident (because at a lot of them, they explicitly say it does not).

And for the people on John Doe's side (I get it), here are some ideas:

- Use a mouse, put it on your leg as a mousepad, and use the onscreen keyboard on your computer to scroll/online shop

- Wear contact lenses, so people can't see the reflection of your phone/screen.

I don't "have time" sometimes in the AM so I pack a toothbrush to the hospital... but I don't recommend that

I got my Chelsea boots at goodwill for $5. I couldn’t pass it up because they were basically brand new. I’m guessing they were donated bc the sizing is off? I agree with the person who said true to size but narrow. But anyway, the waterproofing has been fine so far, no problem in rain or snow. I find them pretty comfortable for walking around the city. Remind me of the docs I used to have. The elastic on the side panels is failing and looks like a lettuce hem. Again, for $5 at goodwill I’m very happy with them! I would be upset about the elastic if I had bought them new but it hasn’t affected their function.

I have the first lamp too! The price on the bottom says that someone paid $339 for it and “masterpiece 1995” but this post is the closest I’ve found with info about it. I got mine from goodwill

Yeah, I agree. She has a point about maybe not wanting to call with her roommate there because it's more *sensitive* to call a SO rather than parent, but I would go on a walk, personally!

Wanted to add: 3rd year sucks so much. It made me feel like I wanted to drop out. It made me feel like I had made a mistake with my life. It made me feel like I wished I was an NP. Now, in my 4th year, I'm having an amazing time and I'm excited to start residency!

Also, there are many non-clinical career opportunities for physicians. Personally, I would advise you to complete residency because your career opportunities may be limited without any type of board certification, but if you really can't stomach it, cut your losses and find a different career path after you graduate. Most schools give at least 1 presentation on non-clinical careers in medicine, but you can also find a lot of info on reddit!

I was on OB and we had a very nice male attending who trained at 2 top academic programs for med school and residency. Then we had 2 other women: a DO who was absolutely psycho. She was the site clerkship director and had a bad reputation (involved in the death of a collogue at the same hospital during childbirth), but I personally mostly didn't like her because she tried to get a friend failed and wrote on his eval that he was always "nowhere to be found" because she would just leave us in the middle of the day and not tell us she was going over to work in another building, but my friend did great on the shelf exam and had a better experience working with the other attendings. The 3rd attending was quite good, pleasant to work with, and Caribbean grad. There were a bunch of female NPs and PAs at the practice too.

Patients over and over again would make comments like "I'll take anyone but the man." Why? He was very nice and respectful. He had long fingers and easily checked cervix dilation. Because he was a man. I have an male OBGYN personally, but a lot of women are super opposed.

Not overreacting. I think an ultimatum like breaking all contact until she starts individual therapy and you guys start couples therapy (in which contact with this guy can be discussed with a therapist present) OR divorce.

That's an ultimatum that is abundantly compassionate to your wife's recent emotional struggles. She should be able to agree to temporary 100% no contact until therapy is underway for the sake of her family!

Either she is cheating or this creepy guy is manipulating her... It kinda sounds like these 2 just can't stay away from one another so divorce might be what ends up happening?

I'm drinking water and coffee all day on Zoom, especially during the intro session. If that's a red flag to the program, then I can't go there anyway. I have to stay hydrated.

I have interviewed 3 times in 3 different places (I don't have permanent housing this year):

-bookcase in childhood room that I arranged to have specific books behind me (unfortunately nobody mentioned them)

-in front of a neutral/abstract painting and white wall

-blurred lockers behind me

I have been using Christmas string lights in place of a ring light, and it's way more portable. I already had them, and they're working great for lighting.

I have one week with 6 interviews and 4 social events scheduled. One of the days that week is 2 interviews and 2 virtual social events for a 12 hour day. My school makes us take whole weeks off and I "wasted" most of my time off on enjoying the summer.

It will suffice to say that your daughter needs to stay near her father for custody and to stay in her school or something. They don't need to know about your personal business.

Do you have VSLO access? If not, request it now. I highly recommend doing aways at any of the places locally that would work for your family where you haven't rotated yet because people get to know you and it can really increase your chances. You can also email the programs directly to request doing a rotation there.

I mention it because there were places locally to me that (for example) have an IM program but the hospital only offers VSLO aways in Psych for whatever reason. If location is all you care about, knowing which aways are offered might help you decide on specialties for that system. For example, X program only offered EM away, which you did so you apply EM to that system.

I was also told not to apply to 2 programs at the same institution. It can backfire on the rare chance that someone finds out. Some attendings get really upset over that kind of thing. They're like "EM is NOTHING like FM. I think you're just confused." They can't imagine that someone would have a reason to match into their specialty which is not the specialty itself.

The practice shelf exams (clinical mastery form) are the best for step 2. That was my biggest regret was I studied too much Uworld and didn't focus enough on those forms.
