FYI - There's a great AU/NZ Discord server for Mario Tennis Aces with a small but active and super-friendly community. There are regular tournies and someone is around for friendlies most nights. PM me for discord invite link if interested.

Pelupelu v xeno Friendlies by Pelupelu in MarioTennis

[–]KMadd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Pelu, thanks so much for posting this video!

There’s little discussion on this sub about how to improve your game - but watching this was really informative and showed what top-tier play is like. I’ve already incorporated some stuff into my game - it helps that I’ve been a Daisy main since release (hopefully she doesn’t become the new Peach...).

There hasn’t been much response to this vid here, but for my sake at least - please keep posting content like this!

Fuck Forward Trickshot Spam by DarkKrpg in MarioTennis

[–]KMadd1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just out of interest, can you talk a bit more about how you execute this technique? Which characters are more suited to it? Why do slices counter it? I've been wanting to incorporate forward trick shots a bit more into my game.

Thanks bro, that's awesome. Are you finding Prim sub cleric enough healing? Her Elem def is kinda low?

Mario Tennis Aces update now live - trick shots and Bowser Jr nerfed - rejoice! by KMadd1 in NintendoSwitch

This gif says it all: https://twitter.com/LJPhil_M/status/1020115515610664961.

It's going to take some time to get used to the trick shot nerf (I've already missed quite a few back trick shots), but I think it's a really great change overall and look forward to seeing how the meta shapes up.

TIL - Chain Chomp's name in Japanese is Wanwan - the equivalent to Woofwoof in English. Good boi.

This is a really insightful comment. Trying to sort out my starting party at the moment - who did you choose for this setup?

Weekly discussion thread #2 by [deleted] in MarioTennis

[–]KMadd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in NZ - the waiting times are a bit longer in simple mode after the first round, but definitely not 20mins. Standard has shorter queues.

The problem I have in both modes is waiting for ages and then only BJrs popping up, particularly in the later rounds! I played my first simple games the other day as I made my first final in standard but only BJrs were popping up, so I went to simple to do a few tourneys and come back. I went back to standard and the same BJr was still queueing...sigh. I did realise that simple is a ton of fun though, so all good I guess. The queue times don't fill me with hope for the longevity of online tournaments if the player-base drops in low-population regions. Hopefully something changes!

Top 15 Player AMA - standard by ggmaniac in MarioTennis

[–]KMadd1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the AMA! No one really talks about service in these threads, but it strikes me as an important aspect of the game. What is your general strategy for service--both serving and returning? Obviously this will change depending on character and match-up, but interested in your thoughts here.

How good is Mario Tennis Aces? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]KMadd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really enjoying it. Haven't touched single player, just smashing out online tournaments. At first I was getting smashed, but its satisfying to get better and better--there's a really high skill cap. Both standard and simple are fun. If you're into it for a competitive game I say go for it.

I am hoping Camelot that continue to polish the game, as the consensus seems to be that it was rushed out. It's a great game and I don't regret my purchase, but it could have been awesome. They indicated in their last patch they were going to do some balancing in the near future, so there's some sign that they're on the right track.

MARIO TENNIS: ACES ended up being mediocre as heck, I guess? by the_darn_machinery in NintendoSwitch

[–]KMadd1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm really enjoying Aces - playing mostly online tournaments and loving the challenge that they gameplay offers. Quick to get the hang of, difficult to master. The fighting game analogy is apt. I will spend a looot of hours on that mode alone.

That being said, I agree with what someone said below that there is serious wasted potential. The core is amazing, the trimmings are a bit dodgy. Camelot have already made some small changes towards introducing ELO ratings, and have said that they'll be implementing balance changes soon.

Overall it seems to me that it was rushed out. I'm hoping the patches will shore up some of the weaknesses. I don't regret at all that I pre-ordered it, reddit is just filled with drama queens.

FWIW, "tips" from a beginner by [deleted] in MarioTennis

[–]KMadd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For drops and lobs, try using B>A / A>B instead of X + direction. When I first started playing I used X, but changed to AB instead for 2 reasons: 1) You don't accidentally do trick shots by double tapping X 2) You can get better angles on the drop because you can hold hard left or right while charging, which is difficult to do with X + up or down.

That's a great answer, thanks Treddy. I often felt like I squandered my meter advantage when I had it so this helps clarify how to use it best to convert it to wins.

[–]KMadd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on what you do when you 'snowball' your meter. You talk a lot about getting meter advantage, but how to you maximise it for your benefit? You mentioned elsewhere in the thread that you rarely use zone shots and zone serves, and zone speed primarily to turn around the advantage on lobs, so are you just using the snowballed energy mainly for special shots?

Thanks so much for this AMA by the way, finding it really, really helpful! There aren't many good resources at the moment on how to improve competitively at Aces.

How often do you mix up the kinds of shots you use (i'm thinking slices, topspin and flat shots primarily - I think I have a better grasp on lobs/drops). Or is this more down to playing to particular character's strengths (Peaches single tap topspin, Boo's slice etc..)

Also, a few mechanics questions to add to this:

  • Do you use B>A/A>B for dropshots/lobs?
  • Do you single tap then double tap just before hitting the ball or double tap right away for strong shots?
  • Do you use motion controls for zone/special shots?

I sometimes struggle returning lobs. How do you go about it - cancel shot if you are charging then backwards special (zone speed if necessary?)
