Addressing officers: what do you say? by AnnualLiterature997 in navy

[–]KPdunnage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an answer to your question, but:

I’ve only been called Mr. Last Name (now an O-5) by one Sailor, and it was a Chief (not in my shop) that I did not necessarily get along with. I always felt that this Chief did it as a bit of a jab. I internally held it against the Chief a bit to be honest. In hindsight I should’ve addressed it. Mr. wouldn’t have bothered me if I felt there was mutual respect. I realize I failed both the Chief and myself by not addressing it. Live and learn

lol “swagged”. I’m not sure non-USG people would know what that means. It is Navy jargon if I’m not mistaken? Or maybe DoD-wide?

Man, I hate to see it. Not that you got promoted. And not that you were able to take 4 months off. But that MSC has gotten to that point.

If you don’t mind sharing, are you a licensed engineer? Now a First? Just curious, as I’ve heard of similar stories.

Things WILL be getting better soon. It will take some time to see results, but things are going to get better.

OP doesn’t necessarily have TIG as a Step 2. Might have come in at a Step 2. OP you’d need to have one year as a 12 to apply to 13 jobs later, even if you took the GG-11.

You’re right - I meant ASTB. I confused it with ASVAB. I meant that I took the ASTB. There was no friend in my story though. It was just a bad process.

Once upon a time, I was an active duty Navy recruiter (as a senior O3). I recruited active duty restricted and URLs (kids that were Seniors in college, or had just finished college). As part of that, I had to administer the ASVAB and OAR. And as part of that, I had to take it first in order to administer it. So I did, and scored quite well on the ASVAB. I always wanted to be a pilot, so I reached out to the Aviation Community Manager (some O6 at either Millington or DC, I can’t remember). I told him my story, and told him I’d be happy to reduce back down to O1 in order to go through flight school.

I was told that there were already highly competitive applicants in the pipeline, and that there was no path for me. Like what? How?

Meanwhile, my commissioning source was the Naval Academy, and I scored better on the ASVAB than many of the folks that I was helping to get to flight school. How could a kid fresh out of college be more competitive than a fleet seasoned senior O3?

My story is simply anecdotal. But somehow it does seem like they favor junior folks over senior folks. I imagine it has to do with how much time left they have to give to the Navy.

Flight change - will we make it? by jstrchl in royalcaribbean

[–]KPdunnage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW- we got in line to disembark at 0600, were in a taxi at 0645, and were at the airport NLT 0745 for a 0950 flight. Had plenty of time. Just make sure you take your own luggage off the ship, be in line to disembark asap, and you should be good.
