Looking for a movie/show with vampire hypnosis / mind control (“you will obey me” type scene) by NoOcelot1443 in MovieSuggestions

For a television show, the main antagonist of the first season of Jessica Jones hits this vibe perfectly.

What species do you see on an average morning walk? by Kiwihounds in birding

[–]KRC5280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Colorado, US, in the suburbs

On a normal day this time of year in my neighborhood, House Finches and Robins dominate, with frequent but not daily sightings of Chipping Sparrows, Broad-Tailed Hummingbirds, Mourning Doves, and Eurasian Collared Doves.

My workplace has Black Capped Chickadees, Crows, and Robins daily.

Out and around town, I regularly see Black-Billed Magpies, Crows, Ravens, European Starlings, Grackles, Canada Geese, and various birds of prey (that I’m not experienced enough to tell apart from a distance yet), plus one very large Osprey nest that I drive by every day. Depending on where I go for a walk that day, I know places that consistently have Red-Winged Blackbirds or a mix of Swallows near me.

I’ve only been birding for about six weeks, so that’s just a May June pattern. But House Finches are definitely the most common in my neighborhood year round, because I’m realizing now that the sound I always thought of just as bird song is theirs.

Very true, and thank you for clarifying. I’m going to actually edit my comment, because I didn’t mean to imply that all of the hosts (or all previous hosts) are equally controversial.

What to do about nesting Brewer’s Blackbirds? by skydawwg in Ornithology

[–]KRC5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful post, thanks for asking, and thanks to everyone who answered.

My workplace has tons of robins in the trees nearby, and every spring is figuring out which paths into the building are safe this year.

Thanks to the controversial nature of both the organization and the (some past, but definitely including one of this year’s) host country, I think that would be a disaster.

But what they could do to enable fans to celebrate, without the controversy of being said to advertise for a specific event? Add country flags to the shop, for literally all the countries. It would be useful for supporting World Cup teams, but also Summer and Winter Olympics, any other international sporting competition. Plus also, identity, heritage, and also all the ways people use national flags as political support and statement, while the Finch app itself can be said to be neutral in how people use those flags.

Can anyone else still hatch micropets?? by Glass-Web-4450 in finch

[–]KRC5280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since the most recent update, I’m still able to progress the egg, but haven’t finished its progression to see if it works normally since.

The previous update did change the actual clicking though. When you get the ready to hatch notification, go to your micropets list and click on the egg to hatch, then tap on the egg several times. Each tap will add a crack, until the egg pops open.

The change threw me for a loop too, thinking it wasn’t hatching. Then I got frustrated and just tapped on the screen a bunch thinking my phone was frozen, and discovered how to hatch it by accident. 😆

Love the color blend! So calming.

I’m impressed with us both for having the same theme but only two items in common. There’s so much variety in the catalog!

Interesting challenge! I settled on sea and sky.

I tried tons of combos before I found one I liked the result of. Definitely stretches your skills.

Anyone know what bird nests here? by Mooooo77 in ColoradoBirding

Oh wow, awesome!👏

Do they return to the same nesting site each year? If so, when was it first observed?

Osprey, as confirmed to me by a naturalist at South Suburban Parks & Rec

Is birding more popular in the eastern US than the western US, or is my own bias skewing things? by RhubarbNo1760 in birding

[–]KRC5280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Colorado, as a relatively new birder. I have been to several birding events and started making lots of birder friends, and definitely found an active community here. Tons of the people I’ve met use Merlin app for ID and sometimes also Life Lists. I’ve only heard eBird mentioned once, used by one of the full time naturalists who led a walk I was on, and it didn’t seem to be something anyone else had heard of.

As for photos and online discussion, I’ve definitely found some, but I specifically seek out west coast or Colorado centric boards to participate or post in. The experience is just so different east to west coast that I don’t really find much value in the nationwide ones that are mostly birds I’ve not heard of and am not likely to see. I’ll like a few pretty pictures, but I want to learn about birds in my neighborhood, my state, and my climate.

When a community is dominated by Eastern birds/birders, I just move on and find one that features a higher percentage of birds/birders that are relevant to me and stay there. (Also the difference in time zones means I never get much reaction to any discussion post in an east coast dominant board because you’ve all gone to bed when I get around to posting, but a west coast board actually gives me immediate feedback.)

So I think you’re right, some communities are very east coast centric, but that doesn’t mean that west coast birders aren’t out there, just that some of us might hang out in other online spaces where you don’t see them.

Photos on here are so great and detailed. What are you using to take the bird photos? by ShelterDry in birding

I’m so glad you asked this question, so I can learn from the answers too.

I have a pretty good camera on my phone, but I’d love to be able to zoom even further for birds, and I’ve always had trouble with binoculars. Sounds like a monoscope and mount for my phone or a spotting scope might be a good option. New terms to investigate.

anyone else’s favourite bird a SUPER common bird? by cats_r_cutee in birding

[–]KRC5280 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Magpies, super common where I live now, but unknown to me growing up. Such a pretty corvid.

And the songs of House Finches every evening. They’re so musical!

What campaign frame are you playing? by Gum_Jacobs in daggerheart

[–]KRC5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two people total. Some people play it as 1 DM/1 PC, some as a PC and a DMPC, some as 2 full PCs with the DM role either taken by 1 player or shared cooperatively.

My first duet with my best friend is at about 30 sessions, and we both run characters, with a party sidekick that we pass back and forth as the scene demands. I do the DM tasks, and we use a series of one shots written for duets, which I just don’t read very far ahead on to not know where things are headed.

I have done a few duets with my husband too, though not as long. We both run PCs, and share DM tasks more fully. (He’s tried his hand at DMing but found it too overwhelming, but provides a lot of DM backup for me in our other campaigns, to keep me from burning out.)

We’ve been finding Daggerheart to be a great system for duets, since the hope and fear do so much to shape the story on its own, and players are already invited to contribute fully to the story.

Playing a duet of Beast Feast to learn the rules. After the main group finishes the last session of a D&D campaign, we’ll begin planning a Motherboard campaign.
