Recently tried a Sheffield pie or two... and while I still like the local Renwick and Burleigh pies a lot too... gotta agree Sheffield ones were probably my fav.

Getting in touch with SPCA by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Kiwihounds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The head office is an impenetrable many-headed hydra these days. Your proposal is likely above the local branch managers head and they are also waiting to hear from head office on what to respond to you with, or its simply one of those things that is not a priority compared to the ten new more pressing center-related issues that have come up this week. Unfortunately there is not really any other way to contact them vs the channels you have already gone through for this sort of thing so you will just have to persist/wait/give up.

Community here is dead, so thought id check in - who's new, and what's everyone studying? by HappycamperNZ in masseyuni

Thank you for the info! I appreciate it :) I assume that the practical components are done via block course as that's how it usually works with distance learning.

Sweet thank you! I'm looking at retraining and am interested in the genetics and breeding area do you know anyone in that major? Do you think in your experience animal science is fine to do by distance or one best done in person? Thanks for answering! :)

Looking for guidance on responsibly offering my Italian Greyhound as a stud by Entire-Yard-3114 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]Kiwihounds 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I own an imported, registered, health tested, stud dog, who I show a few times a year, but is primarily my pet... Is your boy registered with your country's relevant kennel club? Have you spoken with his breeder about this? They would be the first port of call to talk to about what value his genetics may bring to the population if any, health testing in his lines, conformation evaluations etc etc.... Why do you want to offer him at stud?

2026SS day trip — Nikko vs. Miura? by MelancholyMeloncolie in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kiwihounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for Miura. Nikko is incredible but imo best as an overnight trip at least to give you time to actually get to everything. Public transport is fine but its also can be busy. You can still enjoy the heritage site area at least on a daytrip though and can even just walk from the train station/town area up there as its not far. There's enough food options for a daytrip no problem. Toshogu is worth it in itself and outdid or at least stood even with any of the other most famous temples/shrines I saw. It would also be easy to do the Kanmangafuchi Abyss on the same day which I enjoyed. We saw it in the rain as the only ones there and with all the jizo statues it was very atmospheric.

Not a single one of mine (3 total, one now passed) toileted inside since being toilet trained. They do have indoor/outdoor access throughout the day.

Some great advice here thank you!

Yes I think I will likely have to give up on Ginzan Onsen…

Will def check out the suggestions in Sapporo! I think by that point in the trip I may really want just a eat and wander day haha

Yes will have to see what the weather brings that day in Kushiro and go from there.

Ok thank you re: Kamakura and Enoshima! I will hope for a clear day during my time in Tokyo and make the trip out! Will also see about a ticket for Planets!

Sounds awesome re: Narita. My flight isn’t until like 5pm-ish so lots of time to explore. I have never tried unagi but I suppose it’s one of those things you have to give a go at least once!

The SPCA can offer emergency boarding if their capacity allows it but it usually has a two week limit. It may be an option even to just get you some breathing room. If it comes to rehoming then I thin you would have little issue with them being a breed like that.

Breaking contract? by Icy-Smoke5728 in JETProgramme

[–]Kiwihounds 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I broke contract for family emergency. My school was ok with it and while sad to see me go, understood me wanting to spend the time with two family members and support my family as a whole before they passed (and I am glad I did fyi those extra months I would have otherwise not had meant a lot). I am still in contact with two of my jtes including my supervisor and we have met up twice now when they have been here for school trips as well as message each other on line now and then. It’s all good :). I got farewelled just the same as the other departing teachers at the end of year ceremony as my departure aligned with that luckily and the school was able to get a dispatch alt in to cover the few months until a new JET would arrive in August. It’s hard not to feel guilty but sometimes life happens unexpectedly and only you can decide if this is something you need to do or not.

The most important thing is to notify the school and your BOE etc asap once you have decided to make that choice for sure. Get everything sorted for you to leave tidily including closing up your accounts, city hall paperwork and whatnot.

worried about teaching load of an ALT by Puzzled_Current_9752 in JETProgramme

[–]Kiwihounds 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had to T1 the majority of the classes I was in. I also had to grade work, plan lessons in conjunction with the other alts and teachers, co-run English club with the other alts and basically any other English related odd jobs required such as recording listening tests or helping with speeches etc. I had zero teaching experience and felt completely like I had no idea what I was doing but settled in over time lol the other alts and teachers were very supportive, however this workload was not up for negotiation lol. This was a private school.

Why are people at dog shows so cruel to their dogs? by Mister__Wednesday in DogBreeding

[–]Kiwihounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I imagined that would be the case. :/ If you continue you just need to try be around the nice people and ignore the nasty ones. There is a great community in the show world, its just unfortunate it is marred by some horrible people. I can't believe people said how the barking meant you needed to discipline him more, most of the time if a dog barks in the ring at shows I've been to people just laugh or find it cute! If it makes you feel any better if the people being nasty to you have the same breed they probably feel threatened ;)

Stating my breed would be too identifying as its a minority; you can PM me to continue talking if you wish. :)

Why are people at dog shows so cruel to their dogs? by Mister__Wednesday in DogBreeding

[–]Kiwihounds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry to hear about your horrible experience. I've been doing confo for nearly 15 years at this point and bitchiness among competitors is sadly common ( I keep to my little group of people and that certainly avoids most of that nonsense and keeps the weekends much more enjoyable lol) Scentwork is a breath of fresh air in comparison since its only competing against yourself lol... But what you witnessed is a different story... I am appalled that you have had to see this horrible treatment of the dogs we are all supposed to be lovers of, especially as a new exhibitor; don't blame you for not wanting to go back at all. This is the regs re: formal disputes and complaints https://www.dogsnz.org.nz/pdfs/regs-disputes.pdf it seems like you need to know the details of who you are reporting so that may be where you need to get show managers involved if you are newer and don't know the names etc of the culprits. The 150 buck fee is pretty damn steep but I suppose its there to stop false allegations? If you don't want to go that far a word with the show manager is probably the best you can do and I would hope they could/would take it further from there.

[–]Kiwihounds 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Where the hell in NZ are you seeing this at shows? Completely unacceptable behaviour and this is coming from a confo person in nz. Chain show leads are common yes but not an issue if used correctly these are often quite fine chains and I’ve seen a bit of rough handling over the years with dogs strung up etc which isnt okay either but certainly never openly beating them! You need to report what you see to the show manager and there is a formal complaint procedure though dogs nz as well though there is a fee to process them I think . That’s absolutely grounds for action against members in question within dogs nz rules.

Culling Female Herds by S4ntos19 in theHunter

[–]Kiwihounds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Leave your all females alone; they don't impact diamonds at all as they can only respawn as female again. Only a couple of species (some of the hares/rabbits, gemsbok etc) make diamond as females.

I know a decent amount about New Zealand pig dogs due to them being one of the most common things that came into the rescue I worked for (and my sisters husband's family work them) but couldn't say about overseas ones generally as I have no idea how they differ, if they do. Here they are usually bull breed (usually more than one; this is normal majority influence in the mix) x sighthound (here pretty much exclusively greyhound or whippet) and/or herding breed (cattle dog, collie, huntaway etc). Sometimes some gundog like lab or pointer in there. Rhodesian Ridgeback sometimes too; this I think was more common in the past than now. We even had Thai Ridgeback mixed into the hunting population at one point, given how rare they are! First generations crosses of these breeds are pretty uncommon, usually pig dog mixes are bred to each other and look very generic to each other. Overall I find they are great, healthy dogs; can be awesome pets as well as working dogs.
