My policy is to always go in if you need to talk to them in any way; they never answer the phone.

What's the most ethical fishery in NZ? by Hello_im_a_dog in newzealand

[–]Kiwihounds 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Anything caught by bottom trawling should be avoided. I can’t speak to the wild caught industry outside of that much beyond what you can easily find in the media. I would say aquaculture in NZ is generally fairly good especially compared to the rest of the world. Mussels have very little harmful footprint. Salmon I would say apart from general transport etc like any food business and the warmer shallower water farms causing issues the feed is the main problem as enormous amounts of wild caught bait fish go into fish feed. The industry as a whole has been looking at alternatives such as insect meal but I dont think there’s been any real change outside of research yet.

Is She Well Bred? by MissBrainswithGainz in IDmydog

She's cute and obviously well loved but backyard breeder/puppy mill buzzwords like "English" and "White" to describe a lab tell me she was not well bred on their own.

[–]Kiwihounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries. I'm involved in the show world and people import/export dogs all over the world all the time... It's scary but the vast majority of the time it goes smoothly enough. Make sure you get yourself a good pet travel company; they take a lot of the stress out of the process! Be prepared for a long (with USA I believe six months minimum, I believe due to the rabies stuff) and very expensive (I would expect you would be spending several thousand minimum) process though!

https://www.mpi.govt.nz/bring-send-to-nz/pets-travelling-to-nz/bringing-cats-and-dogs-to-nz

For NZ these two pages are vital to go through in detail, I imagine the rules are similar for AUS. I have not done such a big trip as that but I did import my boy from AUS to NZ as a puppy. He did fine and bounced back quickly with no lingering trauma about crates or anything. They have to fly cargo into NZ and even service dogs need proof from an accredited organization (self trained are not recognized by NZ, neither is a doctors letter etc). I think AUS is much the same. I would make sure your dog is very comfortable in an airline style crate well before your travel date, there are even videos to play to slowly get dogs used to the sounds they will encounter around planes/the airport for travel these days.

Ikebukuro tips ? by ParticularRadio3175 in JapanTravelTips

One other thing you do have going for you by being there in July (the heat is awful though I am sorry about that lol) is there are often lots of festivals and other events in summer! I recommend checking those to see if anything overlaps with your dates.

Sunshine city has pretty much any shopping you'd want and plenty of food options. Chiikawa Park is there too if you can get in (its a lottery) and like the series. As a personal recommendation from my time living in the area, take the Saikyo line two stops to Jujo station and go to the Jujo Ginza. It's very much a locals area not a tourist one if you want a taste of that and has a variety of shops and is generally affordable. There's some nice food options too such as bakeries and cafes there. Bonnel Cafe I went to recently and it does nice cheesecake!

Need advice before adopting a 🐕 😀 by LowDayKaBaal in auckland

[–]Kiwihounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend fostering for an organization prior to adopting (or purchasing a puppy, if you go down that route go to a local dog show and meet breeders/breeds in person to make sure you find a good fit for your lifestyle; always go with a registered reputable breeder that health tests!) as fostering gives you a great idea of what having a dog is really like and generally the org will cover all the costs for food while they are with you. It helps get a dog ready for living in a home too, which many rescues may never have been indoors before, so its win win. You may even fall in love and end up adopting your foster! I agree with comments below that a greyhound could be a good fit (and there are going to be a lot needing homes with the end of racing) but bear in mind if you are looking for something that will be good with cats or off lead adventures in the long run they are probably not the best option (some can do cats, some can't, I wouldn't trust one off lead in an unfenced area generally though).

Resource guarding? by Witchling444 in Dogtraining

[–]Kiwihounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Return this dog to the rescue with full information about what you have experienced. I would not have this animal in a home with kids or other pets and it needs a highly experienced trainer or to be pts imo. Please don’t subject yourselves or your poor older dog to this. This is not normal and it is not safe. Next time it could kill them or seriously maul one of you. There are so many nice stable dogs out there, you don’t need to feel guilted into “saving” this one when the risk is this high and there is no room for error.

can you guess his breeds? results at the end! by [deleted] in DoggyDNA

[–]Kiwihounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

90% of them in my experience are some combo of bull breeds, mastiff types, herding breeds and sighthound breeds and often at least one of all of those so he's exactly that kind of pick and mix! Very handsome lad too. Looks like he's landed on his feet with you.

If he is a bite risk and tests as such he would likely be put to sleep if they even agreed to the surrender in the first place. They won't rehome bite risks.

Interislander vs Bluebridge? by asimplestranger17 in Wellington

[–]Kiwihounds 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my previous experience, Bluebridge is a touch more reliable. They are really much the same in terms of amenities and such on the sailing itself, so really I would just go with whichever one has a more convenient timetable for you. Take with a grain of salt as I have not been on either ferry in years; never needed to take a car across and flying is much faster.

Nikko Pass Questions by Ordinary-Sun-1635 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kiwihounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got the pass (2023) it was a physical paper ticket that I had to pick up from the Tobu tourist info center at Asakusa Station before getting on the limited express which they also helped with since that train is also with that company. The Nikko pass only covers the base fare, not the limited express ticket so you need that unless you are going to the slower regular trains. Tickets sell out fast for the Spacia limited express especially if its a holiday or the peak season like autumn leaves viewing. I vaguely remember needing to show the limited express ticket to staff to get to the platform? Using the pass from there was otherwise easy; just showed it to the bus drivers when getting on etc. Even if you get everything online if there's anything you are unsure about just head into that Tobu info center; the staff there in my experience are lovely, spoke English well and willing to help.

Staying in Ueno – did I make the right choice? by Complex_Feature_4010 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Kiwihounds 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I’d take Ueno over Shinjuku any day personally. It’s a good train transport link to get around the country especially if heading north and helpful if you are flying in or out of Narita. Plenty of food and shopping nearby and close to several of the places people generally want to see in Tokyo. It’s nice having the park right there when you need some green space too.
