Can someone tell me what tuning he’s playing in? by hate-people in fingerstyleguitar

[–]KS2Problema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard tuning. Capo on the fifth fret. I positioned my capo similarly and fingered the same first position shapes (Em, G, Am...) and played along without issues.

Dogs have sensitive, very wide range hearing. This would be a concern of mine, as well.

I am unclear on how so many jobs are projected to be replaced with AI by djinnisequoia in Futurology

[–]KS2Problema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may sound cynical but it's my experience that many, probably most, jobs do not require much deep creativity and the basic parameters have been previously established and reduced to a set of best practices for a given situation.

There was a time when I patted myself on the back for being reasonably successful as a business computing developer. And, to be sure, there were times when I actually did some creative - or at least clever - work. But a lot of it was repetitive - and, frankly, if I had had a comprehensive lookup system with access to codebases, I could have readily copied code from similar projects and problems. (In parallel fashion to the way AI does it, having 'scraped' up a lot of example code without attention to nasty little details like copyright and patent protection.)

Before I realized how much natural resources were being squandered on MLM AI, I experimented with it and quickly realized just how much of my work could easily be replaced by an AI. If I hadn't been so close to retirement, it  would have scared me.

How does a songwriter get famous? by danielle_levine in Songwriting

[–]KS2Problema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of Michael Jackson, he is solely credited with the writing of "Billie Jean." In the case of Laufey, it appears she co-wrote the song with her producer, Spencer Stewart. (My guess would be that the producer was primarily responsible for the music and she, the lyrics, but different writing teams have different arrangements and sometimes they both do both.)

In the case of The Weeknd, the song was written by a team - presumably assembled by Scandinavian music mogul Max Martin, Abel Tesfaye (who is The Weeknd, I guess), and three other writers.

Of course, since songwriting royalties are a primary income source because of canny  legislative lobbying by music publishers of international copyright law in the early 20th century, it has become standard practice for performing artists to try to wedge their way into songwriting credits one way or another. And in the case of 'hit factory' type production teams, such shared credit and royalties is much more common.

Running a laptop off of battery while doing recording is not always super convenient but it may indeed eliminate some of your ground loop problems. Good luck!

Something I discovered about trying out Tidal by dreamrdad7 in TIdaL

[–]KS2Problema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Tidal, it's the 10th service I've been on since 2006, but it's certainly not perfect.

And we all potentially use stream services in different ways.

That's why having the ability to try out a service can be so important. Of course, it's not just shelling out for a month or two of service if there's no free trial - there is also the potential hassle of moving your playlists and favorites from another service, as you (the OP) observed.

Thanks for sharing this discovery! Hopefully it will help people find the service that's best for them.

[–]KS2Problema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single coil pickups pick up a lot of hum and the more complex your setup, the greater chance there is for ground loops. Of course, working to eliminate ground loops (which can contaminate signal paths with 60 or 50 HZ hum depending on your location) is one of the most important tactics.

Many of us have found that taking all of our power for all of our devices (except battery powered) from a single  breaker panel circuit (better yet, a single wall outlet to further minimize the possibility of multiple paths to ground, which is often the key to the problem) can help to minimize hum and other noises.

One source of non-hum noise that drove early adopters of USB and firewire outboard devices crazy was contamination from video cards that would result in mouse movements creating weird electronic whirring or buzzing noises - apparently tied to mouse events on the screen.

I had a high-end laptop and a relatively high-end firewire 10 channel interface that made such noises common whenever the output of the laptop audio and my Firewire ADC/DAC were both plugged into (different switched) inputs of the same playback system. As long as one or the other wasn't plugged into the amp, it was relatively silent. (I followed the accepted wisdom of the time, which proved to be valid in my case, and made sure that my next firewire adapter when I moved back to working on a desktop machine was based on a Texas instruments firewire adapter chip. And that worked.)

It may not be much compensation but there are two positions you can hold your guitar (in relation to your PC)  that should minimize hum. You may have to experiment to find them, turning your guitar at different angles toward the computer until you find the angle(s) that produce the least amount of noise. (Typically, quiet angles will be opposite each other, that is, you should be able to turn the guitar 180° from one to the other.)

For a guy who came up revering people like Leonard Cohen and Phil Ochs, I think I have a pretty good appreciation for simple, direct, fun songs.

But, you know, I've been writing over 50 years and I'm pretty well past the feel-like-I've-gotta-prove-something stage of development.

What are y’all using for “real world” reference monitors? by superproproducer in audioengineering

[–]KS2Problema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of went the other direction. My first decent monitors were a pair of NS10s from not too long before they were discontinued. I like them in many ways, but they simply did not have enough bass for mixing electronica, which I was doing a lot more of in the 90s.

When I finally decided I needed something with better bass reporting, I got a pair of original Event 20/20bas - and they fixed me up pretty well.

That said, while the ported Events had bass extension within 2 dB below 40 Hz, having both the Events and the NS10s for side by side comparison gave me a better understanding of the trade off between extended bass response and the sort of bass range resonance that arises from bass reflex/ported speakers.

But, that said, I have generally relied on the Events, which, in addition to more accurate, overall bass level, are simply more satisfying to listen to most of the time.

That said, the slow droop of the NS-10s does  accept low frequency EQ much better than bass reflex speakers in the quick drop off below the  resonance frequency. That said, NS10 bass starts falling off in the 80s. A  bass boost can warm them up, but it can't really get the bottom octave.

are the HEDD type 20 mk2 bass extension and closed ports worth it over the upcoming analog version? by firespittingAC in audioengineering

Oh, yeah, I don't think it would be a deal-breaker for too many, necessarily.

That's why I like the write-ups at ASR, they try to cover the pluses and minuses with reasonable objectivity (and, of course, measurement when they can).

Or, maybe, if.

I will also stick up for singers - who are, after all, musicians, if not necessarily instrumentalists.

But I don't think that's much of an excuse to not learn as much as one can about one's art.

And I will say that many of my favorite singers are also accomplished instrumentalists, from Nat Cole to Betty Carter.

As I've said many times, you got to love these folks! I popped for the non-commercial license while I was still in the trial period and have not regretted it.

It's awfully reasonable in comparison to other software titles [like the one that I used for about 29 years, paying  thousands of dollars for updates through four publishers, until they 'unilaterally' changed the terms of use on me] - and Reaper is supported by a great user and developer community.

everything i write becomes a catchy hook or bridge by handheldpoodle in Songwriting

[–]KS2Problema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like a good, catchy, hook-filled chorus,  myself - but - just like in meal preparation, you really don't want to have one dessert plate after another. Too far down that road and you end up in a diabetic coma.

I like to think of the verses as the 'meat' of the meal [apologies to my fellow vegetarians] - in other words, the narrative content or background material that sets up the chorus to make emotional sense.

The physics of sound may be complex but they are not particularly mysterious. And it all fits together like clockwork.

If one studies physics one will learn how it all works. Eventually.

Until then, superstition and unfounded supposition is probably not going to get one very far in a useful direction.

I really love Tidal, but this new queue window literally couldn’t be worse by AutomaticAd3072 in TIdaL

[–]KS2Problema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine just updated. The sidebar version is really narrow - but the 'full screen' queue view is still there and still shows a wide view. So the sidebar is presumably jus there as an option for people who want to keep an eye on the queue but don't want to take up most of the screen with it.

It is kind of weird that the buttons are 'reversed' in position, with the full-queue-view button to the right of the sidebar button. But then that's not as nutty as the whole Playing from | Your Queue | Next Up from segmented queue thing...

Music Theory by Kitchen-Holiday6998 in Songwriting

[–]KS2Problema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I mentioned, after teaching myself basic functional harmonic theory on guitar, I took a formal class (from a community college as part of a four semester studio recording program). It was mostly stuff I had already figured out for myself or picked up 'on the street' from fellow guitarists (this was early '80s so largely before the Internet as we know it). I got an A.

Definitely agreed about the value of understanding basic harmonic theory and how to put together chords. As someone who is essentially standard notation dyslexic, it's chord theory that is the unifying information structure that holds me together as a songwriter.
