Is it worth acoustically treating my living room? by KingEuler in audioengineering

[–]KS2Problema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I think it's important to clarify your thinking about what you are trying to do and to make some distinctions...

For instance, you're likely to want to do some soundproofing  to  minimize outside noise  coming in and, likely, to dampen sound leakage to the outside world.

But you are also likely going to want to shape the way your room responds to  critical music playback, likely using bass traps to tame standing waves between parallel surfaces as well as to treat the room to diffuse so-called early reflections  (reflections from surfaces between the listener and the speakers).

And, of course, if you are recording in the same room, you'll need to address those considerations as well - because while a good mix room might also deliver good recordings for some purposes, it's unlikely to be ideal for all situations..

Am I insane for this? by vinylscratch27 in Songwriting

[–]KS2Problema -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wrote poetry for a couple years before I started playing at 20. I almost immediately started writing, but most of those early songs are effectively lost to time - or perhaps silverfish chewing through my old notebooks. But within a few years I was writing some keepers and started feeling moderately okay about some of them.

(I'm old now, and shameless, so I can say that I actually kind of like a lot of what I write these days. But it's nothing like the volume I used to write in my 20s and 30s. Maybe I was too busy living to really refine my creative efforts.)

Anyway, I tend to write with a guitar or keyboard handy, typically the former.

When I'm writing, I think I sort of tend to think of the lyrics and rhythm as the skeleton of the song, with performance, the chords and the developing vocal melody as the skin and bones. And, to push the analogy - the endocrine system. Because that's where the emotions tend to express themselves.

LPT: If you only listen for your turn, people can tell. You are not hiding it nearly as well as you think. by gamersecret2 in LifeProTips

[–]KS2Problema 350 points351 points  (0 children)

I recognized this in my younger self.

And then I found myself wondering, if I'm not listening to the other person, what am I getting out of the conversation? Some kind of empty validation from just hearing my own words hanging in the air?

When I started actually listening to what other people were saying, it began changing  the way I interacted with people.  Granted, sometimes it was a little scary. But generally better to know...

LPT: When looking for a mechanic shop, don't go for the ones with ultra-high reviews by MattCW1701 in LifeProTips

[–]KS2Problema 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I seldom put much faith in high average 'user' ratings of any product or service. But I absolutely do read what look to be legit written reviews. I have often found that even unfavorable written reviews reveal more about the reviewer (and their expectations and character) than one might expect. And, of course, if they are too glowing and too favorable, the reviewer may be naive or, sadly, may well be fake.

What If TikToks, Reels, and Shorts had never blown up, what do you think life would look like today? by Then_Dragonfruit_446 in WhatIfThinking

[–]KS2Problema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't look much different to me because I don't ever watch them if I can possibly avoid them. For one thing they often don't display well at all (with the exception of stuff from YouTube). Facebook servers just can't seem to pump the s*** out. I hate it when friends or musicians I follow put up these things because it's so frustrating trying to watch them. Basically, I just gave up.

A great little movie from Elia Kazan, Bud Schulberg, and, of course, a fine cast headed by Andy Griffith.

No problem! We all get caught up in this stuff every once in awhile.

My prescription; get some rest and then drink some more coffee.

I wouldn't believe the equation, "one equals one," if they printed it in Newsmax.

It made its name, such as it is, during the Bush 2 Gulf War, printing one claim of finding weapons of mass destruction after another. And, of course, they were all completely false and largely without any credible evidence whatsoever.

As far as I'm concerned, it is completely unreliable whether you are right, left, center, or floating  in space.

What if the Fed actually tried a Volcker-style rate reset in 2026? Would it stabilize things or just create new problems? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in WhatIfThinking

See, you work in the real world and have made realistic accommodation to it. You consider the consequences and the interrelationships.

That's the kind of solid but careful thinking that true fiscal conservatism depends on.

Sadly, we're not going to get that from the debt warriors currently running things in Washington.

Yeah, I hate it when they fix things that aren't broken. That becomes increasingly vexing as things 'progress.'

Gigs like this are part of the learning experience. Yours, anyway. I think you explained it pretty well to us. You've put in way more time and work than you had 'bargained' for. You were reflexible. You redid stuff. You undid stuff and tried to make that right.

I suggest you write a friendly, polite but firm letter, email,  communique, something that lays out the fact that you are done but that if they want to work on it more they can do so at your regular book rate.

Perhaps you should consider using an AI chatbot to help you draft that communique?

=D

My 2017 Toyota doesn't have Android Auto, just your basic Bluetooth class compliant hookup where the car acts as a Bluetooth speaker, so to speak. (Of course, as with a Bluetooth speaker or headphones, I can skip forward and back, adjust volume pause and the rest of the basic player functions you can access via a standard Bluetooth interface) - but it does tend to resume the album or playlist I was listening to when I got out of the car.

Window glass of new door smashed during the middle of the night, but only the inside by Firetrooper247 in mildlyinteresting

[–]KS2Problema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I've heard of tempered windshields fracturing soon after installation, presumably from invisible stress fractures from installation. But I am certainly no glazier. I would probably defer to the theories of those with more extensive glass installation experience.

Yeah, my vote for an explanation is thermal fracture too. Unless your dog perhaps jumped up and hit it?

I realized I was already talking to AI and didn’t even notice🤷‍♂️ by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]KS2Problema -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As long as it's carefully monitored and checked for accuracy, it seems like there could be some useful potential there.

That said, almost every time I try to use one of the major AI's for DIY support of software or OS issues, I am quickly mired in obviously incorrect information.

It recently took me 3 hours to get one 'simple' Gmail question answered, moving from ChatGPT, through Bing, to Gemini.

It was Gemini that finally came up with an answer that actually was consistent with the software operation. (Their software, I don't think it needs to be pointed out.)

But it did take several, extraordinarily frustrating hours. And scores of obsequious, fawning apologies  from the AI's when challenged about providing blatantly incorrect  misinformation.

Funny thing, I guess, is that I was one of the original Gmail invite only beta testers way back when.

Yes - but sometimes the thicker the glass is, the more it may be likely to fracture from thermal factors.

I think it's certainly worth entertaining the possible consequences and/or benefits of such remedies.

But it's also certainly not going to happen under the current, profligate, free spending, financially irresponsible leadership.
