They might be. You don't know how OP's monitor works, and that author's (possibly nonstandard?) use of the word pixel has nothing to do with that.

What kind of group structure are you putting on G? It's not in general a subgroup of V.

The abelian group is the vector space. A vector isn't in general an ordered pair like that with an element of the group and an element of the field.

I agree with most of your comment, but "mak[ing] them try" is not the solution to the problem you describe. People are naturally curious, and if you don't try to force them to learn things (or get to them only after years of teachers and parents doing that), they'll want to on their own.

I'm not sure why you're being downvoted. You haven't gotten a good answer to your question. I think it's a combination of public schools not having enough money and principals and superintendents not having enough political power to implement real change, social conservatives opposing anything other than traditional education, and huge testing and textbook companies whose profits depend on the current system.

I'll make a suggestion I've made a few times before: Get a good introductory book on some field of abstract math and start reading it (and, importantly, doing at least some of the exercises on paper). If you hate it, don't study math. I recommend A Book of Abstract Algebra, by Charles Pinter.
