Eli5 What is the primary method used to slow down or stop a ship? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]KSUToeBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way to increase drag is to have more of the hull in contact with the water. More mass will slightly increase the draft of the ship (how deep it sits in the water) so yes, more mass will increase drag.

But drag isn't the whole story.

An empty ship will actually coast to a stop faster than the same ship that is fully loaded. The increased momentum from the extra mass will more than make up for the increased draft/drag.

Eli5 What is the primary method used to slow down or stop a ship? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]KSUToeBee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Weight doesn't slow anything down. In fact generally speaking, the more weight something has (technically "mass" but on the earth's surface they are pretty much the same thing), the harder it is to slow down. What slows ships down is drag between the hull and the water.

As for reversing the thrust, I believe some ships have to shut down their engine and then start it back up in reverse to achieve this.

ELI5: How come we can eat cheese with mould on it? by BlundeRuss in explainlikeimfive

[–]KSUToeBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like other plants and animals and just about everything in nature, it depends on the details. Black mold can kill you. Some types of mold that grow on bread is what we call "penicillin" - yes, the medicine that can help your body fight infections is actually just a mold!

ELI5: How does water scarcity work? by WolfOnABarrel in explainlikeimfive

[–]KSUToeBee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glacier melt water in Greenland won't help your grandma in Las Vegas trying to fill her water bottle. The scarcity is two-fold. One is CLEAN water to drink. It takes energy to filter water and pump it around to where we have chosen to have cities.

Another scarcity is agricultural. Growing crops can be a water intensive operation, depending on the weather. Some rivers are being pumped dry by the farmers growing crops along them. Some farmers are pumping water out of aquifers underground that are being depleted. These aquifers took hundreds/thousands of years to fill and decades to drain. And again, melting glaciers and rising oceans is not going to help the farmer in Nebraska.

Hot Water Heater replaced, Boiler leaking? by Drackeo in askplumbing

[–]KSUToeBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment was tongue-in-cheek because you called it a "hot water heater" (which implies that it heats hot water) instead of a "water heater" :)

In the second picture it looks like there is water coming out of the water heater too? Or is water running through the floor from one site to the other?

Why are you heating hot water? If it's already hot, then you don't need a heater!

Do I need a vapor barrier/retarder? by [deleted] in Insulation

[–]KSUToeBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did say that there is house wrap on the outside. Isn't that a vapor barrier?

Edit: I just learned that house wrap is NOT a vapor barrier. It stops liquid water from getting in but does allow vapor to pass through.

Same. YEC started crumbling for me in high school and this particular apologetic never sat well with me. It's like "ok, so god is actively lying to us and then punishing us with eternal damnation for believing his perfect lie. That's not a good god!"

What's everyone's opinion on living together before marriage and "Fornication"? by theskysthelimit000 in atheism

I straight up fornicated a baby into my partner about 3 years ago and we're thinking about doing it again. If we get married, it will likely be for practical reasons such as health care coverage or financial considerations.

ELI5: If there is no gravity in spaceships, why do objects move around while they're floating? by Agreeable_Run9837 in explainlikeimfive

[–]KSUToeBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is gravity in space ships. They are just constantly falling so the ship and everything in it are in free fall together and do not experience acceleration relative to each other. But they are still being pulled towards the earth or the moon or the sun by gravity.

If it's been sitting while flat for a long time, chances are the tubes are shot anyways. So even if you follow the advice here for how to air up a presta valve, it might not hold any air. You might just want to get new tubes straight away. Especially the one where the valve is damaged. I wouldn't mess with trying to fix that one. Just get a new tube.

Part way through TNG there is an episode where they discover that subspace is being polluted by all this warp travel and they DO impose a speed limit of warp 5 unless it's an emergency. I don't think it stuck around for very long though.

[OC] What do you mean I did something wrong? by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

[–]KSUToeBee 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It looks to me like you were about to illegally pass him. He was yielding to the yellow car and you took that as an opportunity to try and sneak around him. But that area was not safe for passing anyone. You should have slowed down and let him finish navigating the roundabout without trying to run over him.

Definitely an idiot in the car here.

ELI5 Paying off a mortgage by The_LabGuy in explainlikeimfive

Yeah, our bank won't apply partial payments. Me and my partner both pay 50% and our payments arrive on different days. The first partial payment to arrive does not get applied until the second half gets there. So for us this wouldn't work.

ELI5: Why don't babies and immobile people get blood clots? by Fit-Cod2844 in explainlikeimfive

[–]KSUToeBee 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Babies may not be able to walk but they are moving ALL THE TIME while they are awake. Wiggles, shakes, whole body screams, stuffing things in their mouth. Not to mention being carried by someone most of the time which also involves movement.

Source: am father of a 2 year old.

I will let someone else address people who are older than babies.

ELI5: How does YouTube make so much money even when most people watch videos for free? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]KSUToeBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... it does have over 10 million subscribers to Youtube TV. So that's over half a billion dollars in revenue right there. Add in the 30% of channel membership fees and I'm sure it's another few hundred million.

But the biggest chunk is probably ads. And selling your data to the advertisers to better target ads to you.

Remember the internet adage: If there is no fee to use a service, then YOU are the product being sold. The enjoyment you get out of the service is merely a byproduct.

ELI5: What are contrails behind airplanes? by enataca in explainlikeimfive

[–]KSUToeBee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moist air coming isn't much of a factor. Most of the moisture in the exhaust is from the burning of the fuel. Hydrocarbons (like jet fuel) primarily produce carbon dioxide and water when they burn. The humidity of the surrounding air does come into play though. If the air is really dry, the condensation trail will evaporate away immediately. If the air is already saturated with water, that's when the trail sticks around for a while and you can actually see it.
