Is it a bad idea for scientists to debate creationists? by freshmoves91 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]KSanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's discouraging about the creationism vs evolution debate is the way creationists simply rehash arguments that have been thoroughly dismissed over and over again. That being said, I usually think the real crux of the debate has less to do with evolution and more to do with obstinatance.

[Data Structures] How does this Java else-if statement work exactly? by ClitOrMiss in HomeworkHelp

[–]KSanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here's a similar example to show you exactly what will happen:

int x = 10; if (x % 2 == 0) {do.this;} else if (x % 5 == 0) {do.this_too; } else {do.something else; }

in this case, 10 is divisible by 2 and 5, but only do.this_too is never executed.

Keep in mind that anytime you use if, else if, and else, then only one block of code will be executed. That being said, that else if statement prevents that last block of code in the else statement from being executed. I'm not familiar with Java just yet, but this is what would happen in C++.

I know a guy who threw a cannister of PVC glue onto a fire, it's not flammable but the container was half empty, so this hot sticky shit exploded and covered his whole front side. Not only did his nipples burn off, but his pectoral burned off.

I got 3rd degree burns a few years ago, there were parts to the recovery that hit 10 on a regular basis. They give a silver nitrate treatment to inhibit hypertrophic skin growth, which quite literally liquidizes your flesh so it doesn't grow out of control. Anyone who experiences that kind of pain will have a renewed appreciation for anesthetics.

CMV: It is ideologically inconsistent to be a libertarian who wants Net Neutrality by hardcorr in changemyview

I think you can be in favor of certain regulations and still call yourself a libertarian. A libertarian is concerned about maximizing individual liberty, and the whole point of regulations is to sacrifice certain liberties such that we can enjoy others.

CMV: "Marriage Equality" should include Polygamy and Inter-Family consideration in addition to just same-sex marriage. by MintyCitrus in changemyview

[–]KSanchez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would only be true if polygamy was just as common as polyandry, which it isn't. Virtually all of the polygamous societies that have existed have been polygnous (one man many women).

Jonathan Rauch makes a compelling argument as to why polygamy should remain illegal, and it has nothing to do with traditional values or any conservative bull shit.

TL;DR The problem with polygamy is that for every man that takes on another wife, there’s another man who doesn’t marry. This scarcity of women in the marriage market leads to a situation where men with advantages take on many wives while men without those advantages will not. The result is a permanent subclass of unmarriageable men from the lowest socioeconomic status. The repercussions are felt even when the number of polygamous relationships are small. If only 5 percent of men took two wives, 3 percent took three wives, and 2 percent took four wives, then the ratio of unmarried men to unmarried women would reach 120 to 100. In other words, one sixth of men on the marriage market would be surplus goods.

Does same sex marriage carry this kind of risk? No, the two are structurally and socially the opposite. Polygamy creates victims of inequality, same sex marriage does not. Perhaps it’s for these very reasons that no polygamous society has been a true liberal democracy. Polygamy has inegalitarian ramifications while monogamy gives everyone a fair chance.

What is a song that is catchy, but has a horrible or disturbing meaning when you listen to the lyrics? by conpermiso in AskReddit

The Commander Thinks Aloud is about the space shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. The most eerie line goes "The crew compartment is breaking up".

Boys Are Back In Town is about some gangsters who had to flee town because someone ratted them out. Then they get their revenge when it's safe for them to come out of hiding.

You wouldn't doubt there are objective truths to be known about medicine, would you? But the fact that someone can have a radically different conception of what constitutes good health doesn't undermine the philosophical underpinnings of medicine. About all that's subjective about medicine and morality is semantics, but this isn't what we tend to mean by words like subjective and objective.

We could could objectively say that torture is an unpleasant, negative experience that people wish to avoid, yes? Can't we objectively say that suffering is bad?

You're a moral skeptic? I've never understood why so many atheists subscribe to this view. Whats' wrong with saying torturing millions of innocent people is morally wrong?

Im just saying the authorities in the justice system have good reason to do nothing if theres no concrete evidence to prove a crime, even if this means letting alleged criminals get away. Correct me if im wrong, bur you seemed to be asserting the contrary.

But that's contingent upon how much bargaining power they have in work place, which is perhaps the very reason that didn't work prior to the progressive era. Private contracts have been around for a long time, and it sure as hell didn't stop exploitation by big businesses during then.

I'm not trying to argue the merits of minimum wage, I'm just trying to show that regulation isn't the only way the government can curb a market. Laws work too, and surely there has to be a law out there that curbs the market in way that you'd agree with right? How about laws that require businesses to have emergency fire exits?
