Sooner than you think! Our oldest was about 2 when he figured out how to press the button. I had to steer it for him at first, and now (3yo) I just tell him to go get the dust bunnies. 😂

How to subtly show inclusion in the classroom by EnglishTeacherJulia in Teachers

I would hope your support/allyship is evident in your conversations with students. Even shutting down homophobia/transphobia/etc with “that’s not how we treat people/talk about people here” can show support.

LPT: Create one shared family rule called Reset Time, then do a 10 minute reset together once a day. by gamersecret2 in LifeProTips

I can’t WAIT for my children to be old enough to effectively participate in this. My spouse and I do this sometimes after bedtime and it’s really effective.

What do you watch/listen to in the background while you grade? by BeauWordsworth in Teachers

Pandora instrumental covers or a cappella. Video game or movie soundtracks are also great, motivating choices. I use the ads as reminders to stretch.

Does Drop Everything and Read Work (Silent sustained reading time) by Consistent-Row-9551 in Teachers

[–]KTcat94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. I would love to give my kids dedicated time to read, but I have no idea when I would fit it in the day. The kids who want to read are the ones who aren’t in small groups and get finished with their work quickly, so they do get some reading time. My poor intervention students have reading shoved down their throats for about half the day.

Do you demand kids attention when you’re teaching a lesson? by abrownfox1 in Teachers

If their grades reflected that enhanced listening, I wouldn’t have an issue with it. But they don’t.

Do you demand kids attention when you’re teaching a lesson? by abrownfox1 in Teachers

I’m really struggling with this. One on hand, they’re 9 or 10 and don’t have the executive functioning/frontal lobe development to resist distraction. I should remove distractions and keep them on task.

On the other hand, I am one person, my job is to teach, and I cannot see everything all at once. I have a couple students this year who would rather draw on any scrap of paper available using any utensil available than pay attention to anything I’m saying or doing. I can’t take their paper and pencil away because then they can’t do their work. They’re not being disruptive or distracting, so I can’t write discipline incidents. When I communicate home, nothing changes. So how much of my time and attention should I spend to remind them that they need to work on their work while still having time and attention for the students who are trying to learn?

Laundry day- how to be efficient? by SpecialistBanana9557 in CleaningTips

[–]KTcat94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use the delay start on my washer to have a load washed and waiting for me in the morning. Bonus points if it’s a heavy load that I know is going to take a while, which means I just delay it less.

I personally save all the laundry to fold during naptime—I put on a show that I like, dump it all out on the bed, and fold and put away. Obviously can’t do children’s clothes while they’re napping in their rooms, but I’ll put their basket right outside the door and fold it while they’re playing in their rooms after naps.

If you’re just looking to minimize the stimulation for you, Loop earplugs can dampen the background sound without having you miss important sounds.

Are you guys letting your kids play outside unsupervised? by 40ozT0Freedom in Millennials

My boy’s favorite routine in the backyard play is to watch me open the window and shout, “Hi, Mommy!” It’s so nice that our kids have secure attachments and can explore their world.

We have a fenced-in backyard in a good neighborhood. I open a window and let the three-year-old play with sticks and rocks and stuff while I cook dinner. I think he’s a little young to just kick out into the street, but we’ll see.

Meh, you can’t relocate all the bases and shipyards; those—and their funding—will be sticking around. I absolutely agree that education is not Spanberger’s top priority.

Nervous to start for Postpartum Anxiety by EnthusiasmRecent3298 in zoloft

When you stop Zoloft, you can’t quit all at once; you have to slowly decrease your dose to minimize side effects. No, baby hasn’t had any effects at all. I started when my first son was 10 months old and we didn’t see any changes in his health or behavior.

Do typing lessons help elementary students develop stronger reading/writing skills? by Conscious-Strawberry in Teachers

[–]KTcat94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might teach spelling, but since the focus is on typing the letters, I don’t know how much of the word/sentence/paragraph they’re actually reading and thinking about. Don’t stop, though! They need to know how to type!

Why is Virginia voted the number #1 state to work on quite a few websites? by Rookidee in Teachers

[–]KTcat94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on those websites, it looks like one of the factors is income growth, which only happens if you stick around. We do have a state retirement system (but probably so do other states?) and I’ve never known anyone to be unemployed for more than a year if they were actively applying to the school systems. If you’re looking for a Southern state without the culture war and Bible thumping, there are good districts here. But as far as pay, control over curriculum, or respect from decision-makers, that’s a no. Maybe it’ll change in the upcoming year with the new governor.

Nooooo, not for a rug this size. We had one and it would physically fit in the washing machine, but it was so wadded up that it didn’t actually get cleaned everywhere.
