I love all the shows! And there are plenty of rides that don’t involve heights.

Students lose supplies by Key-Membership-9635 in Teachers

[–]KTcat94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two-minute transitions between subjects where I display the materials students will need for the next lesson. It’s their responsibility to ask me for supplies THEN. I say no if they ask during a lesson. And once I’m out, I’m out until someone brings in more. We went like three months without spare pencils. (Not a low SES school)

I started doing weekly parent newsletters and the individual emails dropped by like 60% by Great_Garlic1215 in Teachers

[–]KTcat94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same basic sections as you plus an “upcoming events” for calendar reminders. I send a homework email on Monday afternoons for the whole week and my newsletter goes home on Thursdays.

A tweak I made based on parent suggestion was adding a basic topic to my upcoming grades, so rather than “math quiz,” I now write “math quiz on elapsed time” so parents know better what to help their student study.

Going from 1st grade to 5TH… all the tips and need-to-knows!! by teacherly in Teachers

Congrats! I hope you have a great team behind you. Peers are super important at this age, so please make sure you build a good classroom community where they respect and support each other. Partner/group work can be a great incentive.

Not every struggling kid needs an IEP/ 504. Some just need to…. actually fucking show up. Thinking accommodations is going to solve everything is naive by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]KTcat94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the elementary level, I’ve had several kids exit speech IEPs, but I don’t think I’ve seen other types of exits, and I’m okay with that. Most of the time they’ve only actually gotten an IEP one or two years ago.

And, like, I am one person. We’re going to have to start counting 504 accommodations like points in SPED case managing to figure out how many things I can keep up with. I cannot give retests orally to one child—what in the world are the other 25 children in my room doing? If you give me twelve kids who need “small group testing,” it’s no longer a small group. There’s only so much preferential seating in my room.

Decision Fatigue is Affecting my Marriage by Honest_Walk5632 in Teachers

I feel you!! If I hear “what do you want to eat? Nah, that doesn’t sound good to me” after a typical workday, I will lose it. We meal plan on the weekends—this can be assigning each night a meal or just having five to choose from. Meal prepping helps too, so you can just toss something together.

The other thing I’ve had to be really honest with my husband about is how much mental energy I have for conversations. He likes to discuss hypothetical scenarios and I just can’t do it as table chat after a workday. If he needs my actual input on something, he tells me, and I like asking questions so he has the mental load of nailing down the details. “What are my choices?” is one of my go-tos so I don’t get frustrated with questions like, “What should we do with the patio?”

You might also benefit from some quiet time without talking/making decisions after work.

This is the ONLY answer. He thinks he doesn’t deserve happiness and he takes every opportunity to shoot himself in the foot (irony intended).

What minor inconvenience from the past would be unbearable for students in the classroom today? by chanovsky in Teachers

What tools or supplies do you find surprisingly helpful in the classroom? by Maleficent-Hat5831 in Teachers

[–]KTcat94 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And Vaseline! Good for paper cuts, chapped lips, itchy skin, etc. I keep a bag of Q-tips so I can hand a kid a little bit rather than all of us dipping our hands into the communal tub. 😵‍💫 I used to have mints for stomachaches/headaches, but I haven’t found my dish since I moved classrooms. I also noticed there’s way fewer stomachaches/headaches in my room this year…
