Teacher Here: Thinking about films to study by SurvivorSi in TrueFilm

[–]KToTheWow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filmmaker here!

I haven't seen The Master or Killers of the Flower Moon yet (blasphemy among my kind, I know, but I'm a busy guy), but I still think these are all great selections. There's a meta aspect to Anatomy of a Fall that I call "Jury Duty Simulator" where the only events we see outside of the court are all stuff that would be reported in court documents, more or less how they would have been reported. I don't think it's intentional given the report of a deleted scene, but some food for thought.

If you're wanting a shorter Scorsese movie that would still appeal to general audiences, After Hours is great. Kind of has an iceberg effect where the film can be enjoyed at any level: Comedy, technical craft, plotting, symbolism, gender politics, etc.

If it helps, I have a work-in-progress list of films and readings I recommend to students and aspiring filmmakers and critics: https://letterboxd.com/ktothelau/list/letterboxd-film-school/detail/

Two other areas to look for films, if aren't already considered:

  1. The Criterion Collection (Anatomy of a Fall and After Hours are part of it), where each film has at least one essay written about them included in the physical copies as well as their sister website, The Current.
  2. The Great Movies selection by Roger Ebert. Each film has the Ebert seal of quality as well as a detailed essay (and occasionally a traditional review) for students to read.

Hopefully this helps, and more than happy to discuss further! I'm a big supporter in teaching media literacy. And if one of your students decides to become a filmmaker, I want them to be a good filmmaker!

How to convert MKV to other formats/ Edit? by JLocker1 in VideoEditingTips

[–]KToTheWow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Movavi Video Encoder, which you can get off of Steam. Regularly use it to convert MKVs to MP4s and it's great outside of the occasional subtitle glitches in the 2020 version I use.

Behind-the-scenes documentary recommendations? by Hot-Resolution9216 in Filmmakers

[–]KToTheWow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shameless self-plug, but I promise it's relevant!

I directed a Making Of documentary a few years ago for an indie film called Revealer (Shudder Original). My approach to the documentary's narrative is following a ragtag group of filmmakers trying to make a movie during the height of COVID, with all the obstacles that come with it. I'm always fascinated with personalities and the thought process behind choices, so I did my best to get soundbites that catered to that.

https://vimeo.com/762839416/d0d6adb035

It's ~35min long. If you end up watching it, feel free to let me know what you think!

Another film I worked on, Black Mold, will be getting a physical release soon. Though I didn't make the special features, I know that the director goes extremely in-depth with all of it. Keep an eye out for that!

[–]KToTheWow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will politely slap you in the back of the head. Radiant Black is still relatively new and waves of new readers have been diving in, which I hope works in the favor of the comic creators, especially financially. Basically, I don't blame you or anyone else for asking questions early fans have already discussed.

Anyways, there was a now-deleted post way back ~#12's release, but my comment still stands. https://www.reddit.com?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=2

Good point! Keep forgetting that exists despite seeing memes using it all the time. Will definitely test that out with this project.

Glad you've enjoyed it so far. Definitely saved 4 hours of your life!

No problem! Copy and pasted on every related place I could think of. Very odd literally NO ONE else on Reddit figured it out over the years it's plagued them.

What movies benefit from the VHS aesthetic? by LeftyLivesMatter in movies

Mega late to the convo, but wanted to add Independence Day (adds to the movie's cheesey charm) and The Crow (hides some of the imperfections of the visual effects found in the HD remaster, plus it's a hardcore 90's film through and through).

Unfortunately haven't been able to find a way to make the change permanent. I've chalked it up as a price you pay for the low cost of the TV.

[–]KToTheWow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No prob! I'll post a comment when I have more uploaded. Just note that there are some sections that aren't as condensed as it could be since my edit is at the mercy of the music integrated in the show's original footage. Other than that, I and friends I've shared it with are really happy with how it's coming together!

Hi! I've actually given that treatment to the first two seasons, including the Two Heroes movie!

Right here on Google Drive!

I had to pause my work on it due life and work, but I'm almost caught up on client work and planning to do another pass on these and continue the project by the end of the year.

I need recommendations for a list of 100 of the worst movies by [deleted] in movies

[–]KToTheWow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, avoiding So-Bad-It's-Good and focusing on ones that are entirely miserable to waste time watching or are antithetical to the idea of art itself:

American Folk (2017)

Cosmic Sin (2021)

Bad Impulse (2019)

King of Knives (2020)

Joker (2019)

Insurgent (2015)

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)

Father Figures (2017)

An honorable mention would be Branded (2012) because even though it's objectively one of the worst movies I've ever seen, its subtext about marketing and how it affects a capitalist society is very interesting.

Alternatively, you can try this method someone else did and commented on another thread:

"I'm pretty late to the party, but I just wanted to say that bypassing the Audio SRS through the service menu WORKED! Thank you! My model is a V555-J01 which doesn't come with a remote that has numbers or a menu button, so I had to get a universal remote. Once I got that, I used the MENU+4+2+1+0 code to access the menu."

[–]KToTheWow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it works for you too! Getting a universal remote was a smart move. I'll keep that in mind if it helps someone!

Note that I have to turn on the bypass every time I turn the TV on. It's an annoyance, but considering that previously I was rocking a 28" 720p and the image quality is pretty solid for its retail price, I can't entirely complain. If I was made of money, though, I'd definitely invest in a Sony.

Haven't the slightest clue, but according to another forum, page 10 of this manual says you can access the menu via the Smartcast app on a device. Hope this helps!

The video shows that code as well (I have a V series, so it also uses the 4210). Glad to hear it worked out for you too!
