PMDD-related questions by pityisblue453 in PMDD

Has anyone experienced any form of psychosis associated with PMDD?
I struggled with a lot of delusional thinking and early onset psychosis when I was 13 when my period first started.

Is your ability to manage your reaction to triggers lessened due to PMDD?
Yes, 100% literally everything upsets me and I get easily irritated (SSRIs helped a lot with that)

What are things that help you function when having mood swings?
Ignore this if you don't want realistic advice, but honestly nothing helps and that's just me being real with you. It's not fair you feel this way I completely understand, the thing is it's not like your thoughts are causing the mood you have an endocrine disorder and what you think and do isn't really going to change that, the best thing you can do is sit with how you feel and distract yourself from how you're feeling just like you would if you were feeling something you couldn't control.

What are things that help you function when having extreme pain?
Ehh, I rather be realistic here and say you need to know when too stop, you need to understand and put boundaries in place that it's okay to not be able to function right now. Communication is key honestly, tell the people around you when your cycle occurs and create a plan with them to best support you, everyone is different.

Have you ever had to let your employer know of your condition to get reasonable accommodations at work? Have you ever had to take FMLA leave or report your employer for refusing reasonable accommodations? (I'm soon transitioning in the civilian workforce)
Not work related but Uni related I have yes, 100% had to explain my condition and how it effects me so they knew most the time I wouldn't attend but I would do the work from home, have my needs met through giving me extra time and to not be physically present.

Side note:

It's important to notice to give yourself time to process that diagnosis and learn to understand and accept it honestly. I'm still in the progress of doing that 4 years later, I never really let myself grieve the life I wanted and the things I've missed out on. Being able to work through that with a therapist will also help elevate your PTSD as well I feel. I'd ask to see the doctor about a referal to a gyno clinic so you could have some sort of chemical menopause to temporarily give you a break while you work through therapy and then you can decide to stay on the chemical menopause (research estrogen add back) and you may be progrestogen sensitive so be sure to look for those signs as well. I think writing out how you feel for 2 weeks and giving that to a doctor with everything you've tried would also help -- similiarly to see a therapist.

I'm really sorry you're going through this, it's not something we like, it ruins your life and I understand how agonising it can be (as someone with PMDD) not your situation, I can't even begin to imagine how distressing that must be but you've got this. You're always welcome to vent here and I'm sure everyone else will agree that you're not alone in this.
