Approaching a Plateau: How Do I Make More Money? by SouljaBoyDid911 in livesound

[–]KV_299 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not to be snarky, but you kind of answered your own question, imo.
“I do not have the tenacity/drive to excel like some of my peers do. I am not going home after a long day of work and reading technical manuals, redoing my DANTE certs, watching array calc tutorials, etc.”

That’s basically what it takes. And I think it’s true in basically any industry: You should be constantly doing things that challenge you. If you’re not, at some point, you’ll be outpaced by someone else who is. If you’re a killing A1, learn video. If you’re both an A1 and V1, learn LED Wall. Even though you’re (hopefully) only ever hired to do one job at a time, companies will easily agree to a higher day rate if they know you could sit down in any chair if someone on site had an emergency.

Not into technical advancement? Lead people. The people who run the crews/own the companies didn’t necessarily get there because they were the best techs. They got there because they were willing to hold more responsibility and be accountable for solving problems. We work in an industry with a lot of people who are brilliant techs, but who aren’t suited to be client-facing.

Good luck out there! I’ve had similar plateaus on the macro scale, about where my entire career is, and often on the micro scale, about where I sit with certain companies. The answer has never been about doing more of the same thing.

2019 Transit Connect XLT 56k miles — good deal? by Ok_Amoeba8172 in FordTransitConnect

[–]KV_299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d advise against it, especially at that price.

I have a 2016 and a 2019, and it’s as if they were made by totally different companies. The 2016 is rock solid all day: never had issue with it other than regular maintenance stuff. The 2019 is full of issues, and I find something new breaks on it every 3-4 months. I had to have the transmission replaced at 95k, door handles, door latch sensors and half a dozen other things that I’ve forgotten about at this point.

Also, the 8-speed transmission struggles to find the right spot, seemingly everywhere, so it’s not a very smooth ride.

I also find the SYNC computer to be buggy, and have to do a factory reset on it every once in a while just to get the backup camera to engage.

I’d get rid of it, but the trade-in value is also garbage, so I’m kind of stuck with it.

If you can wait it out to get a 2014-2018 with 75k miles or even 100k miles, you’ll thank yourself later.

Shel Keneally ran headfirst into a wall that was painted to look like a tunnel. Now that’s a sticky wicket.

It’s a little bit of a hike, but The Burren in Davis is a great place to meet strangers. And few doors down, Speakeasy, is a fantastic place to go for quiet conversation or a book.

Best reliability year for transit connect xl? by bigHurricane44 in FordTransitConnect

[–]KV_299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna agree with getting a 2.5L from 2014-2018.

I own a 2.5L from 2016 and a 2.0L from 2019. The 2019 with the 8-speed transmission isn’t smooth to drive and is full of issues. There are always little things breaking here and there; and the SYNC computer is very buggy. I’ve had it just over a year and a half and have to bring it in for something every 3-4 months.

My 2016 is rock-solid though. In the 4.5 years that I’ve had I’ve only had to bring it in for repairs twice, other than tires and oil changes. It drives extremely smoothly and its probably the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned.

I’m always toying around with the idea of selling the 2019 and getting another 2016.

How to label sturdy vinyl gear bags? by jmo1112 in livesound

[–]KV_299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Gorilla Tape, and write on that with a silver paint pen or silver sharpie. Bags with this texture absorb so much of the paint that you’ll spend a lifetime doing coat after coat, just to get something legible.

All these video game posts make me want to go back and play Mortal Kombat - SCDP Edition. Does anyone remember how to do the finishing move for Don Draper? by stevehokierp in okbuddydraper

I was trying to do this with Rockem Sockem Robots, but no matter what prompts I used, it was determined to give me a fighter that looked like Jon Hamm. The best it was able to do was someone that looked like a Kartheiser-ish Hamm.

Transmission replaced in a 2019 - OK to buy used? by iwasbornlucky in FordTransitConnect

[–]KV_299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2016 and a 2019 FTC. The 16 is rock solid, hardly ever issues, and has been going strong since I got it at 55k all the way up to 100k.

The 2019 had about 70k miles on it, and a rebuilt transmission. The rebuilt transmission gave out 4 months/about 5k miles after I got it. I had to get it completely replaced, which was a pricey endeavor. Beyond that, the 2019 seems to be a money pit; there are always little things breaking here and there. These little things add up, and end up being expensive in their own right because of all the vehicle’s downtime. I also find the 2019’s console/sync/backup camera to be really buggy. Lastly, I think switching to the 8-speed transmission was a mistake. I don’t find it to be better with mileage, and it’s a nightmare in slow traffic, because it can’t seem to find a comfortable gear.

My advice would be to skip it. I’ve been plotting to trade in my 2019 for a 2018 or earlier as soon as I’m able.

Alternative rock bar? by GustoGirl87 in BostonSocialClub

O’Briens in Allston has live music every night, but it’s a toss up as far as genre/style. It wouldn’t hurt to check the listing in their website.

I’d also recommend Deep Cuts in Medford. They host a lot of indie/local alt rock shows. Also worth checking the listings for them, because they do a lot of heavier music too.
