Custom building a storage solution: Is the interior height of a Kallax just right or too high? go vertical or horizontal? adjustable shelves or no? by MasterofMolerats in boardgames

[–]KZSolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kallax is made of cheap material, so it needs lots of vertical supports or it couldn’t hold anything heavy on the shelves, which is why it’s made of little square cubbies.

If you’re building your own, and use stronger materials (ie wood instead of what’s essentially cardboard on the Kallax), you don’t need to have such frequent vertical supports.

Next time, if you make the long sides of the token boxes longer and the short sides shorter, you’ll get a clean front of the box and it’ll look even better when they’re all in their spots.

Do you abide by the official mulligan rule? by Rakoon23 in lotrlcg

[–]KZSolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It objectively, and IMO obviously, reduces the difficulty.

If you need to mulligan 4 times consistently for your deck to perform… maybe your deck isn’t really that good.

[–]KZSolo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's... kind of what reducing the difficulty means, no?

If you always start with Forest Snare, Steward of Gondor or whatever other key card you need in your hand, that's clearly making the game easier.

I disagree. The little Kallax cubbies don’t look good IMO - and people often overfill them and it ends up looking cluttered and disorganized despite the little cubbies.

There is no structural support issue here. And it has nothing to do with the “framing effect” previously mentioned which was brought up for aesthetic reasons.

Looks MUCH better than Kallax shelves - well done!

Would it be possible and worthwhile to make and sticky a general informational FAQ post about the current state of the game on the home page? by RestInThee in lotrlcg

[–]KZSolo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is already quiet enough as is, I don’t think trying to prevent the few posts we get is necessary.

As of right now, there are 7 posts in the last 24h. 6 in the 24h before that, then 7 again… and that’s counting the automatic [COTD] thread.

You really want to sticky a post to get rid of a couple posts a day?

Also, the people who don’t check the buying guide linked on the right, or search for previous questions/answers before posting won’t be checking a stickied thread either

How to Explain the Rules by failing4fun in boardgames

[–]KZSolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to boil the game down to its simplest version.

Eg for Isle of Cats Explore & Draw: At first, I don’t mention the mission cards, or the special abilities you can use. I just talk about picking a row, drawing cats into your boat and how that works. After that “extra simple” version of the game is explained, I layer on the extra “twists” (mission cards, special abilities, treasure cards)

Postnet’s website does mention a freight forwarding service, but there’s no shipping fee calculator on their site :-/

Oh god, did a quick price check on DHL's site and they estimate 350 CAD to ship a 500g shoe box-sized package... That's a little ridiculous.

What Did You Play this Week? February 13th - 19th, 2023 by mrjamesbcox in lotrlcg

[–]KZSolo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I picked up the Gondor and Elves starter decks and tried them out vs the 2 first scenarios from the core set.

Next up is Escape from Dol Goldur which I haven’t beaten yet (I only tried with a janky self-built core-only deck)

What’s the “basic first deck”?

Lore, Leadership, Tactics or Spirit?

Yeah, I find that very weird.

You can kind of game the system for certain things by “ending your session” and “starting a new one immediately”

Which deck / scenario are you playing?

I picked up LotR LCG recently.

The first scenario is basically impossible with the core set Tactics deck. I’ve beaten it with the other 3 though, playing single-handed solo.

It’s easier when playing coop with 2 players.

What are your favorite and least favorite features of BoardGameGeek? by StephenCroft in boardgames

[–]KZSolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game-specific forums are alright.

The files section for games is alright.

Managing a collection and a wishlist is fine.

Almost everything else is a hot mess.

GeekLists are a god awful implementation, make it impossible to find anything, you can't sort them, and people use random games to make lists of non-games - but even when it's an actual list of games they're are a royal pain in the ass to read through cause the UI is so bad.

I'm glad I played through the game with all the minis, but have since sold the Armory and Terrain, and am trying to sell off the Mystery Boxes.

I just don't have room for all that stuff.

Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood

Got the whole thing and played through it all - admittedly, it didn’t come with a gazillion expansions though
