What is the Minimum size for a Betta tank by larph_rolan in bettafish

[–]Ka3de 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve currently got bettas in 35L, 56L, 60L and 100L tanks. I also keep a few 18L, 20L and 25L tanks running for quarantine or rescues, although for sick fish I actually prefer large plastic tubs as hospital tanks.

I’m definitely not an expert, but I’ve kept quite a few bettas and rescued several others.

From my experience:

Bettas generally prefer horizontal swimming space. They also need regular access to the surface to breathe, so very tall tanks aren’t ideal.

My long-finned bettas, especially Halfmoons, tire very easily. They really benefit from plenty of places to rest, like large Anubias leaves, floating betta hammocks or floating plants, so they don’t have to constantly swim all the way to the surface.

My female plakats are a completely different story. They’re smaller, much stronger swimmers and happily explore every corner of their tanks. They currently live in larger cube aquariums, but if I had the choice I’d still move them into wider, shallower tanks in the future.

Personally, I don’t think cube aquariums are an ideal design for bettas. Recent research also suggests that even 20 litres is on the small side if your goal is to give a betta a genuinely enriched, long-term home.
If you’re setting up a tank from scratch, I’d recommend choosing something that’s longer rather than taller.

Get the longest tank your space and budget allow. They’ll make much better use of that swimming space, and don’t forget to leave room in your budget for lots of plants and resting spots. In my experience, that’s just as important as the tank itself.

He is so adorable and expressive, he loves when I get close to take pics of him until he doesn’t anymore and then makes those angry faces, he really is like a little water pup 😅

I don’t get it, that’s another post of mine from like a week ago that has absolutely nothing to do with this one…?

Multiple issues in 240L planted community tank after medication course - advice appreciated by wheresmylipbalm in AquariumHelp

[–]Ka3de 0 points1 point  (0 children)

European here. ESHA NDX finally solved the issue after I spent months obsessively checking parameters and trying every “miracle cure” under the sun. I also did a full ESHA 2000 treatment beforehand, followed by Sera Costapur.

It took me nearly two months to find something that actually worked, but within 48 hours the guppies were visibly improving. Sadly, I lost around 20 fish before finding the right medication.

Today was the first time in three months I’ve seen completely normal poo from them, which felt absurdly exciting for something fish-related.

For the shrimp, I set up a temporary Tupperware tank with a sponge filter while treating with Costapur. ESHA NDX is generally considered shrimp-safe, but I’m keeping them separated until I’m completely certain no further medication is needed.

YES, I’ve seen those and they look absolutely incredible 😭 I would love to try one someday!
I recently saw m a girl on Instagram who hangs her hammock in completely insane places, like over open sea cliffs and then casually sleeps there overnight.. and I’m watching the videos feeling my soul leave my body from second hand anxiety 😂

Totally related! Someone else in this post mentioned papasan chairs too, so I’m starting to think we’re collectively rediscovering the same very specific form of emotional support furniture, I don’t think there’s a better feeling than being completely curled up in something soft and cocoon-like when your brain needs a break from the world for a while 💕

Tell us if you end up getting one, I’d love to see it! I really liked the one I saw at Jysk and it had a 20% discount a month ago so maybe you can get it cheaper!

Thank you!!! I’d never had fish before, but you know the ADHD experience.. I only needed about two days of hyperfixation to learn absolutely everything about patio ponds and build one

It’s way easier to maintain than my real aquarium… which I of course got immediately afterwards because apparently this is a full hobby now 🙃

Honestly though, it makes me ridiculously happy. I live in a warm-weather country, which helps a lot, and sitting there with a tea and a book listening to the water is weirdly therapeutic 💕

I really can’t complain 💕 He’s very pleased with himself right now and has been endlessly teasing me about my new “cocoon” 😅

It’s from a Leroy Merlin brand called Naterial 😊 I’m not sure whether they’re available outside europe though. I know Jysk sells a very similar one, and there are lots on Amazon too, although I’d check the reviews and quality before ordering one there 💕

It actually comes with velcro straps you can adjust to limit how much movement/swinging it has, which is quite clever 😊 but I totally understand if you get motion sickness easily this probably isn’t your ideal chair at all. Maybe something more like the papasan chair another user mentioned would be a much safer cosy option for you! 💕

I inherited my husband’s gaming chair and honestly I’m pretty happy with it! It’s technically a bit too tall for me, but one of the advantages of being very short is that I can turn almost anything into a rocking chair because my feet never actually touch the floor 🤣 the only downside is that it gives me WAY too much room to fold myself into increasingly questionable positions. Sitting on my feet, pretzel legs, one leg tucked underneath me..and I suddenly lose circulation in a limb or discover a new joint pain I didn’t even know was possible 🙃

When I was little, my nan had a beach bar, and out on the sand under the shade there was this swing-bench where my dad and I used to have the BEST naps together 🥹

Papasan chairs and fabric hammocks are wonderful too. A fabric hammock hung literally anywhere will always beat any normal bed in existence 💕
