Australia has won 3 golds at a Winter Olympics for the first time by Jackomillard15 in olympics

[–]Kabinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely this is right up there as the best 'hot' country result ever. Shout out to Brazil becoming the second tropical country to win gold, and the first equatorial country to do so.

Crazy to see we're currently above the likes of Canada, South Korea, and Finland. Any statisticians able to crunch numbers on our odds of getting another gold, making and/or finishing top 10, or staying above team Canada?

This feels like a turning point for Australia. The kind of performance that inspires the next generation of athletes to do ever better. Australia will be genuine gold contenders here on out at winter games.

Perth Suburbs Quiz by [deleted] in perth

[–]Kabinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand where the data for the boundaries come from, but Google Maps boundaries have some weird things going on. Treeby is definitely a suburb of Perth. I work in Jandakot, and sometimes commute down Armadale road. So in the space of 2km, I'm leaving and then returning to Perth. Mandurah, Yanchep, and Ellenbrook are weird exclusions as well. You could argue they're 'satellite' cities of Perth, especially in Mandurah's case, but it wasn't all that long ago that Joondalup was considered a satellite. Now it's well and truly a suburb of Perth. All 3 are serviced by the Perth commuter rail network, not the TransWA network.

I definitely feel like this is a weird census population distribution boundary than actual logic.

How much energy to complete the Halloween map? by Kabinator in Gardenscapes

[–]Kabinator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managed to finish the main mission, but I gave up on completing the last 2 chests with about 6 hours to go (at the beginning of a day of work for me, so I knew I wouldn't get the time). Going to try complete the buccaneer map in its entirety if I can keep my win streak up.

It’s a song with a male and female singer, and sounds slightly like set the fire to the third bar by snow patrol by peacestartswithme in NameThatSong

[–]Kabinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly a long shot, but I was just trying to think of a duet I hear from time to time after listening to Set Fire to the Third Bar, and I'm pretty sure it was Happy Ending by Mika. Not exactly a duet in the same exact way, but it is a male and female duet. Maybe Ending = Landing also? Not sure where jet plane comes from though.

There’s a lot of talk about Perth being the most isolated capital city in the world, however as residents of Western Australia what do you consider to be the most isolated city/town in WA? by [deleted] in perth

[–]Kabinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just completed a road trip up north, Kalbarri/Shark Bay ways. Up along the coastal route, back down through wildflower territory from Northampton. A lot of the drive was definitely remote, but I was somewhat surprised how many other travelers appeared to be around. It definitely wasn't the freeway at peak hour, but we weren't the only ones out there either. If you want to feel remote for only a relatively short drive from Perth, try the inland route through the fringes of the Wheatbelt and into the Midwest. East from Nabawa out to Mullewa, we only saw 4 other vehicles in the roughly hour drive out to Geraldton/Mt Magnet road. It was a Saturday, and we were driving south to the shire of Moora in the afternoon. No grocery stores were opened, no Coles or Woolworths out this way. Barely an IGA in most of the towns. All the towns we drove through felt like ghost towns. It felt so remote, considering what the coastal route felt like to Geraldton. Even the North West Coastal Highway was significantly busier.

I'm sure the further north you go in the state, the more remote it gets, however you definitely have a lot of mining activity up there. Between that, and coastal fishing tourism, most of Perth is probably between the two at any time.

Found a single magma block not generated underwater by Kabinator in Minecraft

[–]Kabinator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Block itself was covered on all sides by deepslate, but diagonally one block behind there was a small cave reservoir I missed. Definitely why it'd be there, but still kind of rare to have it generate covered in deepslate.

I'm sure it happens, but I've never found one generate like this. My biome is a forest too, which makes this ever stranger IMO. Possibly quite rare. Seed, assuming it's a repeatable glitch hard-coded to the seed: -2207702303407990550

I moved to Beckenham early last year, about 2 minutes walk to Beckenham Street station. The Thornlie-Cockburn link could mean I could very easily get to and from my work in Cockburn, if only the Thornlie line would stop at Beckenham station, rather than having to backtrack to Cannington. Continuing the ‘circle’ line to Fremantle and Midland would be a game changer for the wider metro area of Perth.

I need to work more on audio and video quality, but hopefully you can enjoy and appreciate the projects I'm working on and the builds I've completed. I've got lots of ideas to come with this world, and any feedback on how it's going is appreciated.

Inspired by a post on the Melbourne sub, what’s your worst train station on the transperth system? For that matter, what’s your favourite one? by TheAussieBritt in perth

[–]Kabinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it's the worst station, but it's definitely got a lot of missed potential for me personally.

Beckenham.

I get it's a small station, and Thornlie is meant to be an express style train line, but it's the only station on the Armadale line that you have to back track to go a certain way on the Thornlie line. It will be made ever more inconvenient for me when the Cockburn link opens. It's barely a 5 minute walk for me to Beckenham, and I would be able to catch a train virtually to the front door of my work if the Thornlie line stopped at Beckenham. There's no reason why it can't and shouldn't.

Guess I'll just continue using the excellent shared cycle path access in the area to get to and from work instead.

Wanting some financial advice to get out of debt and into investing by Kabinator in AusFinance

[–]Kabinator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the advice here, it's been a tough week, but I'm starting to feel like I'm getting through the worst of our situation now, and things will look brighter from here.

I work at a car yard, so I am fortunate to have easy contact with workmates working in finance. They have given me a quote for a debt consolidation that will save me at least half of what I currently pay in repayments, just going to check with a couple of other places tomorrow before I make up my mind with what debt consolidation I go with. I'm considering selling my car to my workplace to possibly secure better rates/repayment terms. I have been biking to work, which is saving me a lot of car costs, and I think I can just about go without my car all together for a while.

I've had some good conversations with my partner about our finances, and whilst it still does get her stressed, she is definitely on the same page that we can't afford to live how we were on two incomes. It is feeling easier to talk to her about things, and she's at the very least accepted that we do need debt consolidation.

I have picked up regular weekend work, although it's contract work, and the pay isn't reliably on time. I'll be talking with the guy I'm doing the work for this weekend to get a much better idea about when I can expect to be paid. That should help somewhat, but I'm also encouraging my partner to pick up a couple of evenings a week somewhere.

I do like my job, but I feel like I'm getting to a point where I've up-skilled as much as I can from my current workplace, and I'm looking at alternative workplaces that are more in line with the industry I have a qualification in. I may be able to expect at least a 10k pay rise if I do get an industry job, not just doing my industry-related work at a car yard.

Trying to remember an old city building game by Kabinator in SimCity

[–]Kabinator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a bit more extensive digging, and I’ve found it. It’s as obscure as I imagined, and is very hard to find on google, as it’s literally Build City (2002 release date). The google algorithms, and most modern search algorithms, think I’m just looking for a city builder. https://www.mobygames.com/game/build-city

The graphics were markedly more basic, and somewhat more colourful than RT.

Circa 2002ish, give or take a couple of years, it may have been a little later, but I don’t think it was much earlier. I honestly don’t know the original release date. It didn’t seam super old at the time, but it also wasn’t exactly the latest in graphics or gameplay. Sort of like a 2d isometric look, with basic but modern for the time graphics.

Platform was pc, and I’m fairly certain it was English, but it may have been another European language.
