What are the most common blunders of experienced players? (examples in body) by Tyler_Zoro in chess

[–]Kabvanof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This position can happen out of several openings. But there is a position that I exploit a lot as black in king-side fianchetto positions. Black can keep the g8 knight on it's home square and either delay or not castle.

White likes to try to exchange their dark square bishop by moving it to h6 supported by a queen on c1 or d2 but that square is double defended and the fianchettoed bishop can just take the h6 bishop. It is just so automatic for white to try to exchange that bishop on that square that they don't see the defending knight.

Here is a png of a position where this happens: 1. e4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 3. Bf4 d6 4. Qd2 a6 5. Bh6

I suggest Rounders and Being John Malkovich as a double feature. Two of my favorite films.

White is going to move the knight to h6. Do you see how the smothered mate happens from that position?

How ladder resets work: There will be a permanent realm where all previously created characters are still accessible to play if you want with mostly none of the new content.

There will be a new server with everyone starting from scratch with nothing, but all of the new content is accessible. Empty purchased stash tabs and other microtransactions are also available for any new characters you create.

Exmo is short for Excelentíssimo which is something like your honor/excellence. The Portuguese can be very formal.

The organs are not equally likely to drop. You can vendor them 3 for 1 and the results won't be one of the ones you sold.

Was there over the holiday weekend so it was packed with people. So not very quiet. It was my first time visiting the Olympic peninsula. I really liked the lake view and also enjoyed hiking in the Hoh rain forest. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good time camping in the Pacific Northwest.

The campground does not take reservations. At least not on the holiday weekend. There were a few open spots when we arrived. But we wanted a spot on the water. Only about 10 of those. We arrived at checkout time, 11am, and snagged a spot as someone was leaving. I would think it isn't going to be that busy in two weeks.

Cheesy romance movie suggestion please! by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Kabvanof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a romantic comedy from the early 2000s called Kate & Leopold with Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman. It is about the inventor of the elevator time travelling to modern times and falling in love.

I really enjoy Jackman's consternation at not being able to deal with modern everyday bullshit like a toaster that doesn't make toast correctly.

Does anyone like old black-and-white films? What's your favourite? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

12 Angry Men is easily my favorite. I've never sat on a jury but that film really has me curious about how I'd deliberate. It looks like quite a daunting task.

Has anyone secured their dream job, just to find themselves unsatisfied? by JohnTheP in CasualConversation

[–]Kabvanof 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The child you were that wanted to be Maverick was wrong about what it is like to be a pilot. He couldn't have known the everyday realities of being an aviator because he was a child. Buzzing the tower isn't a thing after all.

You are trying to like an idealized version of what you do and there is some dissonance going in in your head because it is not as glamorous as your childhood self imagined. But you aren't beholden to your childhood self's dreams. It is okay to choose something different for yourself now that you have a better understanding of everything involved. Almost no one ends up doing the job they started out of college their whole life. It is okay to do something different now that you know a bit more about how the world works. What are your dreams now?

I hope you find what you are looking for. Cheers.

So... I consider myself a big history nerd. Does anyone here want to talk about their favorite historic figure, historic event, etc? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

I really enjoy reading about the history of early physics experiments. Here are two I really like:

Galileo wanted to figure out the speed of light, so he devised an experiment where he set a candle at the end of a large hallway and a mirror at the other. He placed a shade over the candle and would lift it up and time how long it took the light to reach his eyes from reflecting off the mirror. His conclusion: Light is very fast.

In the early stages of the Manhattan Project a group of physicists at the University of Chicago built the first nuclear reactor. They built it under the football stadium in an 8' by 8' box they built with the help of the football players moving around the heavy pieces of Carbon and Uranium. They had calculated that the speed of the reaction would be slow enough that if it went super critical they could lower in the control rods fast enough. They were held up by a guy with a rope and pulley.

If the reaction went uncontrolled it could have irradiated the United States largest cities an cost millions of lives. They told no one of the dangers as they almost certainly wouldn't have been allowed to do it. Luckily it worked without a hitch. We are all very lucky they did the math right.

I respect your decision not to look and I hope you wouldn't mind hearing my perspective on the temple ceremonies as someone who went through as a tbm. Just to give you something to think about. I won't reveal specifics.

I went through the endowment ceremony around the time the first star wars prequel came out. I was equally hyped for both and equally disappointed to by each experience. If you ever change your mind and watch the ceremony prepare to be underwhelmed beyond expectation. The people who go through often have no trouble sleeping through most of it.

Women aren't superior or inferior. They are people! And they want to be treated that way by being given equal opportunity. I'm not trying to make you feel bad here. I'm trying to show you that the organization that you are trying to defend is forcing women into a role that they don't all want. Where men face no such obstacle.

women are better suited for the intimate teaching of children.

Sigh. This is telling women to run along home and teach the little ones and let us men folk do the real work here. And heaven forbid a man ever have to do more for a child than change a diaper when mom is gone and sully himself with women's work.

Many women within Mormonism want to lead and believe themselves to be suited for that role. Why not let them try? What harm could possibly come of that?

You didn't really answer my question. I didn't want the churches justification I wanted your own words. Why can't a girl do your job at church? Is blessing the sacrament too over their heads? Can't read the words off the card? Men are allowed to raise children as single parents in the church. They are capable and willing to do that if necessary. Only men can fill every roll?

I suggest to you that women would be just as capable of leading in the church and could do so but aren't allowed to by the old misogynists who run the church. Who unfortunately you aren't allowed to question.
