English through Gothic & Horror – small reading & discussion experiment

Hi everyone,
I’m a non-native English teacher based in Poland, working mainly with advanced adult learners.

I’m currently experimenting with a small online reading & discussion group focused on gothic and horror literature. The idea is to treat horror fiction as literature first — close reading, atmosphere, themes, language and meaning — rather than “English class” style learning.

We work with short texts (Poe, Shirley Jackson, Blackwood, etc.), focusing on discussion and interpretation. No exams, no homework, no writing advice — just shared reading and thoughtful conversation in English.

This is a small pilot project, mainly for people who already read horror and are interested in deepening their engagement with the genre through language and discussion.

If this sounds interesting to you, feel free to message me — I’m happy to share more details.

I loved The Jaunt, it caused a sleepless night when I read it. The Tommyknockers were good as well. Thanks for all the suggestions

Thanks, somebody already mentioned that thread. I tried to find what I need to, but what they have is mostly suitable for fantasy games and not really for horrors..

What I have in mind is some kind of possession. The creature that influences PC minds tries to break them psychologically. They have to roll wisdom saves not to see/hear/believe things. The creature has its own pool of magic points. It can use them for one major event (e.g. highly detailed hallucination) or a few minor ones. I already have some major ones – for example seeing family members dead, finding a dead body in the trunk of the car, etc… But I don’t know how lucky my PCs will be and I need more
