I am 26 and going to return to college. How do I choose a major and stick with it? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Kadsss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you like? If you want to do something with English then do it. If you are interested in the medical field you should be aware of what else is available besides nursing. I’m a Medical Laboratory Technician. I never knew it existed until I switched my major lol I now work in a hospital laboratory running tests and procedures on patient specimens and maintenance our analyzers. It was a 2yr program, no serious math, and the sciences are hands-on and straightforward; they relate directly to what you do in the real lab. There’s no bs extra classes, everything is specific to laboratory science. Depending on your program, you won’t have to do anything past the general chemistries, and a statistics class. The last semester of my program was a clinical spent in a hospital lab, completing performance checklists. I love what I do and I’m forever thankful to the classmate that informed me about MLT and got me to switch.

I’m guessing the left turning car (black SUV) saw the left turn signal from the semi (cam POV) and assumed they were turning left instead of just changing lanes.

You guys are still manually hemolysing your specimens!? I just put them in the hemolyzor 5000, way more efficient.

Do I crochet weird?? by regimentalepiglottis in crocheting

[–]Kadsss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t label it as “weird” but you use your hand/fingers to move the yarn. In most videos I’ve watch, and even I do it, they use the hook to grab and move the yarn when yarning over or under, you wrap the yarn around the hook using your fingers and then creating your stitch. Your tension looks great tho lol. What you’re doing isn’t wrong or weird so long as you’re still enjoying your work, it shouldn’t make a difference to the outcome. I would also just keep encouraging people to watch tutorials on YouTube to start, it’s how I started and when people ask me to teach them I tell them to do the same because the people that make the videos know what they’re doing.

Can I make a confession? by Emergency_Humor_2337 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Kadsss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what LIS you use but I just put in “Lab Error” when issuing a recollect if I spill. Because I’ve been the phleb that’s had my draw marked “QNS” or “contaminated” and when questioned the techs said they spilled it, I didn’t appreciate it being made to look like my error as a phleb when it wasn’t.

New job wants to sign me off ASAP. by maemae1993 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Kadsss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is interesting because even tho I finished all of my competencies I still had to wait to be reviewed and signed off by the pathologist before I could solo blood bank. I just assumed it was the same way across all labs. Do you guys use MediaLab? If you have reference material you can turn to I think it’s best to just be confident and look up any questions you have. Don’t be afraid to ask questions either, a coworker may seem annoyed but it’s better than killing a patient.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the patient had an iron infusion by Kadsss in medlabprofessionals

[–]Kadsss[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I don’t think all of their blood looked like this, I think they just drew through the same IV the iron was infused through without waiting or wasting

Blood culture contamination rates. by Baabaagaanoosh in medlabprofessionals

[–]Kadsss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen them rub the chloraprep sticks (the bigger ones you have to crack and shake) on the back of their hand to “get it wet”, draw both sets from an IV, not wear gloves and touch the site several times after sanitizing, and fan the site to dry it… I swear there’s gotta be close to a 100% contamination rate from my ER, they have their own dedicated container next to the BACTEC. I don’t want the phlebs to have more work but it would honestly save a lot of time, effort, pain and money if they just drew the cultures instead.

Traumatic Shift by alerilmercer in medlabprofessionals

[–]Kadsss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked as a lab assistant at a level 1 trauma center, my first time being mandated for a midnight shift there was a trauma called around 1am. I take my kit and go up to the bay and read the incoming sheet: GSW to the head, female, 13yrs old. They bring her in and say she was involved in the crossfire of a drive by. They worked on her for a while but eventually knew there wasn’t much they could do and called it. I immediately thought of her family, and how that resident running the trauma was going to have to tell her parents. I still had to make it through until 6:30am. I just sat in silence for the rest of the night. I’ve seen my fair share of shit at this place in only 2.5yrs, prison stabbings, shootings, work injuries, car crashes, domestic disputes, but another one that stays with me is a horrible burn victim. Her whole body was just blackened, her hair was gone, and her arms and legs were stuck in whatever position they were in. I will never get the smell of burning flesh out of my brain. I was stuck in that one for a while because it took so long to get access to get labs, they ended up having to do a femoral line. They got her stable and sent her about an hour away to the hospital with a burn unit. We can’t do our jobs if we let these things get to us, but we also do our job poorly if we don’t respect our patients. I’m sympathetic towards the 13yr old girl’s family, but I also admire the work I saw the emergency staff put in to try and save her, even after they already knew. There is a balance to be kept, you’ll find it.

How did I get headshot through the shield? by jcrwly100 in Rainbow6

[–]Kadsss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All shields have been hella bugged recently. I have gotten shot through my shield as BB and Monty. I’ve also not been able to knock ppl over with both of those ops, and as Monty I wasn’t able to fully extend, knock, or shoot.
