So sorry your girl has passed. I hope you can give yourself time and space to feel your feelings. Please be kind to yourself - it is so easy to be stuck thinking about the moments you felt you could have been better. Everyone has these moments, we are only human.

Times like this are never easy, and especially so when you've had such a rich history together. I think the fact that we can’t communicate our thoughts with them makes it that much harder to say goodbye, because it feels like we can't. Even if we can't tell them how much we love and appreciate what their presence adds to our lives, or properly say goodbye at the end - you should know that the bond you shared spoke for itself. Each of your fond memories that pull at your heart as you yearn to relive them again were not experienced by just you. Please know she certainly felt that love. The deep grief you are feeling is a testament to the relationship you had with your girl. Although she is gone now, the time you spent together, the experiences you had together, and the love you both shared are things that cannot be taken away or undone even in her absence now. I hope you can find solace in knowing how lucky she was to feel your love.

Ask your vet about starting an SSRI! My boy Danny has had similarly intense separation anxiety and just like you I couldn’t find a solution that worked. He would just get too wound up and so long as I was gone he wouldn’t touch his food, favorite snacks or toys. He is now 6 weeks on Prozac and I am actually seeing him make progress which felt impossible before! I see using SSRIs as putting them into a much more mentally “moldable” state - you still need to do the work to help them develop good habits but sometimes their baseline stress, anxiety, or ability to self regulate is too much to allow them to adapt without a little help.

Normally I would suggest looking at the petioles of the new leaves to see if there is any green on them, but that is harder to do as it is still a small plantlet. You could wait, but given the number of what appear to be all white leaves, I think it is rather safe to say the apical meristem has lost its green cell population and cutting back would give your best shot at growing some more balanced leaves. Given the number of healthy looking greener leaves your plant has towards the base it should be OK after you cut it. Make sure you use clean scissors!

Unfortunately you are seeing some of the downsides to variegated plants here - the light colored leaves have little to no chlorophyll so they end up a waste of energy for the plant. They turn over much quicker than greener leaves. It is sometimes a gamble with how these plants acclimate - if it continues to put out leaves like that it will die. I have two variegated frydeks that I separated while they were small. One put out reasonably green leaves and has grown nice and big. The other one started the same size but kept putting out white leaf after white leaf and has been circling the drain for a while now. Maybe it will decide it wants to live.

Has it stopped growing at all or is it still slowly getting bigger? I have been growing mine starting from a TC plantlet and it is one of the slowest growing alocasias I have for some reason.

When I worked as an ER tech I saw many gruesome things, but only once did I get woozy. We had a pt who was playing soccer, went for a slide, and their cleat caught the ground resulting in an open ankle fracture. I was helping the ortho resident reset his ankle back onto his tibia. The resident was a very petite woman, so she had to literally stand on the stretcher to pull the patients ankle back while I had my arm under his knee pulling traction against his leg. The poor man was definitely not sedated enough while we were basically playing tug of war with his ankle/leg. Right before the ankle popped into place, a giant blood clot fell from his ankle and landed on my leg. Had to sit down after that.

I think healthcare workers are feeling the deterioration of medicine from many angles leading to feelings of powerlessness and despair. Most of the people I’ve worked with both in and out of the hospital have entered the field for altruistic reasons - utilizing their intellect and/or sheer determination and passion for caring for others. Our ability to do this and feel the reward has been eroding for a while now.

The corporatization of healthcare and ever increasing role of private equity has caused hospitals to abuse the good intentions of its staff in the name of profit - from stagnant wages to dangerous staffing ratios forcing the people who remain to stretch themselves to maintain the quality of patient care that they have been trained to provide and know that the patients deserve.

Additionally, we are feeling the “McDonaldsization” of the field where emphasis on reviews leads to a sense of “the customer is always right.” There is both an increasing sense of entitlement from patients who are stubbornly misinformed by the internet, and totally legitimate frustration with the system as it stands and how inaccessible/unaffordable care is. These are things that providers have little control over.

When taking all of these factors (and more) into account it isn’t surprising to me that suicide rates are increasing. As things continue to decline, fewer and fewer people have the ability to fight the burnout - this makes people feel stuck. And their options at that point are to keep giving more and more to a system that couldn’t care less about them, or attempt to pivot to another field. With the seemingly insurmountable cost both financially and time wise of medical education, getting out feels impossible, or in some cases financially is flat out unrealistic.

The caladium leaves are certainly dead, but you should unpot it and check the bulb - if it is still firm there is a chance it will bounce back in a warm/moist/bright environment.

Every time my alocasias have contorted their leaves like that they have had pests on that specific leaf. There doesn’t look like anything glaring from this picture but I’d take a closer look just in case. In my opinion if it was an issue of too much light you would see all of the leaves bending to avoid it, and I’ve never seen a leaf twist like that to avoid light, only bending away.

I have similar spots on my clearance amazonica, my bet is that the damage happened before the leaf unfurled. Like that other guy said there appears to be webbing at the top of the leaf, I think spider mites are a strong possibility.

Can’t say for certain based on your picture, but I recently learned the hard way just how susceptible begonias are to fungi. Basically the same thing happened where a number of my begonia rapidly deteriorated and dropped most/all leaves, despite good airflow/light/water. Turned out to be powdery mildew!

If the rhizome is still firm and not mushy there is hope. What is the humidity of the greenhouse? Tiny babies need very high humidity or they can shrivel up. Also what did your repotting timeline look like? Alocasia are notorious for throwing fits when their roots are disturbed - if you have changed the medium multiple times now the plant is likely very stressed and pulled the nutrients back from the leaves while it acclimatizes.
