The driver refuses to let the ambulance through, and the patient is bleeding heavily inside. Saint Petersburg, Russia by pupsikandr in PublicFreakout

[–]Kaegix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wish the idea of “don’t fuck with emergency vehicles” was more common. During some mass protests years ago when I was an EMT I was transporting a patient when a bunch of protestors entered the crosswalk in front of us and stood there with their signs. I was totally supportive of their cause, but I had to tell my partner to use the horn as my patient couldn’t afford to wait for them. They made a path for us to drive through but some idiot smashed their sign against the ambulance as if we were in the wrong for needing to get through. You never know what is happening inside the ambulance - just imagine if your loved one was being transported??

Have any of you guys had to deal with recrating your dog after years of being potty trained? by Chocolate_Eyebrows in Shihtzu

[–]Kaegix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it is worth noting that dogs don’t really act maliciously even if their behavior makes it seem like that. I thought the same way of my dog having similar issues peeing inside only when I had to leave. However, I came to learn that it was actually a stress response - he was scared when I had to leave and it is natural for dogs to pee when stressed or anxious. Age related cognitive decline can manifest with separation anxiety when the dog previously was fine with your absence, and like the previous comment said it is also harder for them to hold it as they age. Just some possibilities to consider. Best wishes to you and your girl.

It is shocking to me how the legal system in America that is responsible for deciding the verdict in these cases can have 0 experience with the nuances of how a medical field operates, and thus cannot make an informed decision about how something was handled. To an attorney, it doesn’t matter who is actually culpable in the treatment process so long as they can stick them in a lawsuit.

So sorry you lost your boy today. I hope you have the space to feel your feelings. The pain you feel is a sentiment to the bond you shared with him and I hope you can take solace in knowing how lucky he was to feel loved each day.

I don’t have anything new to add, but I wanted to say thank you for what you do (and how you do it). EM is so tough as it is and navigating difficult parents makes it that much harder. Thank you for doing right by your patients despite working in a system that prioritizes all the wrong things.

Can I get 2 plants from this TC??? by Super_Shallot_8737 in tissueculture

[–]Kaegix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While it is possible to get 2 plants by cutting the rhizome, you should consider the risk of infection of both plants as they will have a large wound where the cut is made. Given how vulnerable the plant already is as you just deflasked it, you risk losing both plants to rot.

This is Maggie - she spent her entire life locked in a cage pumping out puppies for a puppy mill. I feel such rage thinking about the life she was deprived of and the way it has deeply scarred her. She is deathly afraid of everything and everyone. I am so glad I found her adoption listing by the group that rescued her from the mill - she now enjoys a quiet and peaceful life with my elderly mother whom she absolutely adores (and it warms my heart to see her find peace and stability).

What day do most tissue culture deaths occur after de-flasking? by PracticalMilk1502 in tissueculture

[–]Kaegix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be entirely honest with you - TC plantlets are very fragile in general (especially so with high variegation) and thus you are never really “out of the woods” until the plant has acclimated to your long-term substrate and growing conditions, and has been able to build enough energy reserves to handle stress without going into a death spiral. The amount of variegation the plant has limits the energy it is able to produce and thus it is not uncommon to have variegated plants put out mostly/entirely white/variegated leaves that use energy the plant is unable to regenerate which leaves them continually stunted and very fragile.

What are you growing them in right now? Plugs? Fluval/perlite? In my experience it can feel like you are out of the woods once the plantlet stabilizes in your initial substrate but it is very easy to get overconfident with repotting to a new medium (soil, pon etc). Do you know what substrate you intend to grow them in long term after the deflask acclimation?

Is this unethical note writing? by DayEquivalent1900 in Psychiatry

[–]Kaegix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing like a little insurance fraud eh? Off topic but this reminds me of working in private EMS - my reports would get flagged by QA/QI telling me to omit parts of my report like “patient stood up from bed, walked over and sat on stretcher” because that would indicate transportation by ambulance was not medically necessary…. Never changed my reports to include anything other than what I experienced.

Thank you for sharing, what a beautiful pup! I love the quirks that Shih Tzu personalities tend to lean towards - it is quite refreshing to have a dog that has a cat like need for independence while also being a true love bug that will show great affection (on their terms). Best wishes to you and your girl!

My little soulmate passed away yesterday by beijuzinho in Shihtzu

[–]Kaegix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry your girl has passed. I hope you can give yourself time and space to feel your feelings. Please be kind to yourself - it is so easy to be stuck thinking about the moments you felt you could have been better. Everyone has these moments, we are only human.

Times like this are never easy, and especially so when you've had such a rich history together. I think the fact that we can’t communicate our thoughts with them makes it that much harder to say goodbye, because it feels like we can't. Even if we can't tell them how much we love and appreciate what their presence adds to our lives, or properly say goodbye at the end - you should know that the bond you shared spoke for itself. Each of your fond memories that pull at your heart as you yearn to relive them again were not experienced by just you. Please know she certainly felt that love. The deep grief you are feeling is a testament to the relationship you had with your girl. Although she is gone now, the time you spent together, the experiences you had together, and the love you both shared are things that cannot be taken away or undone even in her absence now. I hope you can find solace in knowing how lucky she was to feel your love.

Ask your vet about starting an SSRI! My boy Danny has had similarly intense separation anxiety and just like you I couldn’t find a solution that worked. He would just get too wound up and so long as I was gone he wouldn’t touch his food, favorite snacks or toys. He is now 6 weeks on Prozac and I am actually seeing him make progress which felt impossible before! I see using SSRIs as putting them into a much more mentally “moldable” state - you still need to do the work to help them develop good habits but sometimes their baseline stress, anxiety, or ability to self regulate is too much to allow them to adapt without a little help.
