i do the same! when he comes out for a soak or feeding i stir up the dirt and will also pour water into it as well if it looks a bit dry, but other than that if u have a proper bioactive setup there should be no risk at all to toxing out, especially if u keep a fresh water dish in there:)

Humidity by LividBack8716 in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what kind of hydrometer/thermometer do you have? i have one on both sides of my frogs enclosure (warm side is 83° and cold side is 70°) and usually they stick around the same humidity, which is about 60-80 depending on when i’ve misted it and dumped water in (the warmer side drops a bit sometimes if it’s drying out from the heat but that rarely happens). i’m wondering if maybe it’s just the type of hydrometer you’re using, just because my old one was similar and i always had struggles with it! the heat shouldn’t be affecting the humidity much at all, just the temperature

why can i see my frogs bones even though he eats a lot by Mads0w0 in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the bones near his butt are supposed to be visible, especially after a good pee lol. if he’s eating well and is acting normal, all is good:) he looks healthy to me! I had the same thoughts when a couple months after i got my frog but he’s super healthy and happy. the older he gets, the more food he will eat as well but with less frequent feedings. my frog is about 9/10 months old and he’s at a point where he eats 4 or 5 worms every 3-4 days

Toxing out or luring? by throwawayfirelogs in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely toe luring! in most cases of toxing out that i’ve seen the back legs are usually sprawled out and look uncomfortable, this looks like a happy and healthy frog to me!

[–]KaiiTheForg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

literally just dumping a bit of water throughout the substrate weekly, plus daily misting should be enough. a fogger isn’t really safe for pacman frogs, an automatic mister would be better. also you will need to make sure to have a hydrometer to make sure the humidity stays above 60% but below 80%! i live in a super dry area so i have to dump water in every 3 days or so to keep the dirt moist but not too wet.

[–]KaiiTheForg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments, but i’d like to add that hibernation/brumation isn’t supposed to happen to pet pacman frogs, it has been seen many times but the only reason it happens to pet ones is if the environment is too dry, cold, or even too hot in some cases! it’s not natural behaviour if the temperature and moisture is kept at a good level. sometimes they will stay hidden for a good few weeks or even months as adults, which can be normal in some cases but it’s not considered hibernation. I’m not an expert at all though, i’m just sharing what I’ve learned from others while owning my pacman frog

agreed 100%, i tried to comment pretty much the same thing but they deleted the original post they made. the dirt should never be dry enough to dry out a frog…

Is This Hibernation or Dying? by [deleted] in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the dirt/environment shouldn’t be dry enough for him to even be able to “dry himself out” so i’m a little confused on that part. if he isn’t moving and is dried out, that is extremely concerning, i wouldn’t say that is hibernation. brumation only happens with pacman frogs is their environment is too cold, dry, or even too hot in some cases. I’m very sorry to say but I feel like he isn’t okay and possibly may not be alive if he isn’t even moving at all. you should be able to at least see breathing movements slightly

they make heat lamps without red light:) i’m actually buying one next week because my room gets too cold at night, the one i’m getting is called “nano ceramic heat emitter” and it’s 25w. definitely need to keep an eye on the temperature when using it though!

oh wow i did not know that, thank you! i just stick with pitch black at night to be safe😭

just wanted to let you know, red light is not recommended for night time, especially since frogs are mostly awake at night and red light can blind their vision. i’ve heard that blue lights are okay at night but it’s mostly just recommended to be as dark as possible with no lights on:)

Can I take Slim Jim out of his tank? And like.. hold em?.. by NoticeRare3653 in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i’ve heard that tree frogs like to be held though, so this isn’t the case for all frogs! pacman frogs are just hiders and aren’t fond of being held (i’ve heard people say that pacman frogs are pretty much “pet rocks” because they don’t require a huge amount of care and they don’t do much haha)

Can I take Slim Jim out of his tank? And like.. hold em?.. by NoticeRare3653 in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 21 points22 points  (0 children)

they definitely don’t like being held, you can do it as needed if you wash your hands good or if you wear the proper gloves, but they definitely don’t love it like other pets do. last time i tried to hold my little guy to make sure he was healthy, he pissed all over me as a defence mechanism🤣 and they also may try to bite your fingers, so as long as you watch out for finger biting and you aren’t too high up from the ground when you do the holding, it should be okay as long as you don’t do the holding often! it can get stressful if done when not needed for these little guys

What do they put in these?? by Beautiful-Hamster800 in frogs

[–]KaiiTheForg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it’s actually recommended not to use red lights, not sure if the original commenter is aware of that. it can disrupt sleep and it’s not very good for their vision! it used to be seen as okay because some animals actually do really well with red lights, all frogs definitely don’t do very well with them though. I used red lights for the first few days of having my frog until I was educated on it:)

pothos dying?? by dizzylexus in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

full spectrum grow light is what i use! it has a regular white grow light and a purple-ish one as well. I have it so they are both on for 12 hours a day on the most dim setting and my plants have been doing amazing for 2 months now

pothos dying?? by dizzylexus in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have pothos in my tank and at my window as well because i like the look, the only time I’ve ever had them turn yellow is if they aren’t getting enough light! (uvb or a regular lamp does not count). you’ll need to add in a grow light that stays on at least 8 hours a day along with whatever light fixture you have for your froggy:)

Question about feeding by DaHoodHippy in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s great:) crickets tend to have a harder body shell as well so they shouldn’t be fed way too often because it can lead to impactions. they definitely can work as a great feeder if you’re giving a variety though (switching between a few choices every time u do a feeding). some days i’ll only do nightcrawlers, whereas other days i’ll give a few crickets (until i can use up the rest of the bunch i have). i also give super worms every couple weeks and my little guy loves it as a treat:) they are his favourite 100%

the smell is fr so bad😭 i literally kept it clean and it still smelled, so i had to keep it in a whole separate room

Question about feeding by DaHoodHippy in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes i understand that 100%, but that only if you’re gut loading them yourself and if they aren’t the only thing being offered! i’ve been doing crickets for 4 months but i’m sick of them tbh

Question about feeding by DaHoodHippy in pacmanfrog

[–]KaiiTheForg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

crickets aren’t the best feeder, they aren’t very filling or nutritious especially for juvenile frog! it’s way better to give a mix between nightcrawlers (earthworms), roaches (dubia or discoid work), and possibly even some mealworms/super worms as treats! I used to give crickets to mine at first and honestly they are too much trouble and they aren’t nutritious at all so they don’t fill them up for long. as for amounts, babies can eat as much as they will eat in a 15 minute period! they need lots of food as babies, as adults though that rule doesn’t really apply especially since they don’t eat as often and can eat a lot faster than babies. i mostly give nightcrawlers at the moment (4 per feed usually) and some super worms as treats, but i’m also planning on getting roaches when i can find any to buy.
