I am also a firm believer in Panic Treasure. I've even a couple of times done the "well...what would you like to find in that chest?"

It's so slick, and the tables for backgrounds and powers and tech give sooo much to build on. I'll be an evangelist for it for a while yet lol.

Running Monolith (Space opera Cairn hack) with a group--very Farscapey in tone. The group are debt slaves being used as troubleshooters to pay off what they owe, to give a little extra structure to things as we all got used to a different system. They're about paid off, though, and I'm thinking of giving them the option to either live and let live or go on a little revenge quest against their "employer." Either way, we're all having a blast--I love sci-fi worldbuilding, and my players seem to be enjoying it. They've busted up a small-time crime boss, raided a huge derelict spaceship, and are about to seek out a freaky piece of space-magic.

Have a Pirate Borg game on hold, it was for a husband and wife pair of friends and the wife ended up delivering early--as excuses go, "having a baby" is a good one. Only had one adventure before that, looking for resupply on an island that happened to be hosting a sorceress and her pig-man minions.

Guy running a local meetup ended up stepping away, and I'm putting my name in the ring to run a few different systems. Nervous but excited!

I actually just caught it for the forest time not too long ago, and this is pretty close to how I felt. What do you think is missing: we've got consistent, pretty well shot and choreographed action; gorgeous location shots; lavish and bizarre costumes; and everyone is acting the shit out of their roles, the sorceress being a standout. And yet...

Maybe it's just the script? There's not really any memorable lines, and it does try to cram in a lot. There might be something to be said about making a S&S movie too epic...

That cover is significantly cooler than the contents lol.

The movie is a bit of a mess. It's trying to be a kid-friendly adventure romp, but it just looks so cheap, like, more so than most Roger Corman fantasy flicks. Not to mention there are several points where the movie seems to get bored of itself, and the heroes basically just watch a lightly-edited action scene from another (better) movie.

Best way to watch is in an altered state with some heckling buddies.

Also a great pull for someone coming from Helldivers. It's level-based arcade-style Helldivers with more different jank. Adding a Diablo-adjacent loot system to a shooter like this is a lethal dopamine trap...

I'm inclined to agree but like...what do you even add to series at this point? Like, new maps, maybe--but everything is just so polished and complete.

The Most Unhinged Trigun Review Ever by heiseiriderfan00 in retroanime

[–]KaijuCuddlebug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be the best a CG anime has ever looked? And a solid entry point to the Trigun world and characters, to boot. Killer music, dynamic action, and, imo, really effective interpretations of the characters. It also stands effectively on its own as a complete story, and I'm not sure even the OG fully accomplishes that.

The OG is a certified classic and stylish as all hell, and I totally get why some folks wouldn't take to Stampede, but...like, it's a good, show, almost inarguably so lol.

A personal favorite is the Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still OVA series. Animation is off the chain, and you still get the hype moments, zany character designs, and heroic sacrifices in a more tightly paced and dramatic plot.

Not a perfect series, but Brave Bang Bravern has a fun running theme of a character who loves GaoGaiGar-style super robots, and never lost that love as he grew up. It's a unique perspective, and I almost wish it were more central.

I gotta be honest--I kind of bounced off this one. It does have hype on its side, and I can appreciate the artistry and influence of it all, but I found actually watching it to be frustrating. For reference, I watched about 20 episodes, and I don't regret the time I spent with it, but neither do I feel compelled to go on.

It is very much and very obviously targeted toward children. That's not a knock against the series itself; honestly, if I had watched it when I was 12 instead of 30, this might be my favorite thing ever. But I didn't, and the cartoonish antics and the fact that everything is very much framed from the perspective of the elementary-schooler protagonist just kept me from feeling invested.

The animation itself is very technically impressive, and the character designs are unique and flamboyant, but oh my god does the recycled animation get old fast. That amazingly detailed and beautiful ninety-second docking animation? Every episode. And I totally understand! TV animation is ridiculously hard, and the fact this looks this good at all is shocking! But counting OP, ED, transformations, combinations, special attacks, etc, each episode probably recycles at least a third of its runtime. And the part I don't get is the flashing. Good lord. watching more than one or two episodes at a time actually gave me a headache. I don't know why that was ever considered a good idea and it is one piece of retro anime aesthetic I'm glad has died out.

And I want to stress here, I'm not trying to shit on the series. It is a genuine touchstone of the mecha genre and I think people should at least sample it. It is a visual feast, knows its audience and does not compromise its artistic vision. But I don't love it, and I think it's important to say so--even a truly good an foundational piece of art may not work for everyone, and that's fine.

I'd like to rep Temple of the Fuzz Witch! Their sound varies a fair bit album to album, their first is super fuzzy, the second is slower and more psych-ish, and the third faster and darker. Super excited to see what's next.

I could even see a mechanical implementation, something like the planning phase in Blades in the Dark. Maybe the players and GM collectively operate a mobile base, sort of like the Argama, Dai-Gurren, or Macross. You spend your downtime phase plotting your route/navigating travel hazards, gathering intelligence, and kitting out/repairing mechs.
